Firmware flashing ....

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

What's up everyone! After having my new v5 Slider from the "good old folks at VM" for about 4 days I have come to the conclusion that the current firmware I have sucks . I've spent the past few days looking for ringtones and wallpapers for this phone and no way to get them (besides the tones at *MTV and etc which you have to pay 2.00). Finally I have reached the holy grail and lucked up on this forum which I have learned a lot from thus far... but my phone is one of those "new and improved" v5's so the wap trick isn't working (when I click the call button nothing happens). I'm hoping to take full advantage of all the exploits and cool tips you wonderfull people have found soon and I'm heavy comtimplating on getting the serial or USB cable soon. But my main ?uestion is this:

Is there a way to "roll-back" the firmware on the phones so I can take advantage of the WAP trick and other features?

I know this will definatly require a serial cable and a backup of my phone to the pc or some other means.

Anyhelp is apriceiated!!! THANKS!!

No, no way at all. I think some people are trying to get theirs flashed with the Verizon firmware (I know I am) but that's a whole different story.

So what if I do get my phone flashed with Verizons Firmeware? do I have to get a plan with them or will I still use VM?

The Verizon firmware would likely wipe out your VM menu items, which would make it difficult to re-up your minutes, etc unless VM lets you do that online.

you can do it online, you dont even need your vkey to do it online, just the # to top-up

What! I asked them at the store and they said no. Furthermore I asked Customer Service to change my ESN to my new slider and she wouldnt because it wasnt a verizon phone. What gives?! I want the Verizon software.

What r u talkn about?! Why would u change ure ESN? Wtf! Were talking about flashing! Verizon will flash and activate your phone using their service as long as the phone is CDMA compatibile. READ THE FORUM!

facts: So um ok, this is what i got so far on this topic, Verizon IS willing to flash your phone. you can use it with vm while using verizon firmware. It will give your phone a different feel(look). you can still top up.

Questions: will i keep all the ringtones and other downloaded junk? Free wap still available w/o signing up with verizon. Does this mean i will be able to use the BOOKMARK feature?

Dang, i know i had more questions!!1

Calm the hell down man! Take the stick out of your ×××.

I needed to change my ESN because I had a different verizon phone and I just bought the VM slider. I had to tell verizon the ESN of the new slider. I called customer service to have them do this for me (I didnt have the web thing set up) and they refused.

At the Verizon store they told me that a non-Verizon phone would not work with verizon, even though I told them it was a slider and CDMA compadible. I take this to mean that they will not flash it for me. I will ask them straigh out tomorrow if they will flash it for me. But they have been very uncooperative so far with this Virgin Mobile phone. If they even get the hint that you are trying to make a VM phone work with Verizon they give you a bunch of grief about it. That is my experience so far anyway, so I cant see them wanting to flash it for me.

I wouldn't say no way...if you have an older vm slider that can do wap....and you have pst s/w....and you have data cable and codes...it should work,iirc...but that is a lot of ifs.

Keep ringtones: no. Keep free wap: i dont know why we wouldnt, but not completly sure. Same for book mark.

Everyone keeps asking the same questions about flashing and using Verizon, it seems as tho no one wants to do any actual work and call verizon and ask. Thats really the only way you will get a straight answer is if YOU call them. I tried e-mailing them and they told me to call in. I would say the best bet would be to just pick up the phone, or get in your car and drive to a Verizon store (with your phone) and see what they can do for you.

I just called my verizon store in Texas and explained to them that I had a Virgin Mobile slider that I want flashed to Verizon software. The man said that although he realized the slider will work on their network..:WE Will NOT DO IT".. I expalined to him again that I had 3 Verizon phones and was a good Verizon customer, he repeated to me that I am sorry sir but WE WILL NOT DO IT.

I'm wondering if by flashing a phone Verizon could open themselves to a lawsuit from VM. The VM phones are clearly made available for the purpose of using the VM network and paying for minutes through it, and it sounds like Verizon isn't going to play the game

Posted by: cratos

Not only this but imagine if every customer bought a VM phone instead of paying Verizons "full retail" then brought it in for flashing. What a mess that would be for Verizon. I bet that is a big part of the reason they refuse to do it. Verizon is asking over $300 for a slider, full retail. Therfore you can get the phone 50% off by buying a VM version.

Posted by: yrless11

Even at $300, vzw is still offering the slider below their cost. They make up the money by holding you to a 1 or 2 yr contract. Possibly if they flash a VM phone then they don't force you into a contract. I think they are just not flashing them do to some corporate policy. It is the standard in the industry to not allow 'other' phones onto ones network. The companies that do flash phones are exceptions.

Are you saying Verizon pays more than $300 per slider? I find this difficult to believe. How does VM get away with selling them for $160? I saw in a different forum that the sliders MSRP was below $300, although I dont know how true this is.

I think that depends on there deal with kyocera

around over here verizon is selling the slider for $100 retail and u get a $50 mail in rebate so u end up payin 50bucks for a verizon slider

Posted by: yrless11

C-money is right that it depends on vzw's contract with kyocera. But it is a well-known fact that carriers subsidize the phone cost. That is typically why there is a huge termination fee. The msrp might be $300, but that doesn't mean that is what the carrier pays. As far as VM goes, they probably recoup their money in a shorter amount of time, ie vm's per minute rate is on the order of $.25 where as vzw is probably closer to $.10 roughly. Just so you know, it typically takes a carrier between 3-6 months to recoup the costs of adding a sub. A huge part of that is making up the cost of the phone hardware. It is a definate risk on the part of the carrier and sometimes they end up losing money, but mostly they make out in the end, hence the subsidy.
