i want to be able to shorten the songs so that they are under 20k.

Get Anvil Studio and play the Midi or use the slider so that it is at 30 sec. (about how long the ringer will play) and use truncate song. You can do a lot more, but I'm too lazy today to tell you
Besides, it's more fun to figure it out.
