is the Treo 600 locked to a particular network?

i was poking around the handspring website and i noticed in the FAQ that it mentioned that the treo can be used w\ other providers but specifically the cingular wireless version is specially customized to work w\ that service in terms of the menus etc. (i beleive they do the same thing w\ their regular mobiles)

if they do in fact come "locked" to a particular provider (i would be using the AT&T version) how easy/hard are they to unlock for use w\ a different sim card?

thanks for the info... i think its gonna be my next phone, so i am doing as much research on it beforehand.

CMM.

I bought the AT&T version and have unlocked it completely. I am using it on T-Mobile with no problems. It appears that the settings for the GSM providers are already in the phone, so that when I unlocked it and placed my T-Mobile SIM in the phone it was immediately recognized and the GPRS settings that Handspring entered were activated for me!

AT&T welcome screen still shows up when I turn the wireless mode on and off, but that's all. No big deal.

I found the unlock info on TreoCentral.com.

You can get a factory unlocked Treo directly from Handspring. If you get one locked and need to unlock it, you can do that too, but please check the Marketplace for that.

FYI, you can also change the welcome screen to anything you want. More details on that can also be found at Treo Central.

The AT&T model doesn't come unlocked though....?

I thought there were objections to this. Didn't they remove that info from treocentral?

I thought the cingular version was unlocked and the at&t and t-mobile version come locked.

I have a T-Mobile version purchased through Handspring. I placed a Cingular sim in it and was able to dial out without a problem. I didn't do extensive testing, just tried that one call and then replaced my T-Mobile (it's actually an old Aerial Communications) sim card.

I plan to have Kevin at Bongo Wireless unlock my ATTWS Treo at some point. He's done other work for me and is great to work with.

I have a Treo 600 from T-Mobile that was locked. I called T-Mob and they gave me a simple unlock code. If you can get AT&T to give it to you, the procedure is simple. You'll need a "foreign" SIM card to put in the Treo to enable the unlock procedure though - which you can borrow from someone or use a prepaid.

ATTWS doesn't give unlocK codes AFAIK.

The latest firmware for an unbranded "INT" (international version..Cingular and AT&T have their own f/w's) is out. Although, you can completely remove carrier brandings by using a patch. Detailed info is available on treocentral.com. I was able to upgrade my T-Mobile Treo 600 (INT version), to the latest 3.04 firmware.
