treo 600 at CompUSA

I went to CompUSA to day and picked up a new Treo 600 for TMobile. OK, not so remarkable in itself but...

The salesman struck a deal with me that if he got me the "activation" discount of $175 off of the $674 retail price then I would get the $150 2-year replacement warranty. Ok, so I saved $25 and 20 months from now I can "drop" my 600 and get a replacement 610... (650? 700?).

He explained that CompUSA and TMobile don't work closely enough together to figure out that I never activated... BTW, the salesman made sure his manager wasn't around to notice his ploy... kinda made me homesick for Chicago.

So, does that mean that anyone can go to CompUSA, get the activation, cancel and save $150?? Nevermind the replacement warranty that was just an artifact of this particular salesman. I suppose I can go return just the warranty if I wanted to... or I could have just refused the warranty at the cashier... anyway I'm happy as I am. Hope this story helps someone.

What the salesperson did was semi-shady. Shady in that he gave you a discount on something when you didn't deserve it (the activation discount). Also shady because his "deal" involved him getting a "SPIF" (sales person incentive fund) of a few dollars that he otherwise would miss out on. Only "semi-shady" because the $150 replacement plan is, for many people (me included) a good deal.

Think of it this way: for an additional $150, any time in the next two years, if and when a new, hotter model is released (which is, as you know, a guarantee), you can apply your $500 towards the next device.

TAP is great.

Well, I'm happy with the 2 year svc plan anyway. One question though, about it. In order to take advantage of the upgrade feature, uh, er, replacement feature - how do you handle that? Does your phone accidently have a high voltage applied to it? Or fall out of the car window? Or get left in the microwave by mistake? ?? :-)

i did not get the treo 600 from CompUSA but I did buy a PocketPC from CompUSA.

What it will happen is in next 2 yrs and they have a new model of TREO comes out, you just need to bring your receipt and unit to the store and require to "upgrade" or "replace" with the new model as you wish. you might need to pay for the different if there is any.

i plan to upgrade my PocketPC 2215 to the latest version 4415 or 4425? (with the built-in keyboard), or else upgrade to Sony UX-50

If CompUSA offers me the deal which you got, I will buy it even thought the cost is higher, but I got the replacement plan on it thou.

Have fun with your Treo, i cannot wait my until to be shipped out (still Block log )
