(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: BKKloppenborg

I am 17 almost 18 and my parents got a brand new 04 Honda Accord LX 2.4 Liter, vtec 160 hp. So i got their old 89 Honda Accord Lx 2.0 liter engine 120 hp. I want to make it a little faster maybye at least 160 hp so another 40 hp. Were can i get 40 more hp to put under the hood besides a new moter? In about another year it will die anyways 200,000 miles then i will get new one. So please any advise on how to get from 120 ---> to 160 or a little more.
Thanks,
Brian

not even worth modding your car for 40hp (40hp is a LOT) and only keeping it for a year... keep it stock and be patient.

Posted by: c^2

a beater like that isn't worth modding

for a minute , I thought the new accord was yours lol

Listen, everybody needs a daily driver.

Keep it the way it is.

My question is, WHY do you need the extra 40hp? WHY do you need to get it up to 160hp exactly?

Is it just a mental thing? Is it because you feel your car is "inadequete" compared to your parents, so you have have an engine with at least equal the output? (Or else, why did you even bother to mention that your parent's car had 160hp, the same as your target figure. You could have simply stated you wanted to get find 40 extra hp for your 120hp engine, and we would have given you the exact same suggestions.)

If that is the case, then that is just silly. Just get it through your head that you do not need those additional 40hp and you will be better off.

And another thing.

My ole 626 has 260K km on it with NO engine work done and the compression is still even in every cylinder...

That honda is gonna last a lit longer than 200k.

The only reason i want a little more horsepower is because my DAD and I both think its a littl underpowered, and thats not good if someone is coming at you its hard to get the hell out of the way with a underpowered car. My dad and i got hit by a bus because it was so underpowered and we couldn't get the hell out of the way when it ran the red light and it hit us. So i dont know why you always say

"Are you trying to tell us all something? with that gay word in there?

My friend has driven a 1996 Ford Aspire since he was 18. He's about to be 24. Automatic. 63 horses and 74 ft-lbs of torque out of a 1300c- er 1.3L 4-cyl. He's had to replace the tranny twice. It tops out at 92 mphs. Won't go any faster. Flooring up before going up a straight grade (pleasanton to Fremont in the bay area, 680) he goes from 75 down to about 50. It was rated 0-60 in 13.5 seconds. At one time, almost two years ago, he had $12,000 saved up. He quit his job instead and now he only has less than $1000 with over $1000 in credit card debts. He could have solved the problem if he worked and bought a car.... he is very depressed.

120-hp is nothing to whine about. Just remember there are Geo Metro 3-cyls and Ford Aspires out there.

Dan thats 200 miles not KM.

So that engine has been through a lot!

Seriously though, it seems like you don't know much about modding so you can fool yourself, get a K&N air filter and let your butt tell you your gains are 40hp exactly.

Yes it has been though a lot, but its about to retire on me... So far car has new Carboratar, radiator, trans, distributer, and like 3 clutches. ):

I admit i don't know much about cars in general that is why i am asking people for help, if i knew how to i wouldn't have writen this post. I am learining all i can about cars though about to make it my other hobby, along with computers.

If you're just getting into it... do waht I did and ditch the import scene.

Big power that's attainable by you and me isn't there. There's no such thing as affordable import performance.

Posted by: BKKloppenborg

LOL i found out the Honda has 98 hp rather then 120 hp, so its really kinda slow o well gonna get a new 1 soon.

Posted by: [Corporal Dan]

my mazda makes 83hp.

I take the bus.

you could, but it would be too expensive to boost it up 40hp. wait for a nice car to dump $$ into, you'll be happier in the long run

Posted by: techwiz

I think you should just keep it stock. I'd already be happy if my parents gave me a car....

Posted by: gsmboi

i've got a 1990 civic, trust me, i've looked into mods, and honda's just aren't worth modding. I'm not anti-import, but if your going to mod one, don't do a Honda. By something else, maybe a 300zx

Posted by: [Corporal Dan]

Yeah - and make sure you get a red top engine imported from japan!!!!111oneone

Posted by: Vampgirl

200,000 isnt too bad.
I have a friend who is too broke to buy another car right now and he has I think an 88 LXi (Accord) and it's original engine went about 500,000 and he dropped another engine in recently.

leave it alone.

Here are my questions:

1) Turbocharhers - Are they specific to each car model/year, or are they generic, where different units fit on different engine types/sizes?

2) So you pump more air into the cyl. Won't you need higher octane fuel to avoid knocking?

3) Boost guage: What's it's purpose, is it necessary?

4) Boost pressure: what's the boost pressure of the typical unit? Is it variable, or does a certain unit produce up to a certain pressure?

5) Can they be installed in OLDER cars? I have a 1987 mazda 626, good condition, ~200000km, REALLY SMOOTH RIDE. It's just that acceleration is bad. And it's only getting worse with the years. Will i be able to turbocharge the engine? (4cyl, 86x86, 2000cc)

6) Any good n00b websites?

So for your mustang, did you set the max boost, or was it the max output of the model you got?

ANy reason you only used 10psi rather than 30 like ur friend's vw?

wow...Dan went through this stage too!

amazing

Posted by: [Corporal Dan]

Yup.

Back when I was just getting into it. Believe it or nor, I actually HATED domestics. And my Dream Car was an Altima 3.5.

I also had no fricking clue what valve shrouding was lol, let alone mechanical advance!

Jesus, that's been a while. 2002. Ya learn a lot in two years.

Actually, I was waiting for when someone would dig up that thread

Buahah, sorry but I have to laugh... partially because my friend (who now owns a 240sx with an S14 dropped in by Motorex) was telling me the other day that in High School his dream car was a Hyundai Tiburon You can learn a lot in a short time. I grew up opposite of Dan, only liked domestics (love for the Viper, Muscle cars and others) and thought Hondas and basic Japanese cars were stupid. That changed once I learned more about them... now infatuated with Drifting (D1GP) and Rally (WRC, etc.) which primarily involves import vehicles. I still love American Muscle and if any car body styling floats my boat its going to be from the 60's.... 67' Camaro or Cobra Jet, Boss, Chevelle and the list goes on. Hell, I was close to getting an El Camino or Pontiac Firebird as a first car but changed my plans.

Your best bet is to sell it and get either one in the price range

#1 88-91 CRX nice little car
#2 88-93 Integra 94+ is good but more $$$
