Converting .WAV to VX4400B ringtone?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just picked up the LG 4400B from Verizon yesterday and am still getting used to it, having upgraded from a StarTac.

Now that I have used it for a whole day, I want to convert a .WAV file to use as a ringtone. Can this be done easily and reliably? The file is relatively small, and is the activation tones for Station 51 (from "Emergency")....... it's a long story .

The VX4400[B] can play mp3 files as ringtones. The tricky part is getting the file into the phone. The simplest way is to use Bitpim and the Radio Shack data cable. See the 4400 FAQ and the ringtones forum for details.

I just converted the .WAV file to .MP3 and then shortened it a bit to meet the 64-kb limit (down to 63 kb ). I will try downloading it to the phone and see if it works . If it works, I will post back here when I get a chance.

UPDATE:

I converted the file as above, but BitPim requires the file to be a MIDI file, not an MP3 : . Now I have to find a cheap and simple way to convert to MIDI .

Otherwise the BitPim program programs phone book entries well. When I click on the Ringers tab, it does not display any of the ringers that are already in the phone; must be they are in ROM and (safely) not user accessible.

Open up windows explorer and drag the mp3 file manually into bitpim. It will work this way.

Bitpim wants the file to look like a midi or qcelp file so you cangood thing since wav to midi is a losing proposition and wav to qcelp is reported to produce poor sounding clips.

I expect that the Bitpim folks will relax the .mid/.qcp requirement since the 4400, 4500 and 6000 phones support mp3 files.

I sent some small MP3 files (that I use on my VX6000) to a guy with a 4400 and they wouldn't work! Played fine in Wiindow Media player, but only 'hissed' on his phone. By the way, I rename the extender on my converted MP3 files to .mid so I can add them via bitpim's ADD tab. You can also drag mp3 files from an open explorer window to the ringer window on bitpim, but I prefer to keep things consistent and rename them to .mid.

You're right about bitpim not dislplaying the default ringers on the phone. The default pics though, will appear in bitpim (if you haven't deleted them) if you do a get data (replace) from the phone.

This is also an easy way to delete those default pics (if you power cycle the phone after you have deleted them they will re-appear). Just have the pics appearing in bitpim that you really want on the phone and do a send phone (replace) on wallpaper and bitpim will get rid of those default pics and rewrite the indexes. This is also an easy way to get the phone's indexes 'back in shape' for those times when you can't seem to get a picture(s) to delete on the phone.
