Making MP3 Ringtones

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

First of all, thanks to everyone here for all the help.
I am so much happier with my phone since I have eliminated the idiotic VZW Banner.

Question: I have been able to mail myself wallpapers, and one mp3 ringer that I found in this forum (ride the lightning), but any of the ringers that I have tried to make have not worked.

I get the error " Unsupported content type audio/midi"

I cannot find any specific thread on this, I just spent the last 2 hours looking. (here and on the Telus boards)

All I can find is these 2 snipets

Personally I like to keep them below 50k each to conserve space on the phone. However, I have had a mp3 as large as 330k working on my phone. Just ensure that you keep the encoding at 96kbit or below. There's been talk of the chipset not being able to handle something encoded at a bitrate higher than that.

Personally I usually just take a 10-15 second clip of the tune I want. The chorus, or an identifying number of bars are usually good choices. If you'd like me to post a sample, let me know and I'll post a link.

Z...

yah. atleast a good 15secs. i run mine for 55secs (Chingy Right Thurr) at 48kps 22khz. cuz it sounds so cool haha.

its around 200KBS file size. not too bad.
if u need help u can pm me

I have tried 2 different files, both less than 200k, at 48kbps, mono.

Any help would be appreciated

Finally found some usefull info, thanks to funkmonk010 for making it a bit easier to understand.
Maybe the prog I was using wasnt right, I dont know, but I will give this a shot.

It seriously has been posted... but I can't find anything under "mp3" as well. So, whatever.

1) Get "SoundForge"... any version.
2) Load and crop an mp3 of your choice into the program. Make it about 20-30 seconds. The higher quality you want, the shorter you want the ringtone to be.
3) Blend both channels into mono.
4) Export as 32-42kbps mp3 (depending on your cropping). You want to end up with an mp3 that's under 110kb.
5) Get the program "Mp3 GAIN"
6) Use mp3gain and up the output to about 96-100 dB. I use 96.
7) Rename the file to "whatevernameyouwant.mid" The .mid part is important.
8) Email your cell phone (not through vzwpix.com - they have some weird compression) the .mid file as an attatchment.
9) Once you recieve the "pix message" save the media as whatever you want. It should show up as something like ar1.mid or ar5.mid (depending on how many saved tones you already have). You can, of course, rename the file whatever you want.
10) Enjoy. And search more.

Well, followed the instructions to a tee, and still no luck.
I keep getting the same error message.

Through trial and error I find that my MP3s have to be

1. under 70kb.
2. I just use my favorite mp3, pick the 20 - 25 second clip I want then crank that baby down to about 24kb 32hz mono.
3. Then rename it from Clip.mp3 to Clip.mid .
4. You can then test to see if it will fit by going to VZWPIX.Com and attaching it as an audio file.
5. If it says success then you are gold, if it says too large then keep on shrinking it down.
6. Once you know what you are doing you can skip the VZWPIX.com part and just e-mail it to yourself at PhoneNumber@vzwpix.com

Thanks DHL,

I guess I will keep shelling out quarters until I get it working. I will post back with results.

Funny though, some people say less than 300k, others say less that 110, and now less than 70.

300k is with the data cable, I am not sure where 110 came from, but 70 is what I am finding that works without it getting kicked back or without that stupid "midi" not recognized reply.

FINALLY!

You seem to have been right.

Once I dropped the size down below 70, it worked fine.
Thanks very much for the help

Anything about 100k and vzwpix won't send the file through. It has to be the actual file size too. if you look at hte properties of the file there is a part that says "size on disk" that number has to be below 100k or vzw won't let the file go through..

It costs $$$... try finding a freeware editor like:

MP3Trim
