CDM8900 Radio Shack CABLE

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: shawn_bowen

If you want to connect your CDM8900 to your bitpim software use
Cable from Radio Shack

http://www.radioshack.com/product.a...uct%5Fid=17-792

But use this software driver for cable "NOT Curite PD-K500 Driver" THIS ONE IS FROM future dial makers of datat cable select LGV6000 phone model when installing it works great.

http://www.futuredial.com/support/u...ers/Drivers.htm

And then manualy select what com port your phone is installed on in BITPIN

I can modify files It ROCKS

Posted by: RnRExpress

I found that out too. It wouldn't work with the Curtel driver, but I downloaded the ones from FutureDial and BitPim worked great.

Have you had any luck in changing the alert tones for when receiving a voice mail or message???

Posted by: JohninMI

I've got the the RS cable, FutureDial software & drivers, Verizon QuickLink Mobile software and my phone set to RS232C. I can connect to the 1X web with no problem. I can't get BitPim to connect to my phone. BitPim sees my cable on Com4, but not the phone. I've even exchanged the cable at the Shack. I'm getting to the point where I'm willing to drop the bucks on the MOK8400 kit. Any ideas from you guru's out there as to what step I'm missing?

John

Think I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.

Mine works fine with the Curitel driver.

Using Bitpim and Verizon Dialer.

Posted by: shawn_bowen

In order to use the bitpim you can only explore and edit the file System. I have Hacked the Ringers And I will post tommorow how to add them to you phone with an explination of the text file.
And where to Put the actual .mid files.
I have had great sucess using a Hex editor and will post screen shots later today explaining all I have learned.

DOES ANYONE Know where to put Backgrounds and animations if you can post a dump of your phone files of the Pleaase Provide me a Copy of your "user" Folder and a copy of your "db" Folder and if "backgrounds/ animations" need to pe put anywhere else in phone please provide that folder from the root area of phone.

You guys are making me jealous. The only thing I can get to work is the Verizon Dialer. I've tried all the tips and drivers listed here and in the other discussions. I don't want to use the dialer, I want to sync to my pc and hack some files.

To those that have the Shack cable...does it have the box in the middle or is it just a straight cable? Mine has the box in the middle and does not match the photo on the Shack site.

I got the same prob, I ordered the cable from RadioShack item# 17-792, but they send me #17-783(the one with the box, the one you have),

bitpim doesnt recognize it, but the pc does recognize the cable as Prolific USB to Serial, PC Sync from Curitel does recognize but it only works for Messaging, phone book, and schedule......

So I went to the shack returned the cable and reordered the 17-792....now I have to wait.....

they give you I believe 30 days to return it so go and dot it...

Good Luck!!!!!

I got the Radio Shack cable working.

Couple of things to check.

As stated, use the USB driver from futuredial.com

I picked the VX6000 driver and it is identified as "Prolific USB to Serial Comm Port"

I have the Radio Shack cable with the box in the middle. (It is apparently a serial cable that uses the USB interface)

My bigest problem was remembering to turn off Palm Hotsync before using BitPim.

And I could only use BitPim to save a copy of the filesystem and to replace the ERI_binary.bin file with Mentalbob's version (to remove the Verizon banner on the subLCD screen.

I used Curitel's PC Sycn software (telling it I was a TX-95C phone) to copy my phonebook from my PC.

Hope this helps.

You Need Radio Shack Cable #19 and it has a small converter Inline. Attached is a pic of Proper Cable & Picture was taken with my phone

"FROM MY UNDERSTANDING YOU NEED CABLE WITH BOX INLINE"

Both cables will work. The cable with the inline box is a USB to RS232 (Serial) cable. For this you need the Prolific drivers. Then it treats the phone as a generic modem on the COM port exposed by the cable. If you use the direct USB cable (no inline box), you need to use the Curitel drivers as the phone has onboard USB to serial translation and these drivers address that.

What I did was this...

1) Installed FutureDial's drivers
2) Hooked up the 17-792 cable from RadioShack (the straight USB LX6000 cable) to the phone, and then plugged the cable into the USB port on the computer
3) Opened BitPim, and changed the COM port to 3 in my case.

Worked like a charm...

I probably should have bought a Powerball ticket that day...

Thx guys!!!!!

Finally got mine up and working with the Radio Shack cable with the FutureDial drivers. The others did not work.

Last night i got rid of the Verizon banner and the flashing LCD.

can anyone tell me how/where ringtone are put so i can send them to my phone with the cable.

I have Verizon and saw that the little app that Zaediex does not work with Verizon phones.

Posted by: error94

For ringtones, the first thing you have to do is email yourself one through youphonenumber@vzwpix.com using Outlook or other email client (don't go through the online site). You can use MP3s, but when emailing you need to rename as .mid and keep it around 90kb or less.

This message will be your "seed" ringer, so don't delete it! You will be using it for each new ringer you add.

Once you receive the email on your phone, open the message then choose the option to Save Media. Rename the file to what you want to call the ringer. Use BitPim to overwrite your e-mailed file with the ringer you want to use (I forget the exact directory, but you should be able to find it by browsing around in BitPim). If overwriting an MP3, I've found that anything bigger than about 120kb will upload, but won't play. You now have a new ringer available!

You can use your original message over and over this way. Save Media. Rename. Overwrite in BitPim.

There are several threads which give more detailed instructions.

To Upload Ringtones using Just Bitpin
I have Uploaded " Five Hundred" Ring Tones PLEASE DONT ABUSE MY SERVER

ftp://dir.babots.com/Ring_Tones/

You need to put the ring tones in a folder under
Is system root "user/sound/ringer/
Put your actual .mid Files in this folder

"Song Titles Are Case Sensative"
They need to be same "CASE" as in download_snd.txt File also modify song titles using uderscore "_" for spaces in song title.."

Ill upload a copy of the File that pointes to the user ringtone
Is system root "db/download_snd.txt

Ill Upload A Copy Of My download_snd.txt file to look at!!

Here is the HEX Editor I use to edit these txt files it helps alot because it lets you highlight and change how you look at the hex files GREAT HACKING TOOL....

http://www.expertcomsoft.com

Highlighted Text In this link are what you should modify.

ftp://dir.babots.com/Ring_Tones/Hex_Capture.JPG

There is a internal pointer and the "name lendth" should be "16h [2] long"
Look at my pattern to confirm this.

Thank you,
Shawn A. Bowen
Systems Engineer

PS I Am Working Hard At Backgrounds and Animations If You Have any input for verizon PLEASE POST HERE Thank You...

Let us know if you get a cable without the inline box. The cable I got at the store is model 17-792 but is does not look like the picture on the web site without the inline box - the 17-792 from the store has the box.

There were 2 guys working in the store with absolutely nothing to do. I had questions, they were clueless.

Will do...altough I don't think it would make any difference, apparently with bitpim the only thing you can do is edit the filesystem......and I didnt click that tab.

Go check it and get back to me.....

if you manage to do it, I will really need to learn how to do this step by step, download the ringtones and images, I'm not a programmer so I'm basically pretty confused when people start talking about hex editing.

Maybe start a thread, "Step by Step for dummies on how to download ringtones and Images using bitpim and data cable"

Will this cable also work with the audiovox 8410?

Verizon now sells a Mobile Office Kit for the 8900 for $40. It says nothing about being able to sync contacts, pictures, ringtones, etc.
Would I be better off with some of the other options discussed here?

ok, people in here are really going to start doubting me when I make this next statement, but...... Verizon actually fixed this annoyance for me the day I bought the phone!

I purchased it from the Montgomeryville, PA Verizon store, which also has a tech dept. in it. A VERY cool tech named Mike helped me... he loaded a non-ERI-PRL (non-electronic-roaming-indicator-preferred-roaming-list(I think )

If you cannot fix this prob yourself (I never had to try) call *226 and ask them where the nearest service center to you is.... then go there and hope that one of the techs there is as cool as Mike....

Posted by: coreytime

what about ringtones/wallpapers...does bitpim work the same way as it did on my vx4400

Posted by: mookienyc

If I buy the Radio shack cable and install bitpim will I be able to download images to my PC. I'm stuck with all these camera shots and not able to retruieve them. No, I won't pay Verizon .25 per photo...

Thanks.

Posted by: TechHead

yes.

Posted by: mookienyc

Okay I got the RS cable and installed the Future Tel drivers and when I run bitpim it finds the driver but when I try to connect to the phone it comes up with the following error...what is going wrong? I use WinXP.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Having the following problems:

1. I can connect to the phone and read the file system and was able to back it up using Bitpim. BUT... when I try to overwrite my seed ringtone Bitpim starts to overwrite then stays "busy" for ever. Have to unplug the cable to get Bitpim to stop processing. Bitpim DID overwrite a portion of the file, since the file size changed after trying to overwrite, but it never finished.

Using Vox 8900 with CellularOne. Running WinXP, Radio Shack cable with the box, Futuredial driver for VX6000, Bitpim configured for VX6000 (also tried TM520), manually matched com ports in both Bitpim and Windows device manager (tried several ports). I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

2. I picked up the phone when it was plugged in and got a small continuous shock when my finger covered both the side volume buttons at the same time. Is this normal? Could this be related to problem #1?

Anyone got ideas?

Posted by: SnoopyII

As soon as I get the files from Shawn I will host them on my FTP site and every can download to their heart's content as I have no bandwidth limitation.

Posted by: CButler147

OK, I installed the Futuredial drivers, and not much happened. Actually nothing happened at all. I selected the LGVX6000. When I plugged in my USB cable it installed Prolific USB to Serial. I then manually went into my device manager and updated that driver to one in the Futuredial package, and now when I plug in my USB cable I get FutureDial USB-to-Serial Cable (COM5) under the ports section and Profilific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM4) under the Universal Serial Bus controllers section. Nowhere do I get a phone name like the walkthrough for Futuredial installation says I should. Well Bitpim works fine and so does updating my phonebook using Curitel's program but I want to be able to use Verizon’s dialer also. I have the Radioshack cable with the inline converter. Can anyone give me a walkthrough on how to get Verizon dialer to work because whenever I go to have it search for my phone it comes up with nothing.

Posted by: slimrob

CButler147,

I think you have to match the COM ports, either both on 5 or both on 4.

Also has anyone been able to use bitpim to tranfer their address book to the 8900? If so, how? If not what did you use and how? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Posted by: slimrob

Oh ok I mis read what you typed. When I did mine in my device amnager on my computer under ports was a list of options. One of the options said 'Profilific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM4)". So I chose that option and in settings in bitpim I put COM 4 in there as well and it did initialy come up with an error. I just clicked it to try again and it found it. Hope this helps, if not, sorry.

So,....How do I backup the files on the cdm8900. I'm gonna try getting rid of the banners,so I'd like to have a backup in case anything goes wrong. This is my first try with this sort of stuff and I'd hate to screw up my new phone. Thanks.

Posted by: devwild

I just got the radio shack cable (#19, but with the serial conversion box) it works fine with verizon's dialing software and the futurelink drivers, but trying to retrieve the filesystem in BitPim is not working.

Log just shows it switching modes trying to link up. I am using the right com port.... What could I be missing?

Thanks for any tips

Posted by: adamnur

ok, i've had some problems uploading ringtones on my cdm8900.

1. CID's ringtone tool keeps getting "run time error 9, subscript out of range". Now, i'm confused...i don't know what to do.

2. I tried many times to use CID's ringtone tool, but it just won't work. So I edited the download_snd.txt myself...then I saw what cuwmb said about not trying to edit the file...does the program do it a different way?? Right not the file says

” In.Da.Club.Vocal
º ©º ch ÿÿ

Now, if I were to change it to this:

” getlo.mid
º ©º ch ÿÿ

Would it be screwed up??

I already broke my phone, and don't want to do it again to the new one...can ANYONE help me??plz??

p.s.the "getlo.mid" is a ringtone i constructed from an mp3, and the "In.Da.Club.Vocal" is a ringtone I downloaded from Telus...
