does anyone have one? does the housing affect signal strength any? do the talk/end icons on the buttons light up, or are they painted on? thanks!

I have one. I installed it myself. It worked great for a few months, then it started doing weird things. My SIM was constantly rejected, and many of the buttons stopped working. Now, even though the signal strength indicator is full, I get choppy conversations reminiscent of the old days (big phones, big hair, the 80's).

As for your questions, reception actually increased for the short time my phone worked, but it was not very noticable (it might have been my imagination). Also, the buttons are painted on, so you can't see the keypad numbers in the dark.

I'll attach a pic.

dang, that's pretty lame. i think i'm going to go with the vertu faceplate then. there's nothing like trying to fake your phone as something else.

is there a website with instructions to do the conversion?

and i guess one of those 'antenna boosters' would help with the reception....

huh? aluminum housing does not affect signal strength at all? What are you people talking about? I had one back in the day before it got stolen, and it had the same signal strength as OEM housing

What they say is correct, the 8890 original housing will not fit the 8290.

You have to buy the 8890 conversion housing which is specificly made for fitting the 8290.
