HH OS 3.7.0 vs 3.7.1 differences

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: malarky

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry7280/3.7.1 UP.Link/5.1.2.2)

This had been asked in the past but I've not seen sny resonses ... does anyone know what has been added/changed in 3.7.1? I wasn't able to locate release notes of any kind on the RIM site.

A few things which I've noticed:

- "Rogers Applications" ribbon bar entry disappeared.
- when you click on the jog dial when the screen is locked, you get two choices ... Unlock, and make an emerge call.
- you no longer get a preview of the fonts as you scroll through themm in Options.

I don't use the phone, but I understand the bigger changes were made iin that area.

Posted by: NJBlackBerry

As you mentioned, the major difference are in the phone:
- speed (one touch) dialing
- redesigned dialer interface
- boosted volume (at least on my 7230)

Posted by: bhmunroe

Do you know if this will work on a Rogers 6280?

thanks

Posted by: NJBlackBerry

No; but you can go to the same websites mentioned and download the Cingular 6280 code (not the 7280 code) and it will work fine

Posted by: bhmunroe

Just loaded on the 6280 software. Nice. Very Nice. I like the improvements for the calling.

I only use the 6280 now and rely on it for dialing, etc. What a nice improvement.

Go ahead and do it, man! I did it within 3 days of getting my new BB7280 and never regretted it.

Posted by: malarky

Yeah, go for it! You don't lose anything (except that wonderfully useful Rogers App if you're with Rogers Wireless).

Posted by: hofo_mofo

oops..what was that..im on rogers...it does what now?

Do you have an icon called something like "Rogers Applications" with a graphic of what looks like a SIM card?

When you apply the 3.7.1 upgrade, this will disappear. That's what I and some of the others have found.

It didn't do anything, so I'm not concerned. Not sure if there's any future intent, but if Rogers adds functionality to it at some point, I will upgrade/downgrade to a Rogers certified OS at that point.

You can always get it back by keeping an installer of the old OS (from the Rogers website) handy. I tested a downgrade back to 3.7.0 and re-upgrade to 3.7.1 with no problems after I did the initial 3.7.1 upgrade.

Posted by: malarky

Said icon is in the ribbon bar. I should have been more specific.

domo arigato mr roboto...thanks for the tips and clearing that up

3.7.0 vs 3.7.1.21

I must say I am disapointed at the changes RIM made to the OS. I can see how these changes are useful for new users, however anyone who has used Blackberry for an extended period will probably find some of these changes a major pain.

Pros:
1. One Touch Dial

Cons:
1. Removed shortcuts from home screen - m for messages, f for profiles **EDIT** You can turn the shortcuts on the homescreen back on by going into Phone-Options-General Options-Dial from Home Screen. Toggle it to no. Space bar still launches the phone application. Double space bar does nothing still.

2. Unable to search by name in the phone application with a single button push. (previously you could hit the phone button, type in fred and it would pull up all entries with fred. Now you have to click in and force to search by name.)

3. Once connected on a call you now see in a VERY LARGE FONT
Fred Smith
Mobile (999) 555-xxxx

Previously it would be:
Fred Smith
President
ABC Company
Mobile (999) 555-1212

4. Removed font preview.

5. Space bar from the home screen would bring up a blue screen that allowed a one time dial. Press it a second time and it would bring up your last dialed one time number. Now space bar will bring up the phone app. Press it a second time and nothing happens.

Posted by: hofo_mofo

i dont like that

Posted by: NJBlackBerry

Gentlemen - take a deep breath

2. Unable to search by name in the phone application with a single button push. (previously you could hit the phone button, type in fred and it would pull up all entries with fred. Now you have to click in and force to search by name.)

When you go into the phone dialer, they have split the screen. The top (above the line) is a pure dialer. Below the line is your most recently called list. From the MRU list, you can type in fred and see all entries for fred. Try it; it works.

4. Removed font preview.
Personally, I can live with that. I believe they added some fonts. I set a font and never change it. Never

5. Space bar from the home screen would bring up a blue screen that allowed a one time dial. Press it a second time and it would bring up your last dialed one time number. Now space bar will bring up the phone app. Press it a second time and nothing happens.

Pressing the space bar from the home screen does take you to the phone dialer. Above the line is the dialer and below the line shows you all of your previously made phone calls. I think this is an improvement.

To each his (or her) own. These are some of the first complaints I've heard about the 3.7.1 code. Fortunately, you can take a step backwards and downgrade easily!

2. Hard to do in the car. I wish they didn't add an extra step.

5. Pressing the phone button previously would have brought up your most recent calls also. I liked the space bar bringing up something different.

I'll keep it cause I like the speed dial. But I wish they would have left the name dial the way it was.

Posted by: NJBlackBerry

If I were you, I'd drive fron London to Waterloo and beat them until they changed it Of course, I have no idea how far that is (I am an ugly American)

I'm still not sure what you are trying to do that worked better before (I am not busting chops - I am trying to help).

Posted by: DarrenGuy

LOL.. it is only 2 hours away.

They space bar is minor. It would be nice if they would let u define the app that you could launch with the spacebar.

I used the dial by name often after pressing the phone button. I guess I will get use to it. Use the speed dial more.

Posted by: NJBlackBerry

Gotcha - guess I didn't use that feature enough to miss it!

Memo to RIM: some documentation with the new versions would be nice!

Posted by: DarrenGuy

Agreed: RIM... documentation would be nice.

Hi, my spacebar seems to be a little different from what everyone is describing.
Press the Space Bar once and I get the Phone menu. Press the Space Bar twice and I get the last number I dialed in big numbers on the dial line. And as NJBlackberry said, split screen below the dial line showing the last 5 caller's info that I dialed.

Tonight I got SIM Card Error on the line that usually says Rogers AT&T...had to do a reboot to get my phone working again.

Hmm, same thing happens on my Rogers 7280 with latest s/w. Hit space bar from main screen, goes to dial screen, hit space bar again and last # dialed appears on the screen.

The sim card error could be cause Rogers is updating everyones alpha tags from Rogers AT&T to Rogers now (mine has been changed recently).

Posted by: NJBlackBerry

When you got to Options / About, what version and platform numbers do you see?

Posted by: DarrenGuy

For reference I am running:
V3.7.1.21 (Platform 1.6.1.23)

Posted by: DocGo

Hmm, the newer upgrade version is out...3.7.1.37
I have the 3.7.1.21 and will try to upgrade later today to see what's new.

Posted by: gyozaman

Platform : 1.6.1.23
App Version : 3.7.1.21

Is there a newer App Version ?

Posted by: DarrenGuy

Update: I figured out to dial by name you can....

Press the phone button - cursor down into the names field (should be a single space) - then type in "fred" "abc company" etc.

This is much easier and faster then - click - search by name.

Posted by: DarrenGuy

Who has done the update to .1.37?

Posted by: NJBlackBerry

OK, even I am getting confused. When posting software versions, you have to also post which version of the BlackBerry you have

Good point, could get confusing fast.

Maybe we should all make sure the "Which Phone(s) do you use?" profile value includes the model and the sw version. Look to the left.

Posted by: DarrenGuy

Good idea malarky.

I think most of us are using 72xx series.

Posted by: NJBlackBerry

But I'm using the 7510 And the 7230 (but not at the same time, of course).

Ha ha, others can only dream of having problems like yours! If cell phones were cars, sounds like you'd have at least a 5 car heated underground garage in your home LOL.

So, if we go back to your earlier post:
"OK, even I am getting confused. When posting software versions, you have to also post which version of the BlackBerry you have ", we'll need to extend that just for you to say which BlackBerry version in your quiver are you using at this precise moment !

Posted by: bhmunroe

Probably a big mistake on my part.

When buying my 6280 - I was told the only diff between it and the 7280 was color. I really dont need color.

However I just looked at my buddies 7280 last night and realized the font styles and the way messages, etc are layed out are completely different. The main screen icons are smaller and you can readily see more of them.

I should have bought the 7280.

However.. does anyone know what the 7280 software will do on a 6280? would it work? Comments....

Posted by: NJBlackBerry

You can not load the 7280 software onto the 6280. The Application Loader simply will not allow it.

Posted by: hofo_mofo

really...but they run the same OS...3.7.x

Posted by: bhmunroe

Has anyone actually tried this?

wondering what is at risk if someone was the try doing this?

Posted by: DarrenGuy

I belive the platform versions are different. That is how the application loader knows it is a 72xx vs a 62xx. I will have to check Monday cause my 62xx are at the office.

Posted by: NJBlackBerry

I've tried this; many times. But feel free to try it - you can not damage the BlackBerry, because the incorrect code will not load for the wrong BlackBerry.

Check out Vendor.XML - notice there is a HardwareID field; every model BlackBerry must have a unique HardwareID - and the code must match the ID to load.

So, you can install the Nextel code for the 7510 onto your PC - check in Deskto Manager / Help / About / Hardheld Software to make sure it is installed, and it won't load on a 72xx. And the 7280 code from Cingular won't load on a 6280.

Like I said - I've tried it, and you can not load one version of the software onto another version of the BB.

Posted by: DarrenGuy

Have you ever thought how the GSM bands (850/900/1800/1900) are controlled. I think the 72xx series have the same internal guts and the bands are controlled by software. But I can't find anything solid on it.

Posted by: NJBlackBerry

I think there's more to it - but I don't know. If it was controlled by software, my 7230, running the Cingular 7280 code (since all the 72xxs run the same code) should pick up the 850 MHz band. And when I was in St. Croix a few weeks ago, it most certainly did not pick up 850 - neither did an AT&T 7210 running the 3.7.1 code. I don't know how the GSM frequencies are controlled...

How do you tell which band is being picked up. I'm probably picking up 850 at the office as I get 5 bars of seeg even when I'm on P2. I don't get anything on my trusty but aging V60.

Posted by: NJBlackBerry

You can not normally tell with a BlackBerry. The only way you can tell is if you are in a place with only one band (OVERSEAS MOSTLY); but in St. Croix I know Cingular just lit up a bunch of 850 MHz towers, with great coverage. I didn't get anything - no signal at all - on my 7230 while the Cingular 7280 guys sitting next to me had full signal. Ergo, I was not getting any signal on 850!

Posted by: glnz

I've had my BB 6230 for only three weeks, and I'm sorry I said "Yes" when Intellisync asked to upgrade me. In Calendar month view, I no longer see marks when a new appointment is short, a real drag. Please tell me how I can undo the upgrade and go back to 3.7.0. Now, I see v3.7.1.41 (platform 1.6.1.41). The Destop Manager has stayed the same at 3.6.0.54.) (Our IT administrator won't be upgrading the system to 4.0 for awhile, and I'"d like to go back until he does.) Thanks! glnz
