Transferring using data cable??

Hi,
I have a Panasonic GU87 phone.I recently bought a USB data cable for my phone.Could anyone mail me or tell me how to use that data cable.I downloaded edit tool software and installed the drivers for my USB cable.Whenever I tried to connect, it gives me an error "Connection timeout".Please help.Let me know step by step what to do in order to transfer files and ringtones from PC to phone and vice-versa.
