carphone warehouse upgrading X70'sfirmware ?

in the various discussions regarding firmware upgrades to panasonic X70's people have mentioned that carphone warehouse (in the UK) can update the firmware of your phone for you.
in fact, orange told me this last week when i called thier customer support line.
however, as suspicious as i am, i decided to check this with panasonic, as they are the ones who give me a manufacturer warranty. well, i've just spoke to thier support line who told me that the only people allowed to make changes to pansonic phones are panasonic, or thier authorised repair company (called CRC).
Panasonic were a bit supprised that orange are telling people to go to carphone warehouse as this really shouldn't be the case. In fact, you could easily lose your warranty if you let carphone warehouse upgrade your phone.
Has anyone used carphone warehouse to upgrade thier X70 ? if so, how successful was the procedure ?
