P900 from PALM OS?

Has anyone here previously used PALM OS and switched to the P900 and the Symbian OS? I am currently trying a P900 out and I am not 100% sure yet that switching from the PALM OS is the best idea, since a lot of software I am used to using is not available for Symbian and it's something new to have to get used to.
I am hoping some of you can shed some light on how you made the switch from PALM OS and how well or not well it has been for you. Also, what software(s) have you bought to enhance your P900 to try to get the Symbian OS as close to what you had experienced before with your old PALM OS unit. Also, do you think it has been worth the switch? If so, please explain.

Thanks a lot!

I have been a Palm user ever siunce they came out with the original Palm Pilot and have accumulated a huge collection of apps that I have grown accustomed to.

I just got my P900 a few weeks ago and am very happy with that. I still have my T3 but haven't brought it to work since I got the P900. Sure, I miss all kinds of apps from the Palm but I figure as time goes I'll adjust and also more apps will (hopefully although it seems like Series 60 is getting more apps than UIQ) appear.

Most of the productivity/organizer apps are adequately on the P900. Other miscellaneous ones are the ones I miss: HandyShopper, some baby apps (keeping track of baby stuff)

What I miss most from the T3 is the (much) bigger screen. eBook reading, web browsing and document editing were really great on the 480x320 screen.

Anyways, I am still in the getting used to it phase (happily so) but I don't think it is gonna be a big deal to shed the Palm eventually.

I LOVED the P800, but I am just too entrenched in Palm

F***CK PALM OS - SYMBIAN KICKS A***S

I'm like haritia. I've been a Palm user since the original Palm Pilot.

I absolutely LOVE my P900 but I would prefer a full size (larger screen) Palm PDA if the PDA features are critical to you on a daily basis. The number of Palm applications available compared to Symbian is no contest.

I have no complaints with Symbian but I do with the sync software as I'm a power Outlook user (syncing with the P900 is slow and is very problematic. I need to occasionally force sync the phone (re-write the phone) because it's not properly updating during the sync).

The trade-offs are worth it because to have the phone and PDA together in one package is a huge benefit (to me).

When I did my research before my P900 purchase, I got the sense most people describe the P900 as "more phone / less PDA" and people describe the Treo 600 as "more PDA / less phone". The comment is probably related to Symbian vs Palm OS applications available?

I'll "ditto" mattias. Big compromise from the Palm OS. Personally, if they'd've used the PalmOS with the otherwise well-thought-out design of the phone, I'd be in heaven.

Sync'ing works but is very limited. As someone who uses Outlook Notes -- which sync to Jotter in the P900 -- I find that pathetic. Entries are sorted by date and can't be resorted. Impossible to find anything. (There are awkward 3rd party alternatives.)

But, as has been said, if you're willing to live with the shortcomings of Sony's implementation of the OS -- it's one heckuva phone.

Hi,

I'm on the same boat as you, and i'm actually getting a P900 tomorrow if the price is right. I still plan to keep my Palm (UX 50) since I'm used to a lot of appliaction from Palm OS such as dictionaries, Splash products, Agendus (which is okay since P900's got it too, although less functions), photography log and misc. But the combination of both PDA and phone is a plus for me since I don't bring it everyday with me.

Sometimes things just pop up my mind, so it would be nice to have the ability to note down what I have to do occasionally, in this sense, P900 is much nicer option for me since it has much better organizer function than those phones with limited PIM functions.

I own Treo 600 too, it's nice, but it's just butt ugly, and it's akward to use it (like you said, more PDA than a phone). I'm just looking for a phone with a better PIM function then the most phone. But I did benefit a lot from Treo 600 though. I'd say keep your Palm just for organizer functions.

I on the other hand am totally entrenched in the Palm OS. Its more mature and stable than the Symbain..even though the majority will disagree with me on that one. I've used the P800 and then the P900..and it just didnt cut it for me. They're great multimedia devices...but poor PDA for power users. Syncing to Outlook is very very important to me..and the Treo 600 with the default apps syncs just perfectly, and with Beyond Contacts its even better..and not to mention the ability to save/edit/create MS Office docs (natively too). These benefits far outweigh any need for a 65K color screen, Bluetooth etc.

I find it really great to use, has shortcuts for everything..anything can be accessed using the D-pad and dosent require the stylus to input data. The "Favorites" screen is just great..as I can program apps, numbers and bookmarks for quick access. Everything has been designed to use the D-pad. Retrieving and typing emails are a breeze with the keypad. I dont quite care for the looks, as long as it does its required job well.

Yup, it is a dilema, I read on Brighthand that SOny release a UX-50 with a GSM radio....how cool would that be???

I have used a lot of PDA's. The Palm experience is quite good, but the better handsets have gotten over the last year, the less I started using a PDA.

So, I kind of like the P900 way of doing things, and I love the Symbian OS for a lot of reasons. Palm OS 5 will bring some improvements to the platform but if I waited for what was coming out later I'd still be using my old Audiovox Analog Überfone!

It will be the ultimate dream come true, IF it is Palm OS. May god answer my prayers and make SE switch to Palm. Amen

we'll have to wait and see, I see neither of us are much for waiting either as I have the latest Treo and you have the latest Px00
