T310 not detected in Mobile Phone Monitor

just got a data cable for my T310 (it's the T28 data cable, works on the 68i, 310, 610, etc...)
i turn off comp, hook up the serial port to my mobo, turn on the comp, and plug the other end into my phone
i already have mobile phone monitor installed, but it's not detecting at all
any clues wtf is going on?
i had one before but i returned it, worked on the serial port, also had a usb one that worked fine
this one won't work at all though, any clues why?
any hints on what i can do?
