What is out there to modify the phone such as get rid of the Verizon banners on both screens and WAP stuff and others?

Also if a new firmware comes out will we be able to take the phone to verizon and have it all updated, or get the data cable and do it ourselves? If so how will we find out that a new version is out? Thanks!
