Does anybody manage to transfer files to/from a PC using the IRDA link of the nec515 instead of the USB cable ? The only thing I manage to do is getting a VCF file (single phonebook entry)from phone to the computer.

thank you,

Dorin

To be able to that your computer must have an IR device that is compatible with your phone....I am pretty sure that the IR on the 525 and 515 are only for use with each other IE: 525<->515, 515<->515, 525<->525.

Yes, the 515/525 will only send/recieve .vcf (v-card i.e. contacts) files to/from a computer or PDA. To transfer ringtones and picture files or to use the 515/525 as a modem, you must use a USB cable. Why NEC programed the phone this way? Probably a deal with AT&T to help boost gprs data usage/usb cable sales... the customer must spend money on either one to send/recieve pictures and ringtones. That's what I miss about my sony ericsson, you could easily send picture and ringtone files via an IRDA connection between the phone and the computer.

Thank you for the information, it is as I suspected. I was out today and bought an USB cable ( $19.95 + tax ).

I am preparing to test it.

Ddorin,

When you use the cable, you may run in to problems with the n525 memory editor software (specifically with .mmf files). Just download the PIE3 or N8 memory editor software. See the thread here..

Portablecow,

Thank you for the tip, but I didn't specify that I started my cable test prepared : I downloaded before all the software I found for Nec 515 (PIE3, N8, 525 Memory editor, USB drivers....). I tried even to "fool" some of them to work with the IRDA ( no success). Actually, after failing the IRDA tries I decided to spend $20 for the cable.

Regards,

Dorin
