SL56's LCD

i have a SL56 which i recently got. have one question. is the LCD not backlite on the phone? the screen when powered on is very faint, and if looked at in the dark, barely see it.
any ideas? is it replacable/fixable?

how? right now, it does not have a SIM's card so my options are limited. is it something i can only do once i have a service?

Option only comes up when you have a SIM card in there. Otherwise, you only get the limited menu with no option to change any setting on the phone, except for the clock.
