LG LX5450 Users with Alltel (Not LG5450)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Dakender

I would really like to start this thread for all of us using the LG LX5450 with Alltel Service. I know there are 1000's of posts and threads out there about the LG 5450, BUT, there is a BIG difference between the two.

Before I get to deep, I'll let ya know what I use & some settings:
LG LX5450 Phone (ALLTEL)
Cable from FreedomNet (eBay)
New drivers from futuredial.com (ones that came from FreedomNet didn't work)
Newest version of PitPim (V0.62 Special edition for LG VX6000)
Most the time it comes up on COM4.
Menu on phone 9-6-2 have it set to USB.
Menu on phone 9-6-3 have it set to 115200.

Have waded thru these forums for a week now since I got my phone and 99% of all the stuff is awesome and helps alot, but when most people talk about the LG 5450 I have also noticed that it's NOT the same as the LG LX5450 useing Alltel.

Anyone done any playing around with the LG LX5450 with Alltel? I know the file structure is totally different. All the walk thru's are fine and work great up to the point when they talk about the USER directory in the BitPim program. Only directory under the USER directory in out phones is SOUND and under that one is RINGER. DCAM directory which alot talk about is also different, it's CAM.

Only program I have got to work and talk to the phone is the BitPim program. The program that came with the cable (PC Sync) from FreedomNet doesn't seem to work at all for me.

Hate to start messing with stuff, but hey, trial and error might be the only way. Im Game, got any ideas? I'll give it a try, phone is still covered.

*** NOTE *** (This info is for the LG LX5450 with Alltel Service, NOT the LG5450 with some other service.)

OK, so I couldn't wait.......... Played around a bit and got some things to work yepeeeeee........

1st project and area of concern was to try and get pictures up to the phone in the "Graphics" area of "My Media" (Menu 7-1)
without haveing to use the pay per month deal with Axcess service offered thru Alltell or who ever else wanted my money.

Ringtones and stuff later................

(01) First thing I did was to find a pic I wanted.

(02) Loaded up my pic editor (I used Roxio PhotoSuite 5)

(03) Took the picture I wanted to upload (doesn't matter what size, format, size) and converted it to a .bmp file with 120wx131h pixels. Then saved it to the hard drive on my computer.

(04) Hooked cable up to the phone.

(05) Hooked cable up to computer.

(06) Started the BitPim program.

(07) Clicked on the WALLPAPER tab.

(08) Right Click mouse in center of screen and select ADD. New window pops up and you can search for your picture you want to
upload. Click "OPEN"

(09) In menu of BitPim program, select "Data", and then select "Send Phone Data...". Another new window pops up, this time put a check mark under the word "Get" and to the left of the word "Wallpaper. And also click on the little circle under the word "Add" and to the right of the word "Wallpaper". Click "OK" (should see progress bar and info at the bottom of the screen on it being uploaded to the phone to a directory called "brew/shared/mms/filename.bmp")

(10) Exit BitPim program.

(11) Unpluged cable from phone.

(12) Shut Phone off.

(13) Turned Phone back on.

(14) Went to Menu 7-1 and scrolled thru all of them and BINGO, there it was.

(15) Pushed the OK button to bring up the picture, then set it as Wallpaper.

(16) Backed all the way out and the picture is now there, NO WHITE BOARDERS either on top, bottom, left or right.

Not sure how many the phone can hold but did the next test with 7 more pictures, so have a total of 14 pictures now. 8 new ones along with the 6 that came with the phone. Also tested the feature of changing the picture for turning the phone ON and OFF and 3 or 4 contacts. All work fine.

sounds easier than with the LG5450..

Posted by: Dakender

So far it is, im in the process of downloading the new BitPim 0.7-test version right now, sounds like it has some upgrades. Will see if it get's any better

My LG LX 5450 failed to back-up the entire file system. What am I doing wrong?

Posted by: mcb56

I have the Alltel LG LX5450 and can not get BitPim to work on my Dell 2.8G desktop. I have the USB cable from RPIwireless, BitPim .7-test5, the drivers from Futuredial and whenever I ckick on get files or the + for the file system, it locks up my computer. I have to turn off my power strip to get it to reboot. It does this nomatter what version of BitPim I use.

I did get it to work on my 1.6G laptop, but I'm not sure if it is working correctly.

HELP, HELP, HELP... Is my 2.8G just too fast for BiutPim. Will BitPim ever make their software for the LG LX5450?

Posted by: Dakender

Well I'm not full of any answers for either one of these two problems. Backed up mine but havn't had to use it to see if it worked or not. So far all I have done is upload few pictures, and it seems stable at the moment. As for the 2.8gHz machine. Im useing a 2.1gHz here. Home built type. Newerversion of BitPim I couldn't get to work right at all, had to drop back down to the one they did special for the LG6000.

Posted by: mcb56

I've tried .62, .7-test4 and .7-test5. .7-test5 works on the lapper. Will play some more.

Well its time for another update wow.........

Spent the last few days testing ringtones now since the 30 day free period with ModTones.com is over, and their stuff is fine, but would rather have mp3's instead. OK, here we go. Got the MP3's to work and here is how "I DID IT". Not saying it will work with everyone, but this is what I did.

Basic settings and stuff I am using:
LG LX5450 Phone (ALLTEL)
Cable from FreedomNet (eBay)
New drivers from futuredial.com (ones that came from FreedomNet didn't work)
Newest version of PitPim (V0.62 Special edition for LG VX6000, this is the only version I can get to work on my computer. All the updated ones don't for some reason.)
Most the time it comes up on COM9.
Menu on phone 9-6-2 have it set to USB.
Menu on phone 9-6-3 have it set to 115200.
MP3 Maker Program: MAGIX MP3 maker 2004 Diamond
MP3 Editor: MAGIX music editor version 1.06

(01) First thing I did was to find a song I wanted. In my case I had already ripped it from the cd and was in mp3 format already.

(02) Loaded up my music editor.

(03) Won't go into details here of what I did on the song with the program I was using, there are so many out there most of my info would just confuse you (I can get detailed if you are using same program if you would like, drop me an email) but to make a long story short, found the part of the song I wanted and cut it out, first test I scaled it down to only about 15 sec long, sec time I did it for 30 sec and it still worked, and then saved that clip as a "MP3 High Quality (*.MP3)" with 128 kBit. Then saved it to the hard drive on my computer.

(04) Hooked cable up to the phone.

(05) Hooked cable up to computer.

(06) Started the BitPim program.

(07) Clicked on the RINGERS tab.

(08) Right Click mouse in center of screen and select ADD. New window pops up and you can search for your song you want to upload. Click "OPEN"

(09) In menu of BitPim program, select "Data", and then select "Send Phone Data...". Another new window pops up; this time put a check mark under the word "Get" and to the left of the word "Ringtone". And also click on the little circle under the word "Add" and to the right of the word "Ringtone". (10) Exit BitPim program.

(11) Unplugged cable from phone.

(12) Shut Phone off.

(13) Turned Phone back on.

(14) Went to Menu 7-2 and scrolled thru all of them and BINGO, there it was.

(15) As soon as I scrolled onto it, it began to play automatically. Loudness was a bit much, so had to turn the volume down. MP3’s seem to play louder than normal songs that came with it.

(16) Set it up to a lot of different things: Alarm, plays when my mom calls, etc. Works for all the ones I set it up for.

Posted by: mcb56

I got BitPim .7-5test to work and backed up the entire tree. Thanks for the post.

What about games? Have you tried that yet? I already have the ringtones and pics I want. Now I want games.

Posted by: Dakender

Havn't had time to mess with the games yet. that's next

Posted by: mcb56

I'd try, but have no idea where to put ganes so they show up on my menu. The LX5450 directory structure is different than for a Telus phone.

Posted by: Dakender

True, True, as far as I can tell at the moment, only games I would know how to use would involve Axcess or what ever that service is, and that means PAY.............. so for us Alltel users, if you know of a way let me know too There isn't even a game menu to choose usnless you add it to Axcess Apps menu.

Posted by: mcb56

I wonder if when you buy a game from Alltel, it creates a game directory. How much do they charge for a game? I've heard of paying for demos, but know nothing else.

Posted by: Dakender

Hey all,

Been getting alot of private mail with questons, all seem to be the same thing, here's some info that might help.

Had to get the old search engine back up and running and remember where, what and when I did what hehehehehe.... Ok, as for the drivers, I just did the Automatic install from Futuredial.... they seem to be fine, it's the BitPim program that was messing everything up it seemed.... with the LG LX5450 useing Alltell you ( or I did anyway) need the special BitPim program for the LG VX6000, I tried the normal version of that special one and even the newest one, didn't work. I will give ya a couple links to the places I was searching when I got it all to work. After viewing these two pages, I never had to go searching anymore, it all worked fine. Hope it helps, but if not, talk to me, see what we can work out

Very Helpfull place:

This is the thread where I got the special BitPim Program:

Posted by: pyrojoe

okay, im starting to get really frustrated with this. i got the mp3 i want, scaled it down and everything. when i try to add ringer in bitpim i get an error that says the file is too big at 120k. max size is 64k. grrrrr!
so i tried adding by just opening the ringer directory and doing new file. seemed to load just fine, but it doesnt show up on the phone. i turned it off, than back on and theres still nothing there.

Posted by: pyrojoe

okay, i finally figured it out. i downloaded the patch bitpim from that link and everything is good now.

Posted by: Dakender

Great So glad it all worked out ..........

Back to the games question............ I did some research on my phone here and only games I could find were thru that Axcess deal. As a test I checked out Tetris, well they want a $5.49 set up fee plus $2.25 a month just to play it....... No Me ! ! ! ! ! Will call Alltel here and talk to a couple friends and see if they know of anyone haveing games on theirs without using the Axcess Service.

Posted by: mcb56

I am using BitPim .7-test5 on my laptop and it seems to work fine for downloading. I haven't tried to upload anything yet. My laptop is an AMD 1.6G. When I try to do anything on my 2.8G Intel desktop, it locks up my computer and I have to power off to reboot. I'm pretty sure I'm using the same drivers on both. Is my desktop too fast?

Thanks for the Alltel charges info. Was just about to download from them.

What about those free games? Anybody tried them on an LX5450?

Posted by: mcb56

I need to know what drivers are working. All three of mine say LG Electronics Ver 2.1, with a date of 5/21/03 and 5/22/03.

I do see a problem with .7-test5. It doesn't show all my ringers. Nothing at all under "usr".

I now have another problem. I deleted the some of the un-wanted wallpapers, but when I select wallpaper on the phone, they are not there, even though the title is. How do I restore the original file structure. The restore function is confusing.

Got em back wheeeewwww.... Had to do a replace. Add didn't work.

Gonna leave it alone except for adding game if I can.

Posted by: Dakender

Again, Let me say I did not get any of the drivers from LG or from Freedomnet to work. All I did was do a AUTO INSTALL FROM FutureDial on them.

Ok, here is some info on the drivers. Unless I have the cable pluged into the phone, none of these show up at all in the Device Manager.

1. First one is under "Modems" it has "FutureDial USB Modem". Properties:
Driver Provider: FutureDial, Inc.
Driver Date: 6/11/2003
Driver Version: 3.50.0.2701

2. Second one is under "Ports (COM & LPT)" it has FutureDial USB Diagnostic Serial Port Drivers (WDM) (COM9)".
Properties:
Driver Provider: FutureDial, Inc.
Driver Date: 6/11/2003
Driver Version: 3.50.0.2700

3. Third one is under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" it has "FutureDial USB Composite Device".
Properties:
Driver Provider: FutureDial, Inc.
Driver Date: 6/11/2003
Driver Version: 3.50.0.2701

Also, another thing I found was to not mess with was the Filesystem TAB on BitPim .......... First time I messed with that I messed it up bad. Only 3 things I have SAFELY messed with is the Address Book, Ringers, and Wallpaper. and used their tabs to do it. Thinking about it, if you add a ringer or photo manualy by way of the FILESYSTEM TAB, Im not sure how it's supposed to tell the phone it's there. I know it has some kind of structure in the data files by reading posts from others with even other phones. So, I never messed with that tab after the first crash.

I also had problems in the begining with deleting the lame pics that came with the phone Bad Mistake. It likes them for some reason. And it might have been becasue I did it in the FileSystem Tab, who knows.

Posted by: mcb56

Did you atleast back up the entire tree? It saves it as root.zip.

I will get the drivers and install them to see if I can get mine to work on my desktop.

Did you do the full driver install or just the ones for the LG6000? The full one has all the phones I think. I wouldn't think that would be necessary.

Posted by: Dakender

Yup, did the back up.

And if I remember right, I picked just the LG6000.

Posted by: mcb56

Just re-installed the 6000 ones from Futurdial. The still show LG Electronics with an earlier date then the ones that work, but not reliabibly on my laptop. Will try the full install from FD, although I really don't want to clutter up my drive with stuff I don't need.

How about sending me a zip file with the drivers that work for you.

Posted by: mcb56

Did the install version of FutureDial and picked LG6000. When my desktop found new hardware, I directed it to where the new drivers were and it works fine. I'm using .7-test5 and on both machines now and it is working. Thanks for the help.

I still don't see all the ringers and wallpapers that are on the phone. What's with that? Depending on which driver I used to save the root file with, the wallpapers show up in the zip file as either .bmp or .jpg. It appears that BitPim saved it differently because I now have two "Desert" wallpapers. One .bpm and one .jpg. I'm so confused!!!!

I still want games. Anybody got the any games to work.

Posted by: havanahjoe

From what I've read (which is not too much) I kind of get the idea that Axcess is just like Get It Now, which means that both Verizon and Alltell use BREW for JAVA. And I'm also guessing that this phone has BREW 2.0 which will make it impossible (until now) to upload games to this phone, just like with the VX6000 from Verizon.

The Telus lg 5450 uses regular JAVA and that's why they can upload games without any problem.

Again, this is what I have come to understand, comments are more than welcome.

Posted by: john00

sounds right to me ^^

::goes and plays games for free::

Posted by: pyrojoe

somebody has got to find a way around this axxess BS. cuz where i live, i dont get a digital signal so i cant even access the catalogs to download games. my only hope is somebody figures out how to do it with bitpim.

Posted by: Dakender

I'm in the same boat here, 90% of the time when I am at home I am not in digital range. Working on it, but at the moment I don't have a clue as to where to even put a game if I had it to upload. Might be just as easy to carry my game boy advance around with me.

:: shuts off phone and turns on the game boy ::

I'm digital in Phx, and still have never been able to connect. That's a phone call.

Posted by: lg5450baller

If you would look under the filesystem tab and go to brew, thats where the apps and games are. I messed with it a little bit, but didn't want to mess my phone up. If anyone would like to take a chance to get games on the Lx5450, thanks!!!!!!!!

Posted by: billdo_83

Does anyone use the cable from www.cellphoneshop.com ?
I was going to purchase that cable for 12 dollars then download bitpim and thats all I need to connect my Cellphone to PC?

Posted by: spoonx0r

Hey everyone. After reading this post I was inspired to create a group for Alltel LG LX5450 users. Check out: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/alltellx5450/
There isnt a whole lot yet but I plan to add as much as I can and anything anyone else would like to add would be awesome. Info, questions, problems, anything. Thanks!

Posted by: mcb56

Dude, your site sucks. I registered and posted a reply and it won't show up. Is this a scam to get e-mail addreses or what?

Posted by: spoonx0r

lol what?! No it's not a scam, I think you just replied to the post which only sends your reply to the creator (I have now changed this to send to everyone) but to have it show up on the message board you must have to start a new thread. Anyway, I did get your message and for whatever reason, not all ringers will show up in BitPim. Many other people have expressed this same concern. At this time I dont know why they dont but I'm still just getting started into the phone. Of course any information I get will be posted to the group. Thanks for joining.

Posted by: mcb56

Ok, I am used to posting like on here and seeing my reply. Good work. We need an Alltel only message board.

Posted by: Jedis

Well, I could host a message board on my server, but would need to see there was enough interest in a forum just for Alltel phones; specifically the LG LX5450 by Alltel.

I transfered mp3's and bmp images to my phone. The file names show up on my phone. However, when I try to view the image I get a blank screen. When I try to listen to the mp3 there is no sound. I edited the mp3 to approx. 15 seconds. I edited the image to 120 x 131 pixels. Any suggestions?

Also, is there a way to transfer a picture that was taken with your phone onto your pc via the cable instead of doing it thru email?

Yup i do that with my phone.
Open up bitpim and get phone data for wallpaper
then click on the photo in bitpim and save it.

Posted by: cajunman

I am using Bitpim. I did save the bmp and the mp3 in the Bitpim software before transfereing it. The picture shows up fine in Bitpim, but my phone will not display the pic nor play the mp3

Posted by: d_wildemann

Has anyone been able to go from the phone to a PC with pictures taken by the phone?

Posted by: LG-LX5450

To get pics off phone just go to Data -> Get Phone Data -> Get Wallpaper (assuming you have bitpim working). You get all the stoopid bmps that come with fone, cant get rid of them permenately. The other Here is a photo of ferrets playing with a kitty from earlier today:

argh my brain is dead. So no j2me games with lx5450 anytime soon, sadly enough. After lots of research on the qualcomm website I have found a lot of vapor ware. At this link they talk about a j2me virtual machine for brew, after a google search it looks like esmertec.com might have had a prototype VM made but I don't see it on their site, maybe someone can engineer it out of them.

Qualcomm claims when you use a wap browser to dl a j2me app it would automagically install the vm if it was needed, of course I tried it and I got an 'invalid content' error. So what we need is a Brew J2ME VM, everyone get coding! Hahah, but no seriousaly you can get the Brew 2 SDK for free so get at it.

What I really want to do is find out why the LG5450 (Telus) is the secret J2ME product of LG and we are left with the popular piece of junk that doesnt work. Somehow there has to be a way to put the LG5450 firmware on the LX5450 and not screw up the phone. ARGH! At the very least we need something like MIFU for Brew 2.

Hey guys, I am useing the bitpim 7.17 when it first asks for the phone type, I said it was the v6000. Everything works very fast and E-Z.. Wallpaper. Pics, Ringtones.. I payed for a game from alltel and it put it in the Berw folder. It is a .mif file. It looks like it's just like my t720 phone. If I could remember where I put all my game .mif I would try it.. It was very E-Z to do. I had like 30 games for the t720. The .jar and the .jad files will not work with the alltel phone. The .mif files do not have there game names. Meaning the one I payed for from alltel is not called tetis.mif.. It is called 3015.mif. It will have numbers and not the game name so you never know what game it is tell you download it. Heres how it works.. You do not put the game on your phone cuz the file you put, The 3015.mif is just a file that says you allready payed for it and wanna restore back on your phone... Ok I'm done now.. If I can ever find my game files I will try it and post what happen..
Well got to jet.. Later guys...

ok...i have both and lg 5450 and 5550 through alltel and i tried using the ringtone tab in bitpim to sent them to the phone but it doens't work. i also have an audiovox 8910 which is very similar to the lg because they are made by the same company, and i had to use the "view filesystem" tab and go down to "user, sound, ringer" and right click and go to "add" in order to get bitpim to upload the mp3 to the phone. i also had to go to axcess apps and then back out right away and my phone would give me some type of error message, reboot itself, and then the ringers would be there. i've been searching all over these forums looking for a way to get the 5450 and 5550 to actually recognize the ringtones. so if anyone has any info that would be great. thanks.
