8100 Hinges BROKEN

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

both hinges on my 8100 have broken

just opening the phone, i've never dropped it or anything

i opened it one day and heard crack, and the left hinge cracked at the bottom, then a couple weeks later the other one cracked as well
now the flip is all floppy

am i the only one this has happened to?

is there a support number i can call sanyo for to complain about the quality of the hinge?

My wifes 8100 just did that about 2 weeks ago.

My old 5300 did this about 4 months ago - just 1 week before the One Year Warranty was to expire. I called SPCS CSR and they told me to get to a retail store ASAP and see if they could help.

I visited my local store and they took it into the back. They told me they could not determine if the hinge broke from being defective or abuse. (They mentioned that I may have opened the phone too far, which I did not do, of course)

They said that because I am a good customer (6 Year Customer, $100+ Plan, $$$$$ Credit Rating in the system) they would give me a REFURB 8100 for free. That was the best they would do.

So, it is a downgraded phone (small screen, no flash on camera, no zoom on camera) but overall, I'm happy.

FYI - My 5300 broke after 1 Year with the following stats:
CALLS - 5,454
MINUTES - 14,847

The phone was not abused and it just broke. I don't think they last much when they are used at that level.

I just checked my new 8100 (now 3 months old) and it has the following stats:
CALLS - 1702
MINUTES - 4542

So, I'm on pace for about the same usage. We'll see how long it lasts.

That is a defect with Sanyo's hinges. Happens frequently with (not abuse..) non-consistent care or occassionally, high usage. With 1 week before the warranty expires, they HAVE to give you a refurbished phone. Has nothing to do with your customer status, it's under warranty and a manufacturer defect. Nuff said.

So this is something I have to worry about for my 4500? Is there a way to make sure it doesn't happen, since it's not related to abuse?

5150, 5300, 8100, 8200 all use the same hinges. I don't think that the 54/55/7300s will be problematic. 8200 could be (DOH!@#$)..

Whew!

Type:

1. ##786 (RUN)
2. Menu --> Save Phone Number

well i know it was said a while ago, but if u compare the hinges of the 8100 to the hinges of the vm4500 they look the same. and speaking of the natural wear and tear of that phone... well that's how i got my vm4500!

I have the Sanyo VM4500/SCP5500 and I had it less than six months and the hinge broke. Phone was never dropped and has not a scratch on it. Sprint is VERY unhelpful concerning supplying a replacement. They want me to buy another phone saying that it was caused to abuse on my part. BEWARE!!!

Posted by: sneak16

My next phone will not be a Sanyo, primarily because of their quality control and their misleading information regarding issues with their products (the redialing bug is YOUR problem, not ours.. etc.).

Tsk, Tsk, someone needs to take charge and design a better phone than what Sprint currently offers.. a majority of junk.

Helpful tip for anyone who has a Sprint VM4500/SCP5500 and the hinge breaks on them.

If you call the Sprint Help 888 # and tell them your problem and they will tell you that it is your problem and it is not covered by your manufacturers warranty. This is a lie.

Tell them to look up the Known defects for the Sanyo 8100 and advise them that they have the same hinge. And be persistent.

After 6 hours on the phone, telling them to check the Sanyo 8100 defects was the only thing that finally got me my replacement phone free of charge.

Hope this helps.

Does the wireless insurance cover this. Do you get a new phone when you have insurance or a refurb?

Posted by: sneak16

Its supposed to be coverd because it's a defect. That doesn't mean the rep on the other side of the phone or the counter will comprehend that. Sometimes its better to speak slow Just remind them to look under Known Defects; they will find it eventually.

you will most likely recive a refurb on an insurance claim
