Most stolen cars of 2004!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

This was from yesturday but I'm VERY surprised the Accord isn't #1.

Why? These cars are easy as hell to steal and plus they discontinued making the parts. That makes the value skyrocket. What you guys think? Have you guys experience your car getting stolen? How come I never see 30k+ cars get stolen?? And most importantly, what do most of you use to protect your car. I was thinking about the "auto-lock."

Where is this????here in BC,i believe ACCORD ,PRELUDES and CIVICS are on top............i think........

Posted by: nx2k

why would the accord be number 1?
if i was a thief, i wouldn't steal an accord.
believe it or not, the tiburon is one of the most stolen cars, it was number i believe in canada for awhile.

The what?

Well these are the USA totals for 2003? And they steal accords because it EASY to steal. BTW, if you get your car stolen and you have mods, do the insurance pay you that stuff as well? Or just bluebook?

* 30k+ cars are less common, so in terms of absolute numbers stolen they're lower
* more expensive cars tend to be more difficult to steal (better security systems)
* there's less demand for the parts (stolen cars are usually stripped for parts), as the cars themselves are less common and owners of more expensive cars tend to purchase parts through reputable sources

yup that's true.. Hyundai Tiburon.. surprisingly...

either way, just but a rust bucket and no one will steal that

and yea, burn on accord.. i wouldn't want that POS

Maybe they're stealing the same Camry over and over again.

Being in the business of wrecked/theft recorery/damaged cars, i have been noticing a huge increase of newer (2001-present) chrysler products showing up on the lot. You know why, because chrysler doesnt offer coded keys as a standard option, and many people decide not to get it. So, now to the cars, Sebring/Stratus 4dr, all jeeps, and the theives new favorite car to strip: 2002 and up Dodge Ram 1500's with the 20" wheels. I have seen tons of these at the auction just sitting on the ground totally stripped out. Also I have noticed a lot of Ford Superduty trucks with their diesels missing.

lol...what if people like stealing rust buckets for parts to fix other rust buckets?

maybe that's why the tiburon is stolen so often?

noooo not my rusty hyundai pony! lol

Integra's before 2000 should be added to that list as well. I hear about those getting snatched almost every week.

All integras before 2000 did not have immobilizers, making them a cinch to steal.

i remember my neighbors had one of those in mint condition because they're seniors and the car was driven maybe only once a week. the car was also garage kept

Posted by: MikeBuzzsaw

How exactly do people get the car starting? Just hot wirring? Does jamming a flat head screwdriver work?

Simple, pull the ignition key cylinder out with a slide hammer or just bust it, then apply the proper size screwdriver.

Yes thats it, but if your car requires a coded key(most new cars except chrysler) than the car wont start.

Posted by: Sk8t3rB0i

I would understand people stealing civics. So many of them! But they are cheap to so why not go through all the trouble and just buy one?

Most Stolen cars arent stolen to be driven, they are stolen to be parted out.

do those REALLY work, or is it too much of a hassle to work around it?

They work, the car will not start without recieving the code from the key. There probably is someway to get around that but I have never seen it done before. Most newer cars that are stripped, are dismantled where they sit.

Posted by: MikeBuzzsaw

My sister's 1986 Civic was stolen for joy riding.

Posted by: edwinx

I might be too late to add my 2cents...

but another reason why those are cars are popular for stealing is because there are lots of them around. when you part out those cars, its easy to sell the parts to ppl. either prv or to shops.

omgosh that scary to know that chryslers don't make Coded Keys

They do make coded keys, but it's not a standard option, you have to pay extra for it.

Posted by: MikeBuzzsaw

How do you know if your car key is a coded key?

Posted by: nx2k

believe it or not, some companys made master keys that would open and start all cars of that company before the immobilizer system.

Posted by: MikeBuzzsaw

Si, the repo men got it, but they are EXTREMELY hard to get. Mostly american cars have those "master keys."

Posted by: gsmboi

how do u hot wire a car, i have a 94 taurus i can practice on.

I think this is true, when I got my CTS about 3 weeks later and went out of town and parked my car to walk and site see. Came back it was stripped and on bricks. sh*%ty manhattan

Posted by: turbo_slug

i was reading repair stuff on Mitchel1 and All Data and there was this thing i read that showed how the immobilizer work(i wont state what model/brand since i dont want to encourage people to learn how to steal cars :P)

some stock immobilizers control a relay that turns the fuel system on and off....

relays are very easy to tamper with and what's even worse is that they installed the relay in a spot that is very very accessible

anyways, immobilizers will deter thieves but just like any other theft deterent system, they aren't perfect. on this model i was looking at, one of the major stumbling blocks seem to be very easy to overcome if a thief does his research about a car's security system.

Posted by: b18c5

immobilizers will deter thieves however what good is that if the car jacker has a tow truck?

If they want your car, they will get it.

Yep, some locksmiths have master sets, the master sets only narrow down the cuts, not the code, after they get a master key that can turn the tumblers in the lock, then they can copy the pattern and then try and match the lock. Also, I'm not sure how many repo men can get master keys, however, with the new coded keys, repo men dont have to hotwire a car, because they have a lien on the title they can go to a dealer with a VIN number and get a coded key cut and programmed while they wait in the parts dept.

Yep they'll get it if they want it, but usually car thieves won't bother with something that takes to long to get, it's not worth their time and risk, they move on to the next car.

2000+ integras aren't much harder to steal either. Theifs know either way which is very sad.. I wish thieves that were caught were killed..

Posted by: MikeBuzzsaw

Wow a flat head screwdriver can steal a car. Whats the purpose of the key then?

Posted by: neuspeed

Actually also vin match for every 10,000 vins or so get the same digit you can put the key in by wiggling for the same manufacturer- at least hondas you can. Master keys are good and all but they need to be wiggled in.. And don't work on some cars.. That's why the best option is to have a kill switch, and a autolock with a good alarm. For a auto car check out powerlock alarms its saved several of my friends.

Tell me about it. I had a loaded 98 Acura EL, got stolen at Kennedy Commons, found 4 hrs later, fully stripped. Leather seats, air bags ect.

All are rare though white was the rarest which had a 1 year run style for each Integra front end...
Stolen type R's are good track cars . Sad as it may be a couple thousand fixing them run them gutted they do pretty well. And are the #1 all motor FWD cars, handeling wise. The SRT is good but not all motor so is the protoge MAZDA speed
