Deleting MP3 ringer off phone. (once and for all)

ok i'm sick of posting on how to erase an mp3. can anyone just open their phone, and select an mp3 ringer and erase it? it never works. i always have to erase the .map files from the download\dloadindex . is that how everyone else does it? and then again...i think once you erase an mp3 all you gotta do it add a new one and the ringer that you deleted will be gone right? need some help here. THANKS....
