Yeah, it's an ERI banner - it actually changes depending on what network you're on (Native, Extended, or Roam). I think if you could load it with non-ERI PRL that that would do the trick... but how? Maybe a store would be willing to do so... I know you can't OTA. You'd probably have to have the store load a new PRL everytime...

I used bitpim and my data cable to edit the appropriate file. You can find instructions here. One thing to note: only remove the "Verizon Wireless" text, just replace it with spaces. There are three characters before the text that show up as periods in an editor. When I removed those the first time, my phone fired up with the roaming indicator on.

When I first changed the string, I spaced over everything between @ and A and got the roaming indicator. I went back and only spaced over the Verizon text, leaving the few periods after the @ and it worked fine. My final string looks something like this (but there are bunch of spaces that won't all show up)...

@... A

Hopefully you still have the original file backed up somewhere, because I don't think you can just add the periods as they actually represent some other hex characters or whatnot.

Just space over the Verizon text and leave everything else.

I found a real easy way to take the "Verizon Wireless" off of the screen. When I did my *228 update and the phone rebooted, it was gone!

I just did the firmware update and it was back. I again did *228 and it's gone again.

Since then (a few hours after the update) I was downloading a game and the phone froze up. Now I can't use the phone at all. I would imagin this has more to do with the firmware upgrade then anything. And yes I took the battery off and put it back on, but I still can't use the phone.
