Mobile Phone Bug...Keeping up with the Jonses, chime in.

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

For about two years now, I have been buying just about every new phone coming out. The bug kept hitting me and I kept switching out phones every 2-3 weeks if that long. Now I have finally come to terms with myself. I used to be an addict but not anymore. So who here has been bitten by the bug?

Posted by: cy88

Me = bitten

2 ~ 3 weeks? Wow you are not that bad. Probably < 1 week for me

Posted by: superfire

I think I have been getting worst in last 6 months.

I joined TMO in 2002 and T68i was my first GSM phone.
It lasted for about 1 yr then I bought a T616 in last July. I bought a E715 something in Feb 2004, and then I just bought a z600 on Monday. I aslo ordered a Treo around end of Feb 2004 and be waiting for it to delivery (they almost did, but my cc screwed up).

Having no life besides of work, I save some $$ toward buying a phone.

I need a LIFE!!!!

eheheh

in fact, i am not bitten by the phone bugs, but when the new phones come out, they just look much better than my old one. hahah

i am getting worst....

I don't know whether I switch phones a lot or sometimes, but I usually buy a new phone every 6 months at the longest. But my E715, G50 and T610 were bought all within the past 6 months hehe .

Posted by: Trekker

I change my phone every 8-10 months

Posted by: The Rex

over the last three years, i'm averaging one every other month

Posted by: roamingcharge

The longest that I have used a phone since 1996 is the T610 that I've been using for 4 months now.

Posted by: mobilezen

In a couple hours, I will be switching after 2 months with my 6310i.

Posted by: AndyLHoang

I do not have the bug, mainly because I cannot afford switching phones every other month. But if I did have the money, I would definitely be switching and buying more phones more often.

Posted by: TriBand81

As you can tell from my siggy, I have bought a new phone every 6 months or so , right now I'm holding steady at 6 months since I bought the N-Gage in October '03 and my Moto V525 in January.

Posted by: mobilezen

patiently waiting...well sort of for the Sony Ericsson K700. <insert homer drool> I realized if I have two phones with me at all times, I'll be ok from my addiction so if I get bored, I can switch to the other one.... the beauty of sim cards. :laughs:

Posted by: shaolinmonk

I switch probably everyweek or so... but lately no mater what i switch to.. i end up with a t616 after all is said and done....

Posted by: GadgetVirtuoso

I'd switch all the time too if 1) they made enough phones I'd really want 2) I had the money for such things, especially at around $500 for most the phones I want.

Posted by: Bumpon10s

Ever since I bought my E715, I have been struck, i am currently looking for a few phones, and with my enhanced encome latley I will be getting a few good ones soon.

Posted by: Avon Lady

lol-am I the only one that has the same phone for 3 years?

Looks like you are the only one.

Posted by: librerongeur

i've managed to stay with my nokia 3595 for about 6 months now...

granted, its a secondary phone... and i want to replace it with a 3200.

My nextel, on the other hand, has been a i530 since (before) they offically came out... Since i like flips, and i like to beat the crap out of my work phone.

Posted by: simplyred

I did have a serious issue with buying phones...
But I solved it with getting two and switching it up whenever I felt like I needed a change, instead of purchasing another new one..
One I used for daytime [MPX200, for planning and to look more formal]
The other for fun [3100, rugged/simple/easy to use]

So I hope that might help some people with the phone bug...
Just have two at all times..
Sides if your battery dies, you have BACKUP!

Posted by: JDuarte

Can't stop asking my parents for phones!! look at my phone history on left...They were either given away or saved up for a new phone! I am currently looking for a new phone as well. Nokia is my favorite! I intend to buy soon (one's I want most listed in order) Nokia N-Gage, 3660, 3200, 3100, 6230(dream of owning), 3650, and of course the 3300. Help me in my own little "Help a 13year old own his dream phone" cause lol, but seriously....my birthday is coming up(09/13) so hello N-Gage, 3300, or 3660!

Posted by: JDuarte

Oh and I owned each phone about 3-4 weeks.

Posted by: chopper180

I used to have the bug, but recently the most important thing for me is THE PHONE HAS TO WORK! I spent a lot of money so I could have the "bling bling" phone, only to discover that nobody cared, and most were cheaply made and did not last. I know my i60 is old and plain, but it works. I really don't need ringtones/wallpaper/camera/toaster on a phone.

Posted by: The Rex

update: 23 phones in 32 months (about one every six weeks) since joining hofo in november 2001

Ericsson T39mc; Motorola V60g; Nokia 3390, 3650, 6100, 6600, 8290, 8390, 8890 (x3); O2 Xda II; Panasonic GD87; Samsung SGH-S300, SGH-E715; Sharp GX-32; Sony Ericsson P800, P900 (x2), T616, T68i, T68ie, Z600

Posted by: mobilezen

I had a P900 that I used for 3 months which was unbelieveably long since I used to swap out every couple weeks. Just sold the P900 and got a blue K700i. I love this phone. It's so smooth...now time to wait for the S710a to come out. I'm sure it'll be awhile so no worries. I figured if I switch phones every 4 months, that'll be perfect for when new gadgets come out.

Posted by: FallN

In the last 7 months I've had 6 phones.

I've finally calmed down a bit and settled on one phone at the moment, but it needs to be serviced so I'll be buying yet ANOTHER phone within the next few weeks.

I'm a recovering cell-phone-aholic.

Posted by: mobilezen

I've settled in on a Sony Ericsson K700i and an HP IPAQ RX3115...fun combination.

Posted by: sidneylopsides

I'm getting a new one every few months or so now, I just like them!
I keep all the old ones, I actually want a proper collection of SE phones, so if anyone is selling one I don't have, let me know!

Posted by: shaolinmonk

at least 2 a week...

tomorrow boys a p207 and z500a i hope.

Posted by: sidneylopsides

I thought you were retired?
If you don't keep it, can you sell me the Z500a?

I could use it.

Posted by: Yannerd

I honestly just keep changing my phones to keep the "capital value" of my phone... the way I see it, getting a couple hundred bucks back for an old phone, dumping in a small amount to get a newer, better phone is a pretty good deal. It beats holding the phone for a year and realizing that it's not worth anything

I only use Orange, they use 1800 here

Posted by: mobilezen

*sigh* next week I'm about to switch to another phone. This is such a vicious cycle.

Posted by: andy962

I'm amazed; I'm not at all bothered about the latest phone; just looking for the best deals

But I have a contract fetish; 2 have no rental; the rest have dealer cashbacks.

Just cancelled 2, so I'm looking for a new one in a couple of months - most likely candidate at the moment SonyEricsson K500i on Orange OVP Vodafone 200 - free phone, free rental

I'm hoping for my phone spending to drop into negative figures. Do I need therapy?

Posted by: sidneylopsides

Heh, I tend to have loads of contracts, had two T-Mob, two Orange and an O2 running at the same time
Now just one Orange and O2...

I was looking forward to a nice cheap payg dsl connection, but at the moment I seem to have unlimited dial-up internet for 1p per call; so I'm stuck

Nah, you just need hofo and you're good to go. I wish in the U.S. that phone deals were similiar if not same as the UK.

3 Orange, one on OVP Virgin
O2 paidupfrontforlife
T-mob 750 offpk

The other temptation is new T-mob 3000 min day landline & T-mob for £15 +vat (maybe I could go for MDA III on this, totally out of character)

How about refurb Mot A835 on 3pay for £4.99?

or contract A1000 on 3, 750 min, 150 text, free phone, annual rent £280?

That might get those switchers salivating

I've been bit by the mobile bug again...sometimes it hurts but after awhile you just get used to it and move on.

my friends get really annoyed when i show up with a different phone. it all started back with a T68m...then after that i've gone through so many SE phones...

t300
t310
t610
t630
p900
z500
k700

and now

s710a

my older brother however...

nokia 8290
nokia 8890
nokia 8390
nokia 6590
nokia 6800
nokia 6820b
nokia 6600
nokia 7610

and now

nokia 6230 - 6820b

for my sister...she's had one phone for like the past year...

nokia 3650 which is pretty girly since she has like 50 faceplates with hello kitty and what now that she changes to match whatever she is wearing -__-
she had one with bush's face on it when we are at the inaugartion....

my mother...

samsung e105
samsung e715

and now

samsung e315

my father

Motorola t720
Motorola v300
Motorola v600

and now

Motorola v551

I have a pretty cell phone oriented family...we go through phones like that but i think i'm actually going to hold onto my s710a. My brother has actually gone back to the 6820b which he says is good enough for him, he doesn't really need the camera, its just good to know you have one, but he likes the idea of the keyboard. my sister just likes to install programs on her 3650, my mom just likes to make calls, she likes sammys because they have big numbers, and my father just likes motorola...

we have alot of fights of which brand is better =X

Posted by: TriBand81

Wow, very impressive and ever-changing list

Posted by: andy962

As before, for me it is a contract fetish. 500 minutes + 100 text messages a month on 3 will cost £15.88 for the year. I can call about 100 countries and many of their mobiles from the included minutes, using Pre-dial. So I can put up with the unconventional-looking Nokia 7600. This deal is now available on NEC616

Alternative - 400 minutes a month @ £4.99 on Orange. Possible to call 170 countries and 100 mobiles using Simply-fone.

Posted by: mobilezen

I thought I was going to change phones soon but nothing is that tantalizing so I'm sticking with my P910a...Only thing that bugs me about it is the power light and bluetooth (blue) light.

Posted by: mobilezen

Wow, its been 4 months since I have looked at this thread... I am still using my P910a but I decided to sell it. The Nokia 6682 looks great and I'm just waiting for my Cingular store to get it in and that will probably be my phone for the next 8 months. I thought I was going to switch phones every 4 months but it is true what I wrote 4 months ago...no other phones are as tantilizing. I want a phone with PDA features, not a PDA with phone features. Sony Ericsson makes a great product but I guess it boils down to that I want something new.

I have just come into the SE world after a regretfull year with the RAZR V3. Great for the pocket but all bark and no bite. Anyways, I went with the S710a (great phone), then did the TREO 650 (big mistake) and then the NOKIA 6682, all in about 2 months (I know... its a disease). My beef with the 6682 is the camera door. Very flimsy and unless they figure something out as far as a replacement battery door w/out the slide I would not go back to it. Luckily I sold it after a day and got out from under a bad firmware problem. To MOBILEZEN I would suggest going into a store and playing with one b4 your buy it. I have been really impressed with my P910a and don't see another phone out there at the moment that compares. I would like to get my hands on a P990 but with no 3G capabilities in the US (at least in my area) I would hate to fork out the dough for a phone that I couldn't use to its potential.

Yeah I'm going to go search out an HP 6515 to play with. I sold my P910a cause I thought the P990 was going to have 850mhz/EDGE and thus value would drop but such device didn't come out. I shall (im)patiently wait for a good device...just don't know when that will be. I'm borrowing a phone at the moment and I feel so crippled haha.

I just got the GSM fever, being under verizon is horrible... no ability to switch phones T_T....

well, I think I am at the beginning of an addiction, that will last through college. Sucks to not have a job or be banked!

anyone here know where i can get a white w900i?

Posted by: mobilezen

I have realized one thing about switching phones. There are phones that (to me) are more novelty items such as the N80, K790 etc. Then there are phones that I can see using for awhile like my Z520 which I've had for a record breaking 9 months. Next phone on my list is the 8801...I believe I'll have this phone for a bit as long as it doesn't have any hiccups.

I can't believe I said this.... I had the phone for a day. It is not exactly the gadgeteer's type phone. I think I see a Nokia E50 in the distance but I think I'll hold on to the W810 cause it is by far the most solid phone I've used up to date...Last time I remember something like this was my Nokia 6310i.

Posted by: sidneylopsides

Heh, this thread is still going, though with some rather large gaps!
I've gone through the W900i, 6280, W810i, 903sh, N73 in the last few months and am now using the M600i and K800i.

Posted by: lordtrader

I change every year. Except this year, I got 2 phones. A 6270. Did not work the way I expected it to so I got an N80.

Posted by: captainmicahp

I have gone through 8 phoned in the last 3 and a half years. That is a lot more than most people but not a record setting pace. It is interesting to see how the people who posted here used to freak out about the t610. They have all moved on to either windows mobile or symbian devices, as have I. The last dumb phone I had was the k700. Now I cant go back to that kind of phone. I have an MDA now and am going to get an 8525 in the next week or so. If that phone proves to be the MDA with faster data, it may be my first year phone since the previous century.

Posted by: Deke218

Just to wake this up

Posted by: mobilezen

For the last year, I owned an SE W810 and a Z520 as personal phones. The phones that I have come across and played, tested, reviewed for outside sources include the TyTN, another Z520, Nokia 6630 for kicks (hey it was a freebie, why not haha), JasJam, RIZR, KRAZR, even a RAZR, V551 for work (at the time)...ah, the list goes on. I have had my W810 for about 9 months now and even with the quarks, its probably the best phone I have ever used. I need email capabilities though. I think the new Dash will be in my eyesight or even the Jaq4 from I-Mate but I'm not too fond of I-Mate toys even though Inventec designed/made it, not HTC.

Posted by: sendpaulmailat

Hmmm . . . I guess I have a variety of this affliction. I don't necessarily buy the latest thing, that would really bankrupt me. I do like to try out different phones, though, so I'll study one for a long time and worry over it until I'm sure it would be a good idea and then I get it on ebay. I tried a Treo 650 several years after its release and the same for a T-Mobile SDA and a Motorola A630. The two phones I've bought most recently are ones that actually have come out in the past 12 months: the Dash and the Pantech C3B (yes, I know the Pantech is just a slight modification of the C3 and C300, so maybe this one shouldn't count).

But here is my affliction: When I find a phone I really like, I buy a backup. That's how I ended up with several A630s (don't ask how many) and two Motorola V540s and two Pantechs. I am slowly letting go of the extras on ebay, but it is hard. Anyone need an A630? [Just kidding, moderators, I'm not really violating the forum rules because I'm not really offering it for sale. If I do that, it'll be on ebay.]

Posted by: sendpaulmailat

One additional comment about T-Mobile's delayed 3G . . . .

I have found I can live with a GPRS-only phone (A630 or Pantech). I really don't notice that much difference between them and my Edge-capable phones for email and simple WAP browsing. In that sense, the 3G delay has been a blessing: No need to limit my phone choices only to fast 3G-capable phones (or even phones with Edge). When T-Mo goes 3G, though, I can see my old phones being too outdated to put up with. I'm afraid it would be like giving up a cable Internet connection to go back to dial-up.
