S55 goes into power cycle mode

My S55 has suddenly started going into a power cycle mode. It continually keeps powering off and on in a tight loop rendering the phone unusable. The only way to shut this off is to remove the battery.
Has anyone else seen this behavior? Is it a hardware problem? Is there anything I can do short of sending it to Siemens for repair?
