my laptop does not have a serial port, but does have a usb port. will a simple serial-usb hardware adapter work? are additional drivers required?

I know that with Palm PDA's additional drivers are needed to use the serial to usb adapter. I dont know if this is true with the phone but I'm pretty sure it should be.
