New P800/P900 app: OrangeScribble

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: blount

I'm a developer with an Orange R&D lab in Boston. We've just released OrangeScribble, our first Symbian UIQ application. It's an Instant Messaging client that transmits freeform handwriting from handset to handset.

More info and the download (a 100k sis file) is at:

http://proto.orange.net/scribble

You'll need a P800 or P900 with GPRS enabled to try it (we've not yet tested it on any other UIQ platforms). You'll also need at least one buddy with a P800 or P900 to talk to.

The app client is free. There's no cost to use the service beyond your usual GPRS cost with whatever network you're on. It uses Jabber to send compressed ink from client to server to client. We've seen heavy users use somewhere in the neighborhood of 2-5 mB/month, but your mileage depends entirely on how much you use it.

I'd love to hear what you think. Comments, questions, complaints, etc. in this forum or to scribble@orange.us

Best regards,
Alan Blount

looks interesting... i'll check it out tonight when i get home.... now, if i actually knew more people with p800/p900

Posted by: AntonisCy

hey rex-star i will add you 2morrow when i get the phone see how this works

Hey blount,

I'd see a use for this if you could ever integrate it with MSN... Other than that, the usage level wont reach satisfactory levels, IMHO...

MSN Messenger already has ink ability, so I'm just not sure what format they use, and if it would be possible to convert the px00 ink to msn ink and vice versa...

Cheers!

well maybe all of us here on hofo could create an account and maybe start a thread of accounts info for others to write to each other. the product sounds cool but i dont know anyone with a p800/900 besides u hofo guys.

i got a question. when u say sign up. wat do u have to sign with. wat kind of account do u have to get? how do u recognize other people running this app? do u like use ur existing aim account or something like this program is more of a add on plugin for aim?

Posted by: Roy

I'm pretty sure it is on their own network, so you create an account on their service, and use that to sign in...

About creating a thread, that is OK for testing purposes, like we did for fastchat last year in the S60 forum, but beyond that, it really isnt that useful...

OK, some of us make friends online, but the "usefulness" of the program would be to help our life by making communication easier on the go... hence, my suggestion for MSN integration...

To sign up you just click "create" when you start the app. That will create an account for you on the scribble server. It is not a plugin for AIM -- the account is created on a Jabber server we are running in our labs.

Like with AIM or MSN, you have to know someone else name to add them as a buddy. As this is more of an IM service than a chat service, we don't run a directory of users: if you want anyone to know your buddy name you have to tell them somehow.

If you'd like to try it but don't know anyone to talk to, my buddy name is "blount" -- feel free to add me! I try to stay logged in through the day (eastern standard time US).

well i tried to create an account but i could never get connected to the server and it just says connection timeout and check name and pw.

Posted by: blount

sdsviet: is your GPRS configured properly? The server's been up nonstop since Wednesday. Usually if the handset web browser works, scribble works. Hmmm.

Be sure the server name is set to scribble.orange.us . If it was inadvertently changed, that could explain it.

We've made a new release: OrangeScribble 2.1.2. Find it at

http://proto.orange.net/scribble

Just click the download link as usual. Be sure to exit OrangeScribble before installing. If you download directly to the handset, you might have to clear the cache in your P800/P900 browser to ensure you are downloading the latest release--we have set a nocache flag on the server to prevent your browser from cacheing the old .sis file, but don't know if it works on all browsers. Let us know if it doesn't.

To see what version you are currently running, just check the "Scribble->About" box.

Here's the changelog:

Memory use improvement for P900

The application running on the P900 was using almost twice as much memory as on the P800. This is fixed.

Photos on text buddy list

The text buddy list (accessed from the buddy icon in the lower right) now shows for each user:Hard crash fixes under memory and disk stress

We noticed occasional crashes under heavy memory stress. We believe that they are fixed.

Open Issues

We still see infrequent kern-exec3s and debug panics. If you see them, or better yet, have some idea under what conditions they arise, please let us know in this forum or email scribble@orange.us

Thanks!
Alan

@sdsviet: Which tmobile GPRS plan are you on? We've heard from users that those whose APNs are set to wap.voicestream.com can't connect, but those on internet3.voicestream.com can. I don't know much about tmobile GPRS plans--you would have to talk to them to find out more. There's some talk about this in the OrangeScribble thread on esato.

The client makes a TCP connection to port 5222 on the server. If this port is blocked by your operator, you won't have any luck.

It shouldn't matter whether you download directly or sync it to the handset,

Alan

yea i am using the wap.voicestream.com settings. i tried changing the part to internet3.voicestream.com settings but now i can get anything to work. can u guys tell wat are the full settings for the internet3.voicestream.com settings.
