the worst reception of any phone i have ever owned goes to the 68i. It's clear that they focused on the features.. if you are looking into get this one i would recommend something else try a nokia.. most models seem to have great RF.

i know the T68i has bad RF but i never noticed it,
always had it on me and always had reception...

when did you last check with your service provider that your zxone had "class A" reception?

Posted by: bluebirth

yea it does have pretty bad rf.
It doesn't hurt to have your arm wrapped in aluminum foil durring a call.
It sure did have GREAT features. It's my favorite phone.
I had to get an upgrade, better rf and color, nothing else!

My t616 has the absolute worst reception of any cell phone I've ever had. I'm serious-I'm going back 14 years with cell phones-none worse. Even with the R1b firmware it still stinks. Thank God it's a second phone or i'd be S.O.L. I can't even use it in my house- and I live in Philly!

^^^ I have to agree with him 100 %! (you're not stupid, but I'm with you on this one, LOL!)

*rant on*

I live in NYC, not in the boonies. I'm in the middle of the biggest Metropolis in the US and one of the largest in the world so you'd think that I would have great call quality or at least be able to make calls in the heart of say, Times Square, right? WRONG! I'd be better off with two cans tied together with string!

The feature set on the T616 is what sold me:
- Bluetooth
- IR
- Sync w/ Outlook
- Color Screen
- Camera Phone
- Picture Caller ID
- Voice/Call Recording
- Etc...

But unfortunately the phone sux a$$ through a bendy- straw when it comes to reception on AT&T's new 850 GSM network and there's no way to force the phone to go back on 1900.

I had decent service on AT&T's 1900 network, but once AT&T turned the 850 conrtol channels, instantly my cell phone call quality nose dived to cutting out, choppy, inaudible noise.

Now a lot of people are saying that it's not the 850 channel but the T616's ability to connect and deal with the 850 frequency!!

My T616 is now a VERY expensive, useless, paperweight. Not cool.

*rant off*

actually i was in times square the other day and my t616 with ATT was working just fine, making calls and everything. Also, i compared my t616 to my sisters nokia 6200 and the RF was basically the same.

lol .. i vote for the Roger's T193 ... now .. THAT'S bad !!

Ummm... Times Square? Phones that are turned off get great reception there-there are hundreds off cell antennas within blocks of that location and throughout just about every other urban environment. You'll almost always get great reception in a city (at least outside) because there are a great deal more cell towers per square mile to make up for interference with all of the tall structures. Cell carriers literally have to soak the area with signal to get adequate reception.

The only place I get reception is in the cities. It's when I leave that I have none. It's like a light switch-full signal or none at all. And I'm not talking about Mayberry R.F.D. either- I'm talking about suburbs within 20 miles of New York and Philadelphia, among others. When I leave an urban area, Its mandatory that I carry my treo 600, as I've missed so many calls.

Cheers,

D

But now that I see this, I guess I now know a phone that gets atrocious reception everywhere-the SE t616-even though I get good reception generally in the city, (perhaps because I'm with cingular?) it lack of usable reception just outside of urban areas is unacceptable. I don't care if SE's next phones come with world peace and the end to world hunger bundled in the box- this is my last SE phone folks.

Cheers,

I have to say SE phones' RF is not up to par to Nokia's. Once you put it in your pants' pocket, don't expect to receive any more calls.

But at the same time, one should also evaluate the GSM network's performance. After living in both North America and Hong Kong, the network coverage and performance in NA is absolutely weaksauce compared to the one here. I do not understand why Rogers + AT&T (I live in Canada but also go to the states a lot) aren't upgrading their hardwares at all.

For example, my old Panasonic GD88, while mated to People's network in HK (which is not the BEST service provider at all), get full reception at nearly all outdoor location unless I head inside the mall or up to the mountain trails.

On the other hand, once I brought it back to Vancouver and linked up to Rogers ATT, I have never ever seen it with full reception, even when I travelled south to Oregon and Seattle. This is my example to show how poor the GSM coverage really is in NA.

i think most of SE phones' rf is on par with Nokia. for example, i can still make a call on my R520m, T68m with no bars at all, the voice stutters a little but i can still make out what others are saying. if its nokia, i can barely make a call with 1-2 bars.

i agree that GSM in NA sux big time. T68i has really good rf in europe and asia on 900/1800 but its decent in NA.

I have owned 3 se phones and the t68i was the worst. I just have to say i'm not pleased with the reception of se phones.my z600 is the last se phone i will ever buy. my next phone will be a nokia.

LOL....have you guys ever taken apart a T68i? When I replaced the housing on mine, I discovered the natenna of the T68i is a sticker! But with a piece of alum foil below the battery, my rf is pertty good.

Posted by: Global Mobility

Most internal antennas are essentially "stickers." The T68 was a bit weak in the RF department, but made up with cutting edge features that are still desireable on today's phones. Newer firmware R8 has made menu navigation snappy, and not as irritating to use. My opinion.. weak RF, still.

The T616 has very good RF once the firmware is upgraded to R1B. Please make sure that your antenna contacts are solid, and firmware is up to date.

The T616's brethren, T610 is a bit worse in the RF department, even when using the same 1900MHz spectrum. Although both phones seem to look and act the same, there are small differences in performance, and in my opinion, the T616 with R1B firmware is much more desireable to use on 1900MHz as I can maintain a call in the same areas the T610 shows "No Network."

I use a T616 with T-Mobile service.

I have owned both the 616 and 610 - 616 first and just recently got the 610 as an insurance replacement because I left the 616 out in the rain.

Wish I had never done that.

The 610 can't even come close to the RF of my old 616. My home is a good gauge of reception for me, and there is no comparison between the two. The 616 was able to get signal anywhere in my house, whereas the 610 cannot.

I read somewhere that the antenna surface of the 616 is larger than the 610, which may help reception. Since I still have the 616, could I switch out the antenna to the 610 to improve RF quality?

Any help is appreciated on this matter.

Posted by: n3985

Since the T616's antenna is a little more powerful than that of the T610 (to pickup 850MHz), this is for Global Mobility, do you think an antenna swap could yield any noticeable gains?
