Basic Bitpim and Wallpaper Q's

I haven't seen any primers on how to upload wallpaper and ringtones using a cable and Bitpim.
Anyhelp greatly appreciated!
Here's what I have:
- LG VX 4500
- VVW Data Cable
- .7-test8 bitpim
Here's what works:
- I can modify my phonebook using the VZW cable and supplied software. It works great!
- I can get Bitpim to recognize the phone and download phonebook entries. It doesn't download wallpaper or ringtones.
Questions:
1. How do you prepare a digital picture in jpg or bmp for the phone? How do you make it smaller? How small should it be? What file type should it be?
2. What's the best way to get into the phone?
3. Similar questions re; ringtones.
Thanks,
Howie S (VZW,LG newbie)

There are definitely a few primers around. Use the search function (orange button at the top of the HoFo pages) and search for "vx4500 wallpaper primer", "vx4500 wallpaper newbie guide", or "vx4500 how to download ringers" or variations of these.
Here's one of the threads I found by searching as above:
how to download vx4500 ringers and wallpapers
There are several others that looked helpful, too.
About your questions:
1. Pics: to use as a background, I think the best dimensions are 120x131 (could be wrong about this, though). On my phone, I have fewer problems with white bars around the pic if I use .bmp files; .jpg can be tried, but these have been more problematic so far. You can resize or crop pics with any of several different photo editing programs, from MS Paint to ArcSoft Photo Studio, to Adobe PhotoShop. Just depends on exactly what you're trying to do to the pic, what software you have available, and what you're comfortable using.
2. "Get into the phone"....not exactly sure what you mean by this. If you're just trying to transfer the wallpaper and ringtone files from your computer into the phone, then I'd recommend the BitPim software that you're using. A brief tutorial is included there. You can display the phone's file system by clicking on the top-level "+" sign. Files are transferred by using the "Data" tab to send or receive data. Just make sure you back up your phone before starting, and also you should know the difference between the "add" and "replace" options.
If you're trying to hack your phone (like change the LED from red to blue), someone else will have to help you. I haven't tried anything like that on a phone.
3. Ringtones: Again, I'd recommend BitPim to transfer the files (see the tutorial). The general process is very similar to that for wallpapers. You can use several different programs to make the ringtones, depending on how you need to manipulate the file: dB PowerAMP Music Converter, Solo Explorer, WavePad, and Audacity are just a few of the good ones.
I think Bitpim requires a .mid file extension to transfer the ringtone to the phone. The original sound files can be .mp3, .wav, .mid, or whatever other format you have the software to convert to .mid (see above). The only real requirement is that they have to be sampled (encoded) correctly. For my phone, this means mono, 32 kbps, 22050 Hz sampling rate. You'll have to find the right specs for your particular phone.
Hope this helps. It's a little general, but if you could provide more details about exactly what you're trying to do (what software and file formats you're using) people will be able to walk you through it. One other tip about searching: if you have a question about using PhotoShop, for example, don't limit your search by including "VX4500". You can learn a lot by reading about other phones, too.
