I am willing to create any mp3 ringtone for the vx4400 for anyone who can tell me how to load motion images onto my 4400 like the system's hotair balloon's... I will check this thread regularly.. Will also do mp3 ringtones for other offered material.

I thought the 4400 couldn't play mp3's....

It can't play MP3 files Nor can you get it to display custom animated files... Read this:

http://www.tomtracey.com/vx4400_faq...ats%20/%20Sizes

Picture Formats / Sizes – The LG VX4400 will display customized pictures, though currently no one has been successful in getting the phone to display animated files. This is due to a specific format that can only be produced with proprietary application. Though no one specifically has obtained this product first hand, I’ve heard prices run roughly $900. Aside from the animated pictures, the phone will display any file in .bmp or .png format. Either is acceptable. For the file to be sized correctly on the phone, it should be at 120 by 98 pixels.

Really? It cant? Then how come I have about half a dozen mp3 ringers on my 4400? Its pretty easy, just need cool edit. You chop it down to 30 sec or less, go to save as, save it as 16kbps 16khz mono and rename it to (name).mp3.mid and upload it normally. Works perfectly.

As far as moving images, its is not possible without some very very expensive software. Someone found it but its in japanese and very hard to figure out how to use.

EDIT: The phone can also read another image format: bci. It is a propriatary format made by qualcomm, but there is a util that converts the image for you. The long pretty ×××× good considering they are so tiny in size.

Moved to the ringtone/wallpaper forum.

I will prove to anyone that it does work. I have various on my phone and they play just fine.

There are a few steps that you have to go by first...

1.) The mp3 has to be less than 28 sec.

2.) The mp3 must then be saved to mono 16k sample rate
(I use cool edit to edit down to size and re-format)

3.) Then go into the file you saved the 30 sec edit of the mp3. change the name to *.mp3.mid This extention will be read by BitPim 7-5 test and then you can send it to your phone. THE VX4400 WILL PLAY IT!!!!

I will switch your mp3 to a 4400 ringtone by tomorrow the 23rd...

Sweet!! I am so happy to find this! Thanks, Selluthecell, for the tutorial. I just finished testing this out and it does in fact work! I used this to convert a wav file I had to a 16k mono MP3:

LameWIN32.exe

Thanks again, selluthecell!

Thanks for all the tips. I finally got it to work this morning.

Thanks for this. Just hepled a cust with his phone too.

Hey

I got MP3's to work on my phone also. I did run into an issue with the file being too large. But 30 seconds or less seems to work well. My only question is, did anyone else have problems with the audio being really distorted? I cut the volume level of the Mp3 down to -12dB, but it still was very distorted. Did anyone figure out to how to make audio less distorted?

Posted by: mofroe

My files sound fine w/ the audio reduced by 6db and switched to mono, etc

LET ME CLERIFY SOMETHING HERE

I have had no indication that the VX4400 can play MP3 files, one thing I can tell you is that what acemilo posted in one of the threads is that when he went to save a file, he saved it in this format:

(name).mp3.mid

If you look at it, it has .MID after mp3, which makes the file a MIDI ringtone! the only thing is that .mp3 is a part of the file name, and not the extension therefore not making this an MP3, but maybe a high quality MIDI POLYPHONIC ringtone. The only LG phone with Verizon that I have heard can play MP3 files is the VX6000, which of course is a higher model.

MIDI ringtones can have 16 chords, or 32. I have not been able to compose a 64 yet. The more chords it has, the higher the quality and more sounds that can be heard when playing the ringtone, so most likely what acemilo is creating is a 32bit MIDI ringtone.

If some of you have actually uploaded an MP3 file, then all I can say is that it has a different firmware on the phone, possibly newer that was made to accept MP3s, but I haven't heard of a firmware update lately for that phone.

Posted by: berlinbullet

Ah, but you see, the 4400 can play MP3's as the ringtones. The extension of .mp3.mid is only to clarify to some users that you just have to rename the extension. This makes bitpim and the phone thing it is just another MID file. From that point on, the 4400 will play the mp3. And thats not with any firmware updates to let it play the mp3.

Also, to clarify, there is no way to create such a 'high quality' midi file that would sound like an MP3 due to it just being a set of instructions basically for the phone to play and in that manner can not do voice.

If you all want to create your own ringtones, or just download pre-made ones check out http://groups.yahoo.com/4400mp3tones/. They are simple enough to make and/or upload.

jimboscomp - You are completely wrong on this one. I know the 4400 plays mp3s FOR A FACT. I have personally taken a wav file, converted it to a 16k 30 second mp3 file, and loaded onto my phone several times, as have others on here. It played every mp3 file I've uploaded just fine. Granted it's a little distorted because of the crappy speaker but it DID play them. And, no, it is not some new firmware I can assure you of that. There are several on here with varying versions of the 4400's firmware so that, in a word, blows that theory.

Anywho, not trying to be a jerk or anything just stating that is does in fact work.

Posted by: jimboscomp

Then I stand corrected on the issue that the VX4400 doesn't play MP3 files. One thing that I have studied though on a computer is that you cannot have 2 extensions placed on one file at the same time, it's either an MP3 or something else. I took my information on support of MP3 files from past articles that I have read, though it's been a while since I read them and I do not remember where they are.

Can we check on something, I want to know if the VX4400 also supports AAC files like my Nok3300. Also, I just added a few wallpapers for the VX4400 this morning on my WAP site, if you are able to download imaghes directly through the phone's browser, you may do so.

Posted by: bBCrazy

Thanks but...Verizon has actually disabled downloading directly to the phone. :rolleyes2 It sucks...I wish they'd enable it but they want to make money through GIN. Oh well....thankfully I have a data cable.

As far as the AAC file goes, if somebody doesn't beat me to it, I'll try it out and get back to you on it!

Posted by: berlinbullet

I doubt that it will accept the AAC files. The only reason I am guessing it can take an MP3 is that somehow when you get the sample rate and quality at that certain low setting it can use its firmware and read it semi-similar to a MID file.

And as far as having two extensions, it only has one, the mid extension, but the .mp3 before is just to lessen the confusion for some, it isn't necesary to leave on there.

Posted by: ben4uf

oh so thats why its dam near impossible for me to find a site to download ringtones for my 4400 directly to phone. verizon disabled the feature. doh! 3gupload.com worked great when i had sprint, free and direct to phone, but sprint blows.

newbie question: so how much is this data cable and where should i get it? (model/part #?)

thanks all.

Posted by: bBCrazy

ben4uf - yep...it sucks. But I can deal with a little thing like that with the coverage VZW has. hehe

Anyway, I got mine at Radioshack, a while back, for about $19.99 plus tax, but it's gone up since then. It's made by Prolific, FYI. Here's the info:

Part #: 17-783
Price (as of 4/15/03): $22.49
Radioshack direct link (click here!)

Posted by: bBCrazy

jimboscomp - Well I finally got around to testing out the 4400's capability of playing AAC files. Unfortunately, as berlinbullet predicted, it wasn't able to. Now, granted, I may not have converted something properly as I've never converted to AAC file format before now, but I did try to the best of my abilities. If anyone else cares to try, perhaps someone who has more experience with AAC's, please feel free to prove me wrong. Until then, all I can say is the VX4400 will not play AAC's. Anyway, hope this helps you out!

holy crap it worked after trying for 30 min it work. too bad the speaker sucks wow thanks guys.

kool

Posted by: hexXx117

I just downloaded Cool Edit 2.0, cut down my MP3 size to under 28 seconds and bit pim says the file is too large to send. What gives!?! Someone help me out here please! Before I throw my phone and computer out my window

Posted by: SAKITA

the file needs to be under 60kb file size

Posted by: jimboscomp

yeah, there's a limit to how big one certain file can be. I know Nokias can't accept anything over 50 someodd KB in size. The only phones that have no limits are the ones that can take memory sticks! e.g. Nokia 3300, 3600, ect....

MY handle says I use my phone so much I have a third ear....I guess HoFo knows me well, I've gone about 150 minutes over my allotment this month! lol

For clarification, the file name extension under Windows is perceived as the the LAST characters following the LAST period. You can have any sequence of periods and letters, but the OS only uses the criteria above to TRY and determine the file type from the extension.

I've files FULL of periods download from Unix and Linux servers.

The true file type is never determined exclusively by the extension. The extension is a visual clue as to what the file type MIGHT be and a system link to the proper program to open it with. That's why Windows always warns when you change the last period and letters.

An MP3 file can have the *.mp3 extension changed to *.mid or *.txt or *.zip, BUT that doesn't mean the data contained within the file is reformated, or that a program like WinZip would properly recognize it an be able to open it.

MP3 files are digitized audio, MIDI files are really more akin to a set of program instructions, events, that MIDI instruments and software interpret. There are very few programs that can convert a *.mp3 or *.wav to a *.mid, most are monophonic and do a really crappy job.

How do you cut the volume of an mp3 file from 12 db to 6 db?

That would require the use of a DAW application like SoundForge. Once the file was open you could normalize and adjust the settings up or down.

There are other audio editing programs that probably can do it as well, I can't name any except CoolEdit.
