Restoring phonebook data

My local Verizon store fried my 8600 when they tried to update the phone with the wrong software. Luckily, I had backed everything up with BitPim. However, I have got everything restored to the phone, except for the phonebook.
I restore nvm/phbk/phonebook with the original, but the phone will only display the number of entries that were in the phonebook before the restoration. For instance, if I place 3 dummy entries in the phonebook then restore the phonebook file, it will only display the first 3 out of 50 numbers in the phonebook. It seems that the number of entries in the phonebook is stored somewhere else on the phone. Any one know where?
Maybe I'll just have to create 50 dummy entries, then restore the file to get them back - a major pain, but easier than entering all of the data again.

I had a similar problem with the 8900. I had backed up my phone with bitpim, and the phone would not turn on so i could get my old phone numbers. So when i put the old phonebook file back in i only got as many numbers from my old phone that i had currently in my new phone. So i assumed i needed to make a whole lot of dummy files and that takes a long time. To speed it up a little i used the pc sync program to make a whole bunch of dummy numbers and send them to my phone. Then I replaced the dummy phonebook file with my backed up phonebook. Next I exported the numbers on my phone to my pc sync program. Then i sent the numbers back to my phone using pc sync, to make sure all the programming was correct. When I looked at my numbers on my phone a few of the names were messed up, like 2 or 3, so I fixed those and saved the phonebook using pc sync again and then sent the numbers back.

Hosed my phone!
I thought I'd try the approach of just entering a bunch of dummy entries and then restoring the phonebook file. It seemed to work fine, but when I went to delete an extra dummy entry, my phone locked up. I removed the battery and it booted once. Then, stupidly, I tried to delete it again, and now the phone is in a boot loop, displaying the Verizon display then "dog.c 00607".
Anyone know what this is? Please help!

Your phone is hosed. Nothing can be done except a return and hope they give you a new one.

Yeah... I got a new phone, it just would be nice if we could figure out the phonebook file format. I pretty much know how the phonebook file works and how to add entries, I'm just not quite sure on the nvm001 file changes and how they relate. If I can figure it all out, I'd throw together phonebook editing software. I'll probably have to wait til the Verizon MOK software comes out (should be soon, I hear), then figure it out from there.

If you back up the whole file structure with BitPim will that do a complete restore of the phone to the last state that the backup was run? Phonebook and all?

yes, it will. But in my case, the phone wouldn't get past the boot screen, so it did me little good.

Hi Apollosmith.
Were you ever able to restore the phone book? I just got a new phone from Verizon after they fried my old one doing a software update. Like you I discovered that just uploading the backed-up phonebook file from my old phone isn't good enough. Were you ever able to figure out that last little bit about the number of entries?

If you fried your phone, what can you do? Will Verizon replace your phone?
