8600 + DIC 8300 USB Cable... Help!!!

I'm wondering if anyone can help me out. I've recently purchased the DIC 8300 USB cable and have tried to use it with Bitpim or Gagin to add ringtones, etc. to my Vox 8600. After plugging in the phone to the USB port, my PC (XP Pro OS) fails to recognize the phone as a modem. Instead I get an "unknown device message." I have installed the 8600 drivers (moved them into my System32 folder) and that does not fix the problem. Neither Bitpim nor Gain recognize the phone. (Probably because it's not coming through on a COM Port). So, I'm stumped. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know how to correct it?
Thanks.

Not sure if this helps or not. I found this on another forum group that said they got it from here. So here it is, cut and paste:
Ok, a few people have been asking about this so here it is:
Requirements:
------------------
1) Audiovox 8600. The 8500 has a different mechanism for storing/indexing images/ringtones, I dont have the time to reverse-eng this. The 8900 I have no experience with.
2) Data-cable. Serial/USB, whatever works. Cables designed for older vox phones may work. e.g. vox 135 dic-1100 is what Im using.. (picked it up from ebay for a buck).
3) Gagin, and know how to use it. This can be found in some other threads (i think it was the verizon forum?). Do a search. Learn how to use it and be aware of the risks before proceeding any further. I'm not going to give a tutorial on it.. but one trick in getting it to work w/ the 8600 I've found is that I needed to lower the data speed on my phone to 115200.
4) Midi files. Thats what your ringtones are. Filename's must be a maximum length of 16 characters. Spaces are allowed. File extensions are optional.
5) Vox Index Editor. You need this to modify the index files which tell your phone what files (ringtones, screensavers) are available for use). I slapped this together in half an hour, so its not w/o shortcomings:
- I *think* the phone is capable of indexing a max of 20 ringtones, 20 images. I could be mistaken, but nonetheless the utility i wrote allows only 10 to be defined.
- When you save the index file, be sure to specify whether you're dealing w/ images or ringtones. Theres a radio button at the top to select this.
- bugs that i dont really care about.
6) Finally, I've only tested this on a Bell Mobility phone. These phones are brew/java disabled. The brew-enabled verizon phones may have different subdirectories for brew downloaded media. How this interacts w/ the other default download dirs im not too sure..
Instructions for Ringtones
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1) Dump midifiles into /user/sound/ringer
2) modify /db/download-snd.txt.
3) reset the phone
Instructions for Images
1) Dump images to /images
2) modify /db/download-img.txt
3) reset the phone
Also, I read in Gagin that the COM port has to be under 4.
"Your computer should recognize your phone as a USB modem. If you need to go look at your modem settings in the control panel and see what COM you’re on. If it’s higher then 4 you’ll need to move your phone to a lower COM Port, 3 or 4 is PRIMO".
I am new to all of this and haven't attempted it yet so I can't give you any practical answers. Hope this helps though.
Alright, I found the thread with all the answers:
.http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...15&pagenumber=1
there are many, many pages on this one, hopefully you can locate you solution there
Unfortunately, most of these solutions relate to Bitpim or Gagin's communication with the phone. My problem is actually one step removed. I can't get my PC to recognize my phone as a modem device. Thanks for the help, though, targagirl.
All your answers can be found at http://smithplanet.com/8600
By the way, don't use the download-img.txt method for images. If you do, the images will disappear when you reset the phone. Use the store.idx method instead.
Also, this does NOT work with the 8900. I get at least 3 e-mails a day asking this.
When you say reset I assume you don't mean turning it off and back on again. I did this and my images happily were not nuked.
I also have the DIC-8300 cable and have had success with both Gagin and BitPim which is great.
I have not been able to get it to work with Susteen's DataPilot which I spent $40 on last week and downloaded. When I inquired with Susteen they informed me that:
===================================
Unfortunately 8600 phone can be only supported by following package: http://www.susteen.com/shop1_audiovox8600.htm
Following is our explanation of "3rd party cable" use:
We do not support "3rd party cable" which is from manufactures other than Susteen.
USB cable and its driver work together and one will not work without the other. When you use 3rd party cable, first thing you must do is to install the driver for the cable correctly. This is where the first problem rises as far as our technical support goes. Since we do not have and do not use the cable, we simply do not have any information how the cable should be installed and should appear in device manager. In case of any problem, there is no way for us to troubleshoot it. You will need help from the cable supplier on this issue. Once the driver is installed, our DataPilot MAY work with the cable but then again, in case of problems, Our diagnostic tools will render useless when it comes to different cable. Different cables behave differently and used differently. Please understand that we simply do not have luxury of researching the other supplier's product to have it work with our software.
For above reason, when you are using 3rd party cable, we are not able to offer support. Our software is specifically tested with our own cable and packaged for that purpose and 100% guaranteed to work with DataPilot.
===================================
I question why they sell it separately. I'm also skeptical that ordering their cable will help. Anyone testify success with the DataPilot Package and an 8600?
