Finally, New Animated Screen Saver On 8900

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Maybe I'm stupid or the last one to figure it out but I was sick and tired of the only animated screen saver on the 8900 being that stupid girly flower blowing magic pollen in the air. This phone was really made for a girl.
I tried sending myself an animated aquarium gif a few months back but it didn’t recognize the format.
I accidentally found a forum which said that the 8900 used .SAF extension on its screensaver not .GIF . SAF stands for simple animation format.
After spending a whole day trying to find SAF animated files or an APP which would create or edit SAF files, I gave up.
This morning though I had a brain storm. Why not just try to change the .GIF extension on my old aquarium gif to .SAF .
I did and sent it to myself through my email. Just attached it to my message (myphonenumber@vzwpix.com). When you recieve it just "save file to media".
Then go through your menu. I think its Left soft key-7-2-2, and select the file under downloads.
Lo and behold.... a new animated background screensaver. WOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
Try it guys and please post some links to nice free cell phone animated GIF websites for all of us to use.

Thanks

what size do the pictures have to be?

thanks.

Also does anyone know if you can send multiple images in 1 message or multi ringtones. I have some video game mids and they are 10 k, would be awesome to send 10 songs in 1 message, save me some $$

thanks

I have tried your .SAF trick but it has not worked... I have tried a 39k file, a 6k file.. nada. I am able to do ringtones, jpgs and animated gifs.

Hmm, .saf - I never heard of this extension type before. Can anyone shed some light here?

Yes you certainly are!

Maybe I'm the idiot. Just to clarify, we are talking about animated "moving" gif files. Not your standard picture gif that just as plain as a jpeg. I know that jpegs work fine on the phone.
The one or two times I tried sending myself animated gifs they didn't work. Thats why I was researching the .saf stuff.
If some of you guys are able to get gifs to "move" on your phone as a standard feature then maybe I was doing something wrong.
Again, the only reason to rename the extension to .saf instead of .gif is only if you cant get the phone to recognize the .gif standard and the gif doesnt load or loads and doesnt move.

Just curious dhl, if your able to get animated gif's to work, why are you bothering with the saf extention?
Thanks

The animated .gifs drop frames when playing back from the media "gellary", but the whole animation is played when viewing it from the original pix message. I was trying the .saf method to see if it fixed that problem.

I don't need to rename anything to .saf it works fine as .gif

But the issue I have is the same as DHL

The animation drops frames

I still want to know the exact specs to make the animation work perfectly

It looks like 2 fps to me but how many frames will the phone take total?

Posted by: sevenwords

yes that would help. this looks like crap on my phone.

Posted by: neomuzic

yup, looks crappy to me also

I see less than half of the movement

Any movement around the time (if using it as your background) the color gets messed up
