modeled after the Series 60 forum...this thread is devoted to recommend apps for your bb.

Please post what bb you have, and well the program of course, and what you think

NO APP WAREZ POSTING AND SUCH

the goal of this thread is for new users like me...im aout to join the bb family, and well i want to see what are some good apps, and what people think of it..

cheers all and have fun

Great idea hofo_mofo; here's a start.

Although there aren't many games for the BlackBerry, Magmic (http://www.magmic.com) has several that are excellent. All are available for over the air (OTA) downloads and you can run play them 10 times before having to purchase them. I played Hearts for over an hour yesterday on a long flight.

RIM also created a neat web site called the DemoPortal - it is located at http://www.blackberry.com/demoportal which has a version of FreeCell on it.

I used the BlackBerry browser on a BES with MDS enabled; you will either need that or the Reqwireless browser (another recommendation) to retrieve the games. I am not sure if the standard WAP browser with the RBRO hack (search for RBRO for more information) will work.

If you have a Verizon BlackBerry without a BES/MDS, you are out of luck.

thanks NJBlackBerry

I will soon be a 7280 owner...hopefully...and i was browsing handango.com and well these apps came to mind...

your views on these programs would be great

Webviewer (19.99 USD)
EmailViewer (19.99 USD)
eOffice Standard Edition (149.99 USD) --> which if im not mistaken is eWord (59.95 USD), eCell (74.95 USD), and eFile (FREE), in one package
Webmessenger (48.00 USD)

I just put the prices so you guys could see..

but yeah any of you guys own these progs and what do you think of these?

Posted by: HCTech

I'm kinda partial to the streaming stock quote applications MidCast and MidCast Pro from HillCast.!

Posted by: DocGo

Hi, I am using eOffice (standard version) and it is an impressive program. Of course, it can't compare with the Documents To Go program available for Palm OS but having the ability to create/edit/send Word and Excel files from your BB is great! I tried to send an eWord file I created with my BB to my work email as an attachment...you can open it directly in your PC using MS Word. Totally awesome. I also use emailViewer (to view emails with jpg files) as well as webviewer. All of these programs make my BB much more efficient and useful.

Posted by: hofo_mofo

thank you DocGo...i was hoping that would be the answer

Posted by: NJBlackBerry

How could we forget ringtones! OK, so they are mono and the BlackBerry doesn't handle ringtones particularly well...

Here's a whole pile of them:

Ah, I see that you just got a 7280 and it's now your Primary phone. How are you liking it so far?

Posted by: hofo_mofo

i just won it on ebay today...it will be shipped to my house in ottawa...i made the changes to my profile already...but i've played with RO's 7280 and man this thing is sick!

Favourite Blackberry software at the moment.

www.webmessenger.com -- AIM/ICQ/MSN/Yahoo
www.idokorro.com -- Telnet/SSH

Both has trial versions.... The Idokorro stuff is pretty expensive, but there is a trial that allows up to 20 connections. I'm planning to register soon though, since I need it for my home based Linux box. One can leave themselves connected to their Linux box 24 hours a day, to prolong the 20-connection trial, if not connecting to other hosts at the time.

Which is better though -- Reqwireless webviewer, or Blackberry Web Client in HTML mode (not WAP)?

Posted by: El Chino

mark.. which webmessenger should i download for my 7280?

Posted by: Mark Rejhon

I'm going to link to a popular thread in this sticky:

The Hoested BES/MDS Thread:
How to get Chat/AIM/ICQ/MSN/Yahoo!/HTML/telnet/SSH on your Blackberry without buying BES

Posted by: Mark Rejhon

Hi,

Found a free ICQ program for Blackberry called BlackChat:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...threadid=378182

It is on SourceForge at Project BlackChat

Posted by: smay

I have a 7510 running on TELUS Mobility's iden network. Fantastic!
I am running METAmessage basic, including spellcheck, advanced attachment viewing, and fax-printing. $7 canadian/month. This is an excellent product. Every BB on a BES should have this.
I am also running a demo version of Flowfinity forms, which is an excellent way to gather information simply with your BB and funnel back to a central database wirelessly.

ExpenseLog Pro is great... you can keep track of all your expenses and separate them into different (default or user-defined) accounts, categories, etc on your BB, and sync with an online portal where you can view, archive, manipulate or even export expense data.

Plan to try out MileageTracker too, which may be useful for companies with mobile reps who are using their own vehicle (and tracking mileage). Can even set $ value per km for reimbursement. Similar idea to ExpenseLog Pro, but for Mileage, not $'s.

Can anyone recommend a good place to download applications/games etc for RIM7280?

Posted by: aknight

I was missing the numeric paging from my 950 days..........until I found http://www.numericpage.com/

US$20/year and they send a SMS message to your Blackberry (or any phone for that matter)

Takes a little practice to get the right amount of pause built in, but it can be done and works well.

I've been playing with some of the programs from Terratial Technologies (happen to work in the T-Mobile corporate store downstairs from their offices in Atlanta), and thought I'd throw them up here as a recommendation. They've got two programs I've seen so far (both image related), ScreenEngager and BBImageViewer. Cheap and useful, especially if you want to view/attach images with email... I've heard they're working on a traffic cam setup using the ScreenEngager stuff as well (I believe it currently only works in Atlanta).

Jay,

I've noticed their site and am interested, potentially, in both products. Still trying to order a Verizon 7750. Perhaps you could answer my question - I think I 've read that with a BB you can't read graphs or other images in word documents. Could you do that w/Terratial image viewer? I read that you can see jpeg and another format on their site, but I don't know enough about computers to know how that translates to imbedded images in word documents. Thanks for your help.

Pam

Posted by: jay_smith

Pam,

I'll check on this for you on Monday and see what what they say!

The answer is no. Terratial only displays gif images that are the exact size required for your BB screen. They must be sent by e-mail and can't be embedded into another document.

I suppose you could get people to size the charts down to the right size and e-mail them to you, though.... good luck with that

Posted by: prf

Thanks. Is there a way to view images or graphs imbedded in word documents on a 7750 using BWC? I'd like to view all objects included in email or documents (photos, drawings, graphs, etc.) I plan to purchase eoffice when my BB arrives next week, so not sure if I'm covered. I'm confused by all these options - the terratial image viewer seems to do the same thing reqwireless email viewer says it does. What are my options and differences? Also, any concerns about security when all these solutions seem to require that you send your document through their servers? Thanks again.

Pam,

Not sure if you got the answers you needed, but I think the difference between Terratial and Reqwireless is that Terratial is offering a device based client that reads the images locally and instantly -- although they have to be formatted and named in a special manner. Reqwireless, I believe, is a server based solution, so the email resides on their server and is essentially viewed as a web-page, and takes time to download, like a web-page. So, Terratial should pose no security risk -- Reqwireless might. Terratial is fast, Reqwireless not so fast.

Neither is perfect. I'm not sure what eoffice does -- it might work. I also remember reading somewhere that METAMessage offers a good solution. They offer an enterprise license or an ASP type fee arrangement -- again, a server based solution, so slow and less secure, but I have heard good things about them (I believe they are at onsetinc.com or metamessage.com). I had terbbile trouble getting the METAmessage to work on my device, but that's because I had very little memory remaining, and it is a BIG application.

Didn't mean to ramble on...just my $0.02.

Posted by: prf

Kirson, thanks for the reply. I ended up getting both - but have a memory problem (my verizon 7750 now only has 1.6mb free). Email viewer (and web viewer) does let me see most images attached to an email sent to my pop3 account. Not bad - I need an extra step to see the image (click get full image) rather than have the image show up on the initial email (or web page) view.

re: terratial - they also have an option where you can download your own photos - $30, unlimited photos (but only 5 at a time can be displayed). I'm still trying to reformat my photos so they look as nice as theirs did on the trial version. Difference b/n the reqwireless and terratial photo view is that the terratial photos are formatted to take up the bb's whole screen.

I have to say that the support at both companies has been phenomenal. I'm pleased with both products.

thanks everyone for the replies.

Related to apps on a Blackberry.

Over-The-Air Software Download to Blackberry

Now I was able to test two separate IRC clients (WLIrc and VIRCA). It appears VIRCA is the better IRC chat client of the two for the Blackberry.

There are lots of great games for the BlackBerry at www.magmic.com.

There are several good card games, fishing, bowling etc. I wouldn't bother downloading Alien Lander though, I couldn't figure it out. Most games are free to play 10 times.

Thanks for the link, so I have a quick question, I downloaded the texas hold em, it's seems like the score (aka my money) is all fudged up and I can't tell what I have, is this a common problem or not.

Posted by: jeffbacon

Texas Hold'em did not support the 7100 until Fri. If you download from bb.magmic.com again the issue should be fixed.

Looks like this link is down. Does anyone have any other places to d/l ringtones for the BB?

Hi all,

I can strongly recommend BerryVine Messenger for anyone who wants to use MSN. I was involved in the beta testing and have been using it for some time now on a 7100v and a 7230. A great application, especially when your contact list is not too long.

This IM client doesn't require 3rd party involvement, you can login using your passport right away and there is no periodical costs. The only downside is that it doesn't support the webclient (you require MDS or MDG), but I have been told that that will follow soon.

check it out:

To prf,

Re: Terratial's Screen Engager Dynamic, I am also new to the BB (7100t through T-mobile) and I am considering this software. Are you or anyone else on this thread aware if this will still work given T-mobile's port 80 assault, er, troubles?

Thanks in advance.

Evening all:

I just noticed that a version of the old text game Zork is available for old-school Blackberries; does anyone know of any versions of these old text adventures are on the horizon from any developers? Ones that could function on modern-day BBs? I realize I'm talking about a relatively small percentage of users who'd actually buy said games, but I'd definitely pay money for working versions of my beloved old text adventures to carry around on my BB.

Is there a free trial version for this software?? or is it something i have to buy and hope I like?

Posted by: Birdman

Still looking for a ListPro and ewallet type solution (or those very programs ported to the BB) before I switch.

But now with the lawsuite settlement, I hope to see PPCs with BB conect software built in.

Posted by: Doo Dad

I visited the J2X website and it says the following in their FAQ's.

Not Supported
Bell Mobility (CA), Verizon, Sprint, Telus (Blackberry 7750)

All Blackberry 6750, 7250, 7550, 7750 are not supported.

Seems to me that CDMA is not supported. TELUSmobilityguy are you using these apps on Telus?

i have to agree with NJBLACKBERRY

Posted by: Jeffrc

got this link from my T-mobile rep, works with a bunch of diff blackberrys for many diff carriers( even for nextel!!!)
here is the basic info:
AskMeNow is a revolutionary new service that can answer any question you have, anywhere, anytime. Use your cell phone or BlackBerry® handheld to ask a question—through e-mail or a simple phone call—and the answer is promptly sent back to your handheld device via text message or e-mail. You can use it to manage your time and effort efficiently. Tend to other tasks and avoid the headaches of Internet search engines or waiting on hold for an operator while AskMeNow finds the information you need.
More info here

link for most blackberry providers ( im assuming its over the air, ie the OTA in the link...)

link for nextel/telus users (you need to save it to your desktop and use the app loader to get it on)

its pretty cool, more of a novelty kinda thing or if u dont want to search through the menus for info ( ie if u put in "what will the weather be in xxxxxx on such and such a date?", it will email you back the weather report.

While the program is pretty cool, and I would even dare to say that its worth the $20.00, they should probably mention that it doesn't look up cell numbers.

While I know that it doesn't, the average joe might be thinking that it does.

Aside from that, I think it's a pretty cool program. So far it works pretty well.
