Thoughts on Slider...

I got my Slider about 2 weeks ago (06905), and think it's a great phone minus the VH1/MTV crap.

I just received my USB data cable in the mail yesterday, and have already transferred over a few MP3 ringtones, and some backgrounds.

Using BitPim, I notice that transferring small files works fine for the Kyocera, but I am unable to save any data...probably due to the fact that the program is running in LG VX-4400 mode. What I'm curious to know is whether or not the browser version would be available if the author of BitPim ever makes a patch to interface directly with the slider?

For instance, down the road, could somebody with an older free-WAP version of the slider save their browser via BitPim, send the browser to somebody with a newer version (like me), and just overwrite the 1.0.10 with the 1.0.00...or does anybody know for a fact that OpenWave is embedded in the firmware?

Some other things; has anybody figured out where the sounds for boot-up shut-down go? Or the startup screen? I see lots of directories in BitPim, I'm just cautious to actually screw around with them when I can't backup my data yet.

Finally, if anybody is interested, I read online about protecting PDA covers, and Wal-Mart sells clear vinyl sheeting in bulk for $.87/yard (here in FL). I bought probably 3 square-feet for 24 cents(!). I made a template and cut out a piece to fit on my Slider's screen...once the airbubbles are out, it looks/works great.

Cheers. Sorry for the long-winded post.

Yes, some good ideas here.

I have a serial cable for my 1.0.10 Slider and I have done some experimentation with bitpim. As far as I can tell, there is no way to download the firmware off the phone. bitpim just gives access to the nvram, which I believe is completely separate from firmware. I, too, thought downgrading to an older firmware might be worth a shot, but it seems to be a dead end.

On the other hand, bitpim does give access to the browser's cache file. However, after some experimentation, it seems the browser reloads its cache everytime the browser starts -- so it's not possible to change the cached data and possibly load some external links.

By the way, all files seem to transfer fine with my phone, but maybe that's because I'm using a serial cable. bitpim may be more unstable with the USB cable.

You might try using gagin instead (do a google search). Maybe it works better with your USB cable.
