(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: sdsviet

i wonder wat do all u guys do like jobwise or no jobs for us students here. i wonder how u guys are able to afford this stuff. for me im a college student still so i just dont eat for couple of months and then i was able to pay for my p900. that's usually how it works for me. like the guys like bengal and 3vw and howard. how u guys just go crazy on the gadgets and get to go to all these gadget shows and stuff. man i wish i was able ot just do that for a living sometimes.

Posted by: paedur5

Well, so far I've only paid the deposit on my P900. It's still not expected in stock until sometime in April.
At the moment I'm still a wannabe P900 owner who is here dreaming of the day when I finally get the call so I can find out for real all the things I'm learning here.
I'm working with HK's favourite airline here in HK.

Posted by: Juvi

Am a student.. thankfully graduate this year, an start
work in August.. so finally get some money actually coming in to account....

how i afforded the p900
http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...15&pagenumber=2

basically that required a few quite weeks of not drinking... and a very nice bank manager who extended my overdraft...

need to buy more lottry tickets

Posted by: The Rex

quit my job, doing research over the summer, going back to school in sept for phd

Posted by: Midnight Sun

im currently co-running a cingular store in south jersey.

i was attending school but am not currently. i will be going back soon though.

i afforded my P900 through using a lil bit of extra cash from my pay as well as the profit i made from selling other phones that I had that I was no longer using. Those things combined pretty much paid for my P900

Posted by: MTDude

I edit movie trailers.

Posted by: cmc0

I end up spending too much money on phones and then I ending working 16 hours a day!

But I don't think you have to be rich or anything to own a P900. it's just how you proritize your spending. Some people like to buy phones and some collect other things

Posted by: Bengalboy

I'm a lawyer....who loves gagets and phones... Not rich by any means, not poor either, but thanks to 7 years of college I can make a decent living. However, the money I used to spend drinking and partying was much more than my current cell phone addiction

As Cmco said, phones are relative.....and much cheaper to collect than motorcycles, cars, planes or yachts....the real toys of "Rich Boys"....and I defer to JeffHarris to answer those questions....

My next acquisition for the "Bleeding Edge" mantle....

Posted by: sdsviet

im actually be leaving school after this year to work for a lil bit and then go back since im going to transfer out anyways. the rents wasnt too fond of that but i've been in school too long and havnt really gotten nowhere and i dont want to be wasting anymore of their money. hopefully i get the hook up from my friend with a good paying job this summer and then start saving up for that p1000 coming out. after that really is just saving up for more school later. 7yrs eh bengal, im guessing its 4 for the b.a. and 3 for law school. yea im approaching the van wilder plan myself. that's why im gonna just start working.

Posted by: shockdaddyd

i'm a freelance art director. i work mostly on tv commercials, print ads, billboards and the like. i bought my p900 to help me keep my life in order -- travel biz, expenses, billable hours, expenses, calendar, etc.

since i use my p900 as my business line and for all work related organization it made for a nice writeoff. being an independent contractor that's a big bonus. in essence my work pays for my hobby.

LOL, I hear that, I'm an avid poster on benzworld and I can tell you, the amount of spending on phones I've done comes nowhere near the amount it costs to maintain a Mercedes or have weekend parties at Dream!

BTW: Mark, 5G should be out within the next couple of months. Lars says hi btw from CeBit!

Not cheaper if you collect both

Posted by: jeffharris

And if you really want to see a "Pro" automobile/phone collector, check out the www.my-symbian.com UIQ forum moderators" "Nasharty"s MAJOR luxury car collection in Switzerland..... I think its in the "Lounge" forum, under the "car lovers" sticky thread -- I mean MAJOR collection! Hope to see it when I am in Geneva in a month or 2 if he's there.

im a student at the stockholm school of economics going towards a graduate in business management, bought my p900 used on the net, financed it by being a professor. (not as fancy as it sounds, i have a computerclass with 300 students each year... hard work...)

Posted by: Bengalboy

Very nice Jeff...I was hoping you would bust out the SL...as for Nasharty, I've seen his Ferrari, don't know what he does but he does it really well or a whole lot of it!!

I am a molecular biologist... I do cancer research ... entry level pay since I just graduated with my second MS degree last May... so I was in college for 10 years and still ain't gettin paid!! It will happen when I gain some more 'real world' experience tho so it's all good . I had to do some massive financial cutbacks in order to get the phone, no groceries for a couple of weeks... got my pantry cleaned out tho And you know how much time it takes to beat up little kids for lunch money?? And how long it takes for that lunch money to add up to the cost of a P900??? ANYWHO... I have one now and can eat again... YAY!!!

Just noticed the thread and thought I would jump in!

My "Job" job is working as a Deployment and Support Engineer for a Telecommunications company. I travel all over the world (literally) and install and give training to customers on-site. The software side is for reporting on networks (usage, performance..) the hardware side is UMTS/GSM/GPRS etc test tools. These devices integrate into a network and allow complete simulation of all mobile network elements.. right down to individual subscribers.
My "Fun" job is writing (not that often anymore.. sadly) for MobileBurn.com and playing with and reviewing cell phones and related tech.

Posted by: Bengalboy

What a "Smart" group of Members we have and very diverse as well...molecular biologists and artists...engineers and students. All of us sharing our experience and unique talents for the benefit of the forum....Makes me wanna give all of you a hug

An excellent thread, I know what alot of the older members do but it is great to find out more about the newer UIQ contributors. Look forward to reading more and Sean.....tell us about CBIT?

Posted by: sdsviet

wow there is definately variety in this. nice. maybe we can get some networking here so there'll be some good hookups. i bet we can start some crazy company with all this guys here right now. that'll be cool. but yea for me im gonna be working at ABT the electronics company that does all the crazy customizations. i'll be doing home theater customization. stuff like projector screens, 6.1 surround sound, thx sound and all that. i think it'll be a good experience for me since i dont know much right now and my friend is gonna teach me all of it on the job. about the crazy company, i wonder what we will be making or doing. hmmm....there goes those crazy ideas of mine again. hehe

Hi,
I'm currently a student sudying Business, I.C.T, Computing and Financial Studies at college, hoping to go on to study Business Management at University.

Also have a part time job at ASDA (Walmart) nothing special but keeps me going.

I got my P900 at Christmas time, I know you lot are probably thinking that whats the point in having a P900 when i'm only at college but I've had lots of phone and they were just toys compared to this.

It just keeps my day organised and helps me get everything done in time.

Cheers

CeBIT was the bomb! Just writing a bit now on the SX1 Special Edition. Too many neat things to begin to mention them all. The after show parties were also good... non-stop free beer! How can you go wrong?
Spent several days just walking about, taking pics, meeting with the companies. Hooked up in the evenings with Jorgen from Infosync, Eric, Carlos and Justin from the Feature, Kinny from imobile, Louis from Club sonyEricsson.. it truly was a geek fest!

His family owns a "hotel chain" in Switzerland. Wasn't specific, but when you own hotels in Switzerland, you own the building, the land, everything. I am sure they do fine. I know I can't stay in Geneva in a 5 star hotel for less than $500. That is double of NY, and second to London, and not including exclusive resorts, Geneva has the most expensive hotels (or, more accurately, impossible to gets deals) of any city.

I have missed him a couple of times, hopefully I will get to do some "Symbian bonding" next trip. If you read this Nasharty, hoping to meet you in April, or May!

I am also impressed by the diversity and intellect of this group!

I have dual careers. I am an attorney (like BengalBoy) and also am full-time Computer Science faculty at a community college. That way I can afford toys like the P900

Posted by: sempai

Consideration, some of us that write about these things or use them for work purposes get to consider them work-related expenses at the end of the year

Too bad the P900 didn't make it to my hot little hands before 12/31/2003

Sounds great! I'll be in Geneva the weekend of April 23rd for only 3 days (and also the week of May 15th, which is too late for you), so if you don't mind a 3 hour car ride/train ride. I'll PM you this week.

Jeff

Heya...
Sounds fun. I can make a weekend of it. PM away, we can sort it out.

I'm an emergency medical doc by education, but now am a medical director for my city's fire department. We run 911. A lot of education just to drive a car with lights and sirens

I'm a student... and I work in a mobile phone store.

I afforded it thanks to the fact that UK mobile operators subsidize handsets HEAVILY! Lol Sure, we get few minutes for our money - but cheap phones!

Also, working for a big network gives you good deals, now and then, like my XDA II, unconneted, for £150.

Cheers

Posted by: fijbert

I'm a student by day, and I sell mobiles by night
I own my own mobile retialing company, going online in a few days.. very psyched!!
hope to see u guys shopping there soon
I am probably going to advertise on hofo

got the P900 as a xmas gift, and the other one I bought it by selling off the NGage, which I got from selling off a T610
and now I make enuff money to afford any phone I want anytime..
saving up for a Lotus Elise, a Vertu (almost there!) and a patent..

in regards to Nasharty, I think he owns a chain of hotels if I'm not mistaken... gr8 guy...

Posted by: Lagos

fijbert, maybe not my business but just wondering what do you use the second P900 for?

Posted by: sdsviet

yea i dont get it. why do u need more than one of the same phone?

Posted by: fijbert

cuz once my P800 broke, I got screwed.. lost everything
cldnt find another P800 (as they stopped making them)

this is to prevent such a thing from happening..
I use it as a back up

but for the moment being, my brother uses it...

Posted by: sdsviet

we got here:

students
industrial design major
movie trailer editor
lawyer
freelance art director
business management major
molecular biologist
music production
commercial division of the textile manufacturing company
deployment and support engineer for a telecommunications company
cis major (im guessing its "computer information sciences")
business, i.c.t, computing and financial studies
doctor (soon to be heart surgeon)
computer science faculty and lawyer
medical director
mobile retailing company owner

man with all this. lets start rocking on building our hofo company. lets just name it "HoFo". i like it. so wat shall we do? hehe

A word of warning sdsviet. At the community college where I teach, one of the administrators were asking me advice on cellphones. I told her I was an avid member of HoFo. She reacted suspiciously. I realized then she was reacting to the "ho" in HoFo. I explained it was not a pimping forum and took her to the site to see. Unfortunately I picked as an example BengalBoy's pimpin stick thread. That didn't help at all.

But you are correct. There is a lot of talent here. I learn far more than I contribute, but hopefully some day I will be more knowledgable as well as richer so I can afford all these neat but expensive toys.

Posted by: phibeee

I can't afford the p900. I bought a p800 back in the day (what was that? only a year ago?)

Since then, I've had a car payment, a girlfriend, and now a mortgage to pay.

I only have a modest job as a web developer. Reading all you jet-setters makes me wish I was in a field that paid me mucho bucks, have expensive cars and gave me the opportunity to see more of the world

Then again, I'm grateful for what I have too.

Posted by: Technosaint

hey I'm with Sdsviet about starting a HoFo company We'll have 'branches' all over the world... have an international company overnight! We could corner the market with our brains and some of you guys' business sense! I have family in Dubai and I'm in the US so we can figure out some way of starting up an inventory... now we need someone to start on the website, a lawyer to figure out the legalities, and so on and so forth, maybe soon we will all be able to get our own Benz/BMW/Aston Martin or whatever your flavor of the month might be Just a thought!
Much like Genghis, I am a molecular biologist by day and a technology consultant at all other times, so I have my fingers dabbed in cell phones, PDAs, PCs and even security. I am considered quite knowledgeable and none of it would be possible without my friends here at HoFo, so I shall say zees only once 'I am not worthy'!!! You guys rawk!

Hmmm ... this is an even more useful group than I thought. Given my ex, I could use both a Financial Director and a Psychiatrist.

The sad thing is I don't get time to sleep. Work keeps me so busy it interferes with my social, marriage and personal life!

Anyway phibeee and technosaint,

Drop me a PM or AIM:cmc0 and maybe we can meet. I'll make sure to have all of my phones on hand. I'll be getting my Gx30 and Blackberry by next week.

This thread is certainly interesting!

I'm a BBA student here in Waterloo full-time but work summers in Germany for GM/Opel and spend much of my free time working for a major federal political party here in Canada...on the board of directors for my local riding and so on. Quite fun and stimulating. Hopefully an upcoming election as well.

I'm still fairly 'poor' tough and only sound financial planning/budgeting allow me to do all this and maintain my phone hobby, car, and partying on weekends. But hey...I guess that's what all my business courses are for eh?

Posted by: smartd

Hey, thought I'd post even though I don't currently own a "P900" . But I did help some ppl get'm so that should count heh.

Anyways I'm a Comp. Eng. managin a startup venture here in Dubai, UAE . I moved from Toronto, Canada and having a blast !

Tried to work out some Dubai events (like this ) but I guess there aren't as many people here as the HoFo meets I went to once in T.O.

Cheers,

D

If I tell what I do I won't be able to surf the HoFo site anymore... Just kidding (or am I haha) I'm self employed....
