Can somebody help me out here? I've got a serial cable for my S56 and I want to be able to send faxes through it from my computer. Is this even possible? If so, does anyone know the init strings to make the phone behave like a modem, etc? Basically wanting to do this since I don't have a landline.

Have Customer Service add "Wireless Internet" (Circuit Swiched Data) and you'd be good to go.

I've already got CSD on my account, what I need to know is how to actually get the computer to use the phone like a modem. For example, do I just tell the computer to add new hardware and pick generic modem? Will the phone respond to generic init strings sent to it or are there special settings that the S56 uses?

What you need to activate is data capability on your account which is free of charge. Check your market and you can get separate number for receiving/sending faxes free of charge.

Hi akjohnson,

Have you succeeded with your faxing capability from PC using Seiemens s56 yet? I was trying to do the same thing plus dial up ISP from my laptop trhough s56 but never succeeded in doing so. If you have don that, pleaes share your tips....

Yep sure have! Turns out all you have to do is tell Windows to install a generic modem driver on whatever com port you have the phone connected to. I just had it install a generic 14400 modem driver since I knew that the max speed would be 9600 anyway. Then you just dial your isp or send a fax the way you normally would, telling it to use the modem you just "installed."

Would you mind please tell me which type of cable do you use between s56 and PC? Is it serial or USB? Also, which service provider you have. Mine is Cingular with CSD WAP service enabled.

It's a serial cable that I got off of ebay. It's not the kind that can provide power so it won't work to unlock the phone unfortunately, but it works fine for accessing the address book and using the phone as a dial-up modem. It actually came in handy just the other day when my cable modem temporarily crapped out and I needed to check my email in a hurry. My provider is also Cingular and I've got csd wap enabled.

Hi akjohnson,

I connected my s56 through Siemens' USB cable. I am able to run IE and surf the net from my PC through s56 using Cingular's CSD WAP wireless intenet service without a problem. However, when I tried to send fax from WinFax Pro from the PC, I received an error msg from the s56 display saying "Not applied for". I called up Cingular tech support and they told me that Cingular no longer provide wireless fax service. I though in your earlier posting you were able to send/receive fax using s56 through Cingular without a problem. Could you confirm it please?

Thanks,

- Dhsieh
