RDS Radios

Has anyone ever messed around with RDS Radios? I think that they are very neat. I like the way they give you different messages. Right now, RDS Radios pretty much give you station information. In the future, they will broadcast advertisements, stock reports, news, and weather. For now, I think theres some stations that send out the name of the song thats being played-just like sattelite radio.
These things have been out overseas for a while now but they first were debuted in America sometime in 1998. The first RDS radio I saw was on the '98 Fords (Explorer & Expedition)/Lincolns (Town Car & Navigator)/Mercurys (Mountaineer). Then they started turning up in the 2000+ GMs (such as the Impala) and imports (such as Toyota in the Avalon).
One really cool thing is the different features, such as where it will interupt your tape or cd with important traffic information. I just wish that it was a feature on the am band.
As far as messages, Here in New York, I just saw one yesterday in a 2002 Venture that was for the radio station Hot 97 and the message was displayed in seperate pages. The message said "HOT 97 Blazin' Hip Hop and R&B".
Post the messages that you have seen on various RDS radios.

"101 WRIF, RIFF ROCKS!!!"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't these things been around in europe for over a decade?

Yeah, Joel930 mentioned that in his post.

hey Joel 930,

with RDS in NY

I know

it says Z100 and also the name of the singer and title of the song, and this is the same for 105.1FM and Hot 97. It's pretty interesting to see especially when you don't know who sings the song.

Oh, thats awesome! I didn't know that. I was being driven by the place where I rented a car to go get my car and on the way, the driver had the radio tuned to Hot 97 and all it said was "HOT 97 Blazin' Hip Hop and R&B". What kind of car did you see this in?

Posted by: Christopher15

I saw it in a 2003 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer and 1999 Lincoln Navigator. I'm sure any other car with RDS would do the same probably.

How advanced are the RDS radios overseas compared to the ones in the states? Are we pretty much caught up or do we still have some progress to make?

Also another question, will a Yachtboy or a Grundig portable shortwave radio work in America and be able to pick up the RDS text?

lol am i ever behind, i thought RDS was a proprietary thing by GM lol, but it seems that RDS radios started in GM cars when they started using the double DIN HU's, all the older ones don't seem to have it

Exactly. Those radios are more powerful than you think believe it or not. Through the RDS radios in GM vehicles and possibly (just possibly non-rds models but the newer style type -with the new font display-), you can use the radio to program the chime volume, to program an RKE (remote keyless entry) transmitter, and probably tons and tons of other crazy stuff - its really amazing how far they've come since those old 4 preset models in the 80s/90s GMs.
If anyone has access to a GM vehicle with an rds radio or a newer style radio with the new font, reply to this thread and i'll go and get the code to change the chime volume.
