Installing .mif files on 8900

I was wondering exactly how you upload mif files onto the 8900. Whenever I replace my .mif file with the correct new file - when I try to get into GIN it does not display the app. There is also a config.txt file within the brew directory... this changes from 88 to 76 and then to 72 depending if I leave the files that it is ignoring in there or if I do not. Does anyone have any experience with this? I'd be happy to give anyone the mif unlocking program I have in exchange for knowledge.

I am using...
BitPim v.7 r4.
Curitel usb drivers.
LG vx6000 straight usb cable.

Thanks.

*.mif file? isnt it GIF?

Hehe... no. I'm talking about GIN apps. ".mif" files are files that store the name and attributes to a application (they could have a lot more to do with the app, but I don't know). Most importantly, they tell whether it's a demo app, or a full-version app. Basically what I'm trying to do is take my demo applications that I have recieved off of GIN and unlock them. This means any demo they put up can be turned into a full application. It's my solution to Verizon blocking all the wap mime-types and not offering free games.

You adding your own brew apps I take it

No... I am downloading the demo versions of the apps from Verizon's Get It Now service on my phone. Then I am transfering the .mif file for that application to my computer via the usb cable and bitpim. Then I modify the .mif file to read as unlimited or, in the case of ringtone apps, a certain number of downloads. I then try to upload the .mif file back to the phone and it craps out on me (events exaplained above). I wish I was uploading actual new games from my comp to my phone. I do not have any full version apps on my computer. There's a thought! Does anyone have an 8900 with ANY application that they bought full and are willing to transfer the files onto their computer and email them to me for... ahem... testing? That'd seriously be awesome. In the meantime if anyone has tried to do this... please help. Thanks for the replies though.

It all comes down to the same situation that Verizon 8900 owners are facing regarding uploading pictures and the such. We can overwrite... but if we want to add a new file we have to change a txt file that holds all the names and locations of the (in that case picture) files on the phone. I believe that this "config.txt" is like that. I think that it stores information about the GIN apps and must be altered as well when new files are added. If that's the case, then it must store more than just the name, location and size of the app, but attributes as well. I am technically replacing only one file, so it should accept it fine - going by the picutre or ringtone replacement method. Since it is not fine and the config.txt gets modified without my control, I suspect that it contains more data on the app. I hope I'm not the only one doing this... I don't want to have to figure out how to do this all by myself.

Don't worry, others have their cables coming.. great start though.

My attempt is to use a j2me app on the 8900

Seen that. The only really useful thing on that thread was the link to brewbackups.com They have just publicly announced recognition of the mif unlocking program I use. Still searching though. Thanks.

Well... just had a long chat over at bb.com and learned that Brew 2.0 is too encrypted to accept unlocked mif files. No one, so far, has been able to get around it. Hopefully soon. Please god please.

Good luck trying to get a Verizon 8900 to run J2ME apps, since it only supports BREW... But if you figured out how, please let everyone know. I don't think there is any GIN apps that installs the J2ME bridge yet...

2.0 has j2me extensions You can install a VM to run j2me

The problem is the space available...

We'll see, its the fun of trying

That'd be an awesome way to get around BREW. Load up an emulator and run j2me apps. How big do you think the emu would be? Isn't the (icredibly low) limit for BREW 328k? That wouldn't leave much more room for games if it were 200 or more which I'm guessing it would be. Awesome awesome idea if you can get it to work though.

Don't you still have to register the VM in BREW? Plus, how would one get to the java apps they installed? If you have links/details, then please let us know.

All you would need to register is the first-layer of the program I think, so you could cover the vm if you wanted. But I think it's a moot idea since you cannot add any brew apps yet, signed or unsigned to any Brew 2.0 phone.
