Yeah, I look forward to it too, but could someone explain what the difference is between the 8200 and the 5500--except more colors. are these not just two almost identical models?

Posted by: lgreenberg

I like it.

I might have to pick one up.

The main difference I see is no video mail.

Posted by: ray1b

The keys on the 8200 are green.

Posted by: largirl

In addition to the lack of video and green keys, the camera is also on the front of the clamshell.

Posted by: sneak16

The 8200 also claims to have an alarm clock. Hold your breath. . ..

Posted by: Supratik

Won't be long now...

Would it be to much to hope for more than 8-- one touch keys?

Good call. Hopefully they've fixed the few bugs that have plagued the 5500 as well. The 8200 is also supposed to have better reception than any other Sanyo (should be stellar).

Posted by: Supratik

Yeah, I can't wait - I'm holding onto my defective A460 and I quality for the 150.00 mail-in-rebate - just waiting on the release of this phone, hope its soon.

Posted by: CoreyTheGent

Green keys? Is this just going to be a cheaper 5500? I don't see what's so special about this phone, unless what jimmy mentioned is still standing in the end. Will this phone even have a different interface, or another recycled version of the old one? Give me a better earpiece, faster Vision, new guts and I'm all for it.

Posted by: vytal

Since when was the 5500 plagued? I could've swarn a lot more of them sold than your beloved vm4050.

Anyway, It'd be awesome of they had a new interface but thats doubtful as this is going to be a more value oriented phone.

Posted by: Corey140

When is Sanyo 8200 expected to be released? I'm ready for a new phone, I might have to wait for this one if it can slip between $250 and $325 before rebate.

Posted by: Supratik

Woah, this phone retails for 325?

But yeah, I qualify for the 150.00 mail in, so I'm just awaiting this phone...

Release! Release! Release!

Posted by: Supratik

Oh, I misread.

Yeah, it'll most likely be within that price range.

Posted by: jimmyjames

The 8200 is $279.99

Posted by: Supratik

Wow, that's better than I expected.

Posted by: BlitzKrieg

Is it available now?

Posted by: adamlee2001GXE

From what I am able to gather from the pictures on sanyo's site, it looks as if the Sanyo has been listening to us.

Things I liked from my 4900 was the speakerphone, and clear call quality, none of this garbled, muffled, distorted, still sounds like crap at level 4 volume 8100 BS.

5150 had nice completely lit keys, none of this barely lit just the numbers crap.

8100 has nicer screen, but slumps in all other aspects of the phone. Hopefully they have rounded up these features and packed em in the 8200 as it appears. If so, this phone will be one that I will keep for a while.

Posted by: Supratik

BlitzKrieg: Nobody seems to know when it'll be available; I've heard things from next week to end of May.

We'll just have to wait and see.

Sprint rep said that it should be more than 2 weeks (on the phone), but I always take Sprint reps with a grain of salt.

Pad Thai time!

Posted by: jimmyjames

The 8200 is available now. Just call telesales. The silver is in stock now and the blue and red are available tomorrow.

Posted by: Supratik

jj, that's great news - which number did you use? Sprint has like 4 different telesales numbers (i.e. the T608 one, etc).

Also, how does the return policy work through telesales? I know you have like... 7 days (14 days?) to return/exchange a phone to a sprint store if you are unsatisfied with it.

I doubt I'll be unsatisfied but you never know.

Posted by: jimmyjames

Any of the numbers should work for you. 14 days to return. Some stores will take them as a return, while others won't. You can also just call telesales back and they will send out a pre-paid 2-day UPS return envelope to drop the phone into. Very easy, but you get your credit faster if you return to a store.

Posted by: Supratik

Haha, I guess it was foolish of me to think that telesales would be open now - oh well, I'll call them first thing tomorrow.

Posted by: Supratik

Wah! As of 9:45 AM 4/12/04, telesales (888-253-1315) says that the PM8200 is "not available from Sprint yet."

Hopefully soon, then.

Posted by: jimmyjames

The 866 number said that the silver was available yesterday for regular ordering (no paper tickets) and that the blue and red ones would be available today. Give that one a try.

Posted by: Eldentistfuturo

what numder is that?

Posted by: Supratik

UPDATE: General telesales now officially acknowledges the existence of the red, blue, and silver PM8200 - just ordered mine, and should be here in 2-3 days. No 150.00 rebate though since its a brand new phone but if the phone meets all criteria then by all means its worth it.

EDIT:

Okay, this is ridiculous. Initially I had called and ordered with a different billing address, and they weren't sure if they could ship to an address other than the billing address. This time they said that the phone DID NOT qualify for the handset upgrade program.

Later they called and said I'd need to order differently, so I borrowed a roommate's credit card, and casually asked again... This time they said "Why, of course it qualifies, the rebate will be sent with the phone."

If you guys are doing the handset upgrade program, be SURE you specify otherwise they'll forget to give it.

will the screen on the 8200 be improved from the 8100. The samsung a620 has a way better screen than the 8100, so will the 8200 be comparable?

Posted by: ScrapMaker

hrm, so uh, whats so good about this phone... compared to a 4500 or 4050? Seems like the same price range.

Posted by: ScrapMaker

hrm, even has worse talk time on the battery... I guess its supposed to be a "value" 5500....

The best thing Sanyo has ever done is put the camera on the back like that... No one that looks at my phone notices that I have a camera, which makes it more fun. Maybe since its dark blue that helps too...

Posted by: CoreyTheGent

I don't get why Sanyo would put a better speakerphone in the 8200, because it will just be a cheaper 5500. Basically to the 5300 what the 8100 was. So far I'm not all that impressed, but I'll wait for the reviews.

Posted by: Supratik

You guys all raise valid points, but one of the reasons I didn't go for the VM4500 was because I didn't want to pay so much extra for video - it's not something I needed.

The 8200 was well within my price-range for a phone, looks nice, has speakerphone (and as an added benefit, a camera as well), is supposed to have superior reception and superior battery life (over the 8100 anyway), and basically newer technology.

I just needed to upgrade, and this seemed to fit my needs the best.

Posted by: CoreyTheGent

Who says it has newer technology? When compared to the 8100?

If the 8200 has a completely re-designed interface and faster Vision, I'll gladly get it. But if it's just a cheap 5500 and the earpiece isn't even more clear, then it's not worth it for me.

For all those deciding between the 8200 and 4500, needing a less expensive phone, it will be a good option.

Posted by: tuolumne

Posted by: jimmyjames

The A620 has a weak screen. The 8200 will hopefully be much better. When's Samsung going to put a screen with decent resolution on one of their phones? The new A680 is weak as well.

The 5500 has had way too many returns and bugs to be considered by many people. Let's hope that the 8200 is different.

You think that the A620 has a weak screen? For your information, samsung puts ×××× near the best resolution screens in their phones (behind the 4050 of course). Don't you even try to stick your weak Samsung grudge in my face. You think that the A680 has a Weak screen..if you compare it with the likes of a 4050, then it is no where near the resolution, but it is in no means weak. If you are going to be calling any screen weak, call it the 8100. You have nothing better to do then call the phones that you have the best. Get a life.

Posted by: jimmyjames

Um, I'm hoping that English is your fifth language. Yikes!

Check those resolution numbers again, genius.

Posted by: tuolumne

check what numbers. I don't really give a ×××× what the numbers are. The 8100's screen looks like S*it compared to samsung screens. Don't even TRY to attempt to say that it is in some bias world that it isn't.

Now all that I asked is if the 8200's screen will be an improvement over the 8100's, and if it is better than the 8100 , will it be equal to or even better than the A620's screen. Geeze

btw, english is my FIRST language, so I hope that that makes you happy

Three words: Hooked On Phonics

Learn it. Know it. Live it.

Posted by: tuolumne

you make no ××××ing sense what so ever. OH I forgot that is how you always act around here

You have nothing to do other than priase yourself with other user names that you have to start forums that say "look Jimmy saved me from buying a 5500!!", or "Jimmy was rite!" Get a ××××ing life. I mean COME ON!

Posted by: Supratik

jj might be ever so slightly hooked on the 4050, but I have found through my own independent trials and research that his opinions are generally very solid and I value them greatly.

For example, YES, the Toshiba earpiece is better than the 4500 (but I liked the 4500's too and didn't find it muddy).

My family has owned Samsungs all their life, and my friends' Sanyos screens (to me) have looked brighter and sharper.

As said, these are all opinions and what matters most is how each phone affects each individual. While its true that technical specifications play the final word in these things, individual opinions is what these forums are all about.

Posted by: tuolumne

nevertheless, the 8100's screen is a little brighter than the A620's, but it doesn't look any where as sharp. I believe that this is because the 8100 is a much older phone/screen than the A620.

Go to the store and pick whichever one YOU believe suits you best

Posted by: Supratik

Um. That's what I've been saying. I'm picking the phone that suits me best. There's no need to be rude.

Corey: Sorry, I phrased that wrong. This phone does use existing technology (most likely), but when I said new I meant that it was the first phone of Sanyo's to incorporate various features into the type of phone that it is (cheaper VM4500, both camera and speakerphone, etc).

In terms of actual "new" technology I think the only thing it does that other Sprint phones don't is FOA (Firmware Over the Air).

do all of your family members own an a460? Yeah, by that standpoint the Sanyo's screen is much better, ITS COLOR!!!

But I have to say that Samsungs screens are much better than Sanyos, and no I'm not saying this JUST becasue I have one.

Posted by: Supratik

Then exactly why are you saying that? It's obviously your opinion unless you've got technical specifications to back you up. We understand that you feel Samsung screens "look" better, I'm just saying that from my experience thus far, I have found in general that some of Sanyo's new offerings have better screens then some of Samsung's new offerings IN MY OPINION. Give it a rest already.

My father has a Samsung A600 I believe, or something to that extent, it's the 600 model right before the swiveling screen model. I've seen others of Samsung's offerings at the Sprint store and the phones were nice, but I wanted to try Sanyo since my friends all seem to like it, and I've heard from forums that they have better reception, etc than the Samsungs.

Once again, in case you get offended, these are simply my opinions and justifications for having bought an 8200. It is the best phone for me at this time.

EDIT: Okay, there's your technical specifications backup in sneak's post following this one. However, from what I have seen from personal experience and at the sprint store, I still prefer the Sanyo screens at this time. Once again, this is merely my opinion.

Posted by: sneak16

Okay guys, this is getting ridiculous. Sanyos use LCDs, Samsungs use TFTs. TFTs are vastly superior to LCDs. I love my Sanyo, but the display sucks compared to my old a500.

Regarding JJ, he is a bullheaded individual. That being said, his insights are usually correct and informative. I just wish he didn't bash every other phone, but I agree mostly about the 4050 being a good phone.

Posted by: tuolumne

thank you sneak

Hey, like I said, I love my 8100, but there are a couple of things that annoy me about it, and it's gotten to the point that since I want a new phone, I'm gonna get the a680. Sanyo's are just too big. Great phones, but have faults. Just trying to say it like it is

Posted by: lgreenberg

I suggest to everyone that the flamming end now.

Keep to the topic not personal attacks.

Wrong. TFTs are LCDs. They both use TFT LCDs.

Man, after I said I agreed with you!! Okay, I was wrong, misinformed by my Sprint rep some time ago.. anyway, thanks JJ for the info.

Posted by: ScrapMaker

this is hilarious... as well as stupid...

that lcd remark made me shoot coke(cola) out my nose... But by Jimmy's post I recovered...

So is the 8100 TFT as well, or STN? the samsungs are TFT too?

what is the 4050?

Anyone know if you can request a different phone when you lose your old one with lockline? I bet sanyo will come out with a new flagship phone in a few months.... or maybe toshiba...

Sanyo8100 vs sanyo 8200 vs Sanyo 5500/4500

Posted by: mandamay

I recently got the Sanyo 8200 after having many terrible 5500's...so far so good. It seems to be a great phone. New features that the 8100 didn't have include:
SMS
Flash
New Camera Frames
Multiple Camera Shots
New Color Tones
Ring Tones for Ready Link
Alarm Clock
Red Color....Not just red but it's metallic as is the blue

Some Downfalls:
Speaker not as loud
Signal not as strong (as 8100)

All in all though it is a great phone so far

Posted by: IDType1

I just added the 8200 for $79 as my 5th phone to my $100 plan. Now I'm having buyer remorse. No USB cable, No Data and signal not as strong? doh!

Some Downfalls:
Speaker not as loud
Signal not as strong (as 8100)

Posted by: buster1125

I just got my 8200 in today and it is a sweet phone. Although it doesn't feel as solid as the 5500. It still commands attention. It does have that familiar click when opening and closing the phone that Sanyo phones are famous for. The only differences though are that the 5500 is capable of recording video clips and the keys light up blue. The keypad on the 8200 is green, ut they are very bright and easily seen in the dark. The camera feature on the 8200 is much nicer than the 5500. I noticed that pictures taken with my 5500 had this yellowish hue to it. The 8200's pictures came out pretty true to color. Imean what do you expect with a Camra phone anyway. All in all a very solid phone.

Another thing that I have a complaint about is the Contact list. The contact names limit you to 16 characters with spaces. That can be very irritating when entering in names and finding out you have run out of room.

I have no complaints about this phone have had one dropped call because PCS service sucks where I work, but it's not the phones fault. The ringtone selection on the phone are terrible. Wish they had a better selection of integrated ring tones.

The only problem is that i dont know anyone with Readylink..its disturbing

Posted by: Rose4uKY

Couple questions I am due for an upgrade in June. I currently own the 4900 and love it. Good reception great battery life. I would like to have the 2 way SMS even though I don't text message that often. I want faster Vision and I think light up blue keys would be cool but I don't care about that it's how good the phone works that I am interested in. I don't really need a camera phone but I know it will be cool to have. I think I am wanting to go back to a flip phone so right now my choice is the 8200. If I decide not to go the flip route I am hoping by June the 4920 will be out and I will have to see how much difference it is to the 4900. I wont use ready link neither. I know the 4900 battery life is 4.5 hours and the 8200 is only 3. The 4920 there's not enough info on it yet since it's not out. Can someone tell me how much memory it has? I forget what my 4900 has but I know it's filled up with ringers and backgrounds and a couple games.

Everyone seems to love the 8200 so I am probably going to go with it. I want to go into a Sprint store and play with it. I kind of like the Blue one. Is the Vision pretty fast on this phone?

Thanks, Rose

Posted by: tamu911

I got mine about a week ago and love it. It is a little more flimsy than the other sanyo phones, and kinda small, but it works great. I like a phone that is a little more substantial cuz I break stuff easy, but this one is great. Good size, EXCELENT reception.

Problems: The speaker (not speakerphone, the earpiece one) gets very distorted at high volumns, and the batt life kinda blows, but I can cope with both of those. Readylink is great, and the camera is better than any other sprint one i've seen...IT'S A KEEPER!

Posted by: Rose4uKY

Thanks, I played with one today for a while at Radio Shack. I decided on the blue over the red. I know my 4900 has a 4.5 battery life and this one only has a 3.0 but I can live with that too. I will just charge my phone more often. I hardly ever charge my phone now and when I am in the car it's always on the charger. My 4900 charger will work for the 8200 I was told.

I am just mad I have to wait for June. I wont use Ready Link but will play around with the camera even though I don't need it hee hee. Thanks, Rose
