Flashing Guide: Panasonic X70 - Upgrading the Firmware Step by Step

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: JohnnY BlinG

People have been looking around for guides, so here's one I just put together of the steps I took to upgrade my x70 from A19 to A30. It's loosely based on slunt's guide (just givin credit where it's due) which is what I followed when I flashed mine.

Before you start, read the notes at the bottom.

Get the following files:

WinMoDo v1.4
A30 Code for X70
Language Pack

Get a cable: MA-8320P

1. make sure your phone is fully charged.
2. turn the x70 off, remove the sim, replace the battery
3. plug cable into usb port in your PC
4. open winmodo, go to the settings menu and choose the correct com port and baud rate. (com port can be found using the usb-handset manager software included with the cable (or in the control panel), and the baud rate can be found by going through your system hardware properties.. the default is 19200)
5. for the language pack section, browse and find the language pack file you downloaded above.
6. do the same for the code file.
7. select the "options" menu and make sure "boot update" is selected. (When I flashed my phone, this was the ONLY option selected..I have not tried flashing with any other options checked in this menu)
8. click start download, plug cable into phone. WinMoDo will say "communicating".
9. press the power button on the phone.
10. winmodo will delete the old firmware and upload the new one when it's done. At a baud rate of 19200, it will take 85 minutes, but u can change the baud rate of your com port in your system properties to make it go faster (it's been completed in 20 minutes by others).
11. when it's done, remove the cable, replace your sim card and turn the phone on.

Notes:

Flashing, believe it or not, can screw up from time to time. Even if everything you do is "correct", things can still go wrong (ie. stopping in the middle of an upload). Weigh the risks with the rewards before starting.

I am only paraphrasing what Slunt wrote in his guide in a previous post. neither of us can be held responsible if you try this and your phone ceases to work. this is a GUIDE and a pretty rough one at that, but it's been proven to work a number of times by different people. Even though the exact steps may not be the same, it's all pretty much standard. Again, flash your phone at your own risk.

The files that worked for me are the ones noted above, if you chose other files (like other language packs) then do so at your own risk; I only mention this because I haven't tried any other files, but I should point out that slunt was able to upload different language packs to his phone with no appearant problems.

Lastly, don't be stupid.

I bought a com port cable and gave it a try using the details above, all worked 100%
Phone is now firmware a30, feeling very pleased with myself, all i need now is a way to unlock it, i know griffin can do it via logs but nobody ever gets back to me when i ask to buy log files?

Mod's Edit: Do not discuss unlocking cell phones... If you want to unlock your phone, go to the marketplace, please.

Just out of curiosity Emmerdale, did the look of your menus change when you upgraded to A30?

What have you gained by upgrading?

Did you lose any feature that you had in your older version?

Cheers

Hal

anybody mind if I copy this procedure to my website? If you have screen shots, we can bolster it.

One simple question:

Did all of your personal data still remains after the flash to A30?!
I'd like to know other than factory/oem ringtones/pics, are all other personal pictures/ringtones that you downloaded still there after the flash?

I spend near $10CDN 3cent/kb on FIDO downloading most of Jay's ringtone's off panasonicbox...to me it's worth it coz they are mmf files for much nicer and louder ringtones over the midi...

I've seen some ppl says all of their "stuff" or "data" still there...so I just want to confirm with you or lost_rebel?

thanks

Posted by: lost_rebel

My mobile was returned to me without any of the files remaining...but I also had a new custom pack loaded with more games than I had previously, different ringtones and wallpapers.
I have not flashed my x70 myself, I have no cable. sorry I am not a good person to ask on this subject....It is my understanding that if you do not load a custom pack, all of your files remain in the mobile.....maybe someone that has done it themselves will answer next.

Posted by: emmerdale

I flashed phone myself with a30 and yes my files still there, ringtones photo's phone book etc.
I did not flash the customisation file though, that was not available, think that would mess up you own setting.
Also i have run cb2000 software on the phone and played with settings, interesting to see what can be done, it will not unlock though, offers you chance to enter network unlocking codes into your x70 but does not read them

Flashing using the procedure above does not delete any of your personal files. WinMoDo only erases the firmware section of the phone, not the entire phone.

I can't get my X70 to work with CB2K, can you check if there is an option to edit/remove the operator logo?

Posted by: emmerdale

I cant work out if you can eit the operator logo but i have managed to change the start up and closing down screen on to the panasonic one and not the orange screen

Posted by: hhassan

It could be because I was charged half the price.....

Hi Mates,
I am trying to flash my Orange-UK X70, but it seems that there is some thing not happening!
I am doing exactly what has been mentioned in the thread, used the same software and hardware, but the minuite I press the power button, on the external LCD screen it says:

Flash Loader
X70 Secure v1.0
Rx Error.

and on the Software Panel it says:
Signalling...
Signalling Recieved
Parameter Exchange...

the keypad light flashed on and off... the only way to stop it is by taking of the battery... even stoping download does not stop anything on the handset

Although I changed the Baud Speed on both software and port setting to 125K nothing Happend after more than 20+ min

Is this what I should normally expect? do I need to wait more?

Please I am desprate for help

Cheers

Hi,
I managed to flash my phone, I took about 20min to complete.
I had to tick the two options in the file menu:
Gang
Boot update

It all went ok and language pack uploaded ok as well...

Now.. what new things should I expect to see?
I have noticed the improvment of the Cam Res.

And one more thing... I want to use T9 text input in Italian...does that ring any bells? can some one tell me how to change input language?

Many Thanks in Advance

Beess

Greetings! I was reading the procedure, which I think it very helpful. I tried find the newest firmware for my X70 online and was not able to find it. Could you please let me know how to obtain the firmware and langauge pack needed to flash my phone? Any kind of help would be great! Thanks!

Posted by: douflaginc

will the GU87/88 data cable work for this phone as well? Also, what's the latest firmware out right now? I'm seeing A36, but i'm unsure, and don't know where to get it. If someone has it, please PM me.

Posted by: Caligula

Yes all of the links are now broken.

Posted by: douflaginc

Okay, i found the firmware. Now, the question is, will a GU87/88 cable work for the X70?

Posted by: micha

Hello, I'm new aswell if you received any help with your X70 please could you forward the details to me as I struggle with numerous things on it especially the camera & volume.

Many thanks Micha.

No, the X70 and GU87 cables are very different. I got my X70 cable at cellcables.com, was a great deal.

Posted by: douflaginc

Yes, those two cables are very different. My friend has one and it's for a GU87, so I was able to see if it worked. However, the cable for the x70 has a smaller connecter (smaller width), than the GU87.

I just got the X70 and was wondering how to check the firmware version. What buttons do I need to press to get this information?

Try *#9999# anywhere inside 10 seconds after powerup.

thanks dude!

Posted by: RichArt

I used the same procedure to update my X11 (using the X70 updates), going from A28 to A36. I upped the data rate and completed the entire process in just under 16 minutes, including the language pack. I lost no contacts, ringtones wallpaper etc. Hopefully this will cure the odd problem I've been having with received voicemails.

Posted by: Kevbodian

anyone know the difference between a30 and a36?

a30 includes the 352x??? resolution pics (i dont use it because the camera's refresh rate is too slow with it on), I use the smaller pic mode

Posted by: Calibra V6

I can't download them either..I'm new to the site. have found an alternative for the winMoDo file but not the rest...I would appreciate an e-mail with the requirede attachments also!!

Posted by: Formula One

Thanks for the info.

I will upgrade my x70 to a36 firmware tomorrow.

I will let you know what happens.

Posted by: Scott145

Hi. Does anyone know if this is possible via a Bluetooth dongle oppossed to a cable? The bluetooth software can detect the phone on a com port.

Also, were do I get access to the files to upgrade X70 firmware

Cheers,
Scott.

Yeah i'm having a lot of trouble understanding this.

Can someone please explain - 1 how to tell what CURRENT firmware my phone is (I did the *#9999# thing and it says

I'm not sure if thats what i'm supposed to be looking for. I still dont know what software its been upgraded to, maybe its a A20?

Secondly i've looked on the net and I can't find ANY working links/downloads, so if anyone could give me a link to upgrade to something better (so that camera res quality is better etc), I would be so grateful.

Thanks

At least tell me what happens when its 'signalling' and the reg light lights up, then the bright white light and blue LED comes on. What do I do then?

I am leaving it to run, it still dosn't seem like its doing anything and its been 98 minutes!

C'mon - if your looking at my post now _ Please reply ASAP.

If it just says, "signalling" forever, but does nothing, then chances are that your cable will not work for flashing. i had this problem with 2 cables I tested. The Mobile Action cable is the ONLY one that worked for me.

Posted by: Tha-Flash

ah alright, thanks anyway. Fast reply

(i'm using x70 / x88 MAP datacable or something, its not a proper flash cable I dont think so it aint gonna work I dont thnk )

I am ××××ED!

Posted by: Tha-Flash

Wow I actually flashed it successfully and it all went well. I just changed some of the options.

I haven't noticed any difference though, not even the camera res.
