Just a compilation of everything I can think of right now. I will add more as we find out more. I will update site as more info rolls in on this phone.

Have funhttp://www.earthuser.com/8900/

Nice job =) Keep it updated - I'll be checking back

Posted by: msmad58

What a great summarization. Thank you!

Posted by: 8900user

Just a side note -- if you use you own phone number instead of *86 to access your Voice Mail you will be making a Mobile to Mobile (In-Network), and therefore "Free", call instead of the *86 call that uses your minutes. I tried this with RandyD123's suggestion on his site and it works to perfection. Keep up the great work everyone!

Nice Site - Keep up the great work.

I agree with your review of the 8900 - I too have one. Thinking of biting the bullet and just buying a different phone - the speakerphone is virtually useless and that is one of my greatest needs in a cell phone.

i notice you say you haven't been able to connect to the internet w/o verizon. i tried using the freewap protocol. have you tried the
##BROWSER (end key)
UP Proxy IP

UP Link1

AP1-IP 207.232.99.109
AP1-Port 9200
AP2-IP 207.232.99.109
AP2-Port 9201

to put in periods hit the send key.

i then had to restart my phone.
then hit the web browser key. the browser will say connecting and mine did nothing but gave me a no screen. if you scroll to the top right hand corner of the screen it gives you options. i set my homepage and one of my bookmarks as http://www.google.com/wml
i was then able to browse and search through google.
i still have no data minutes logged on my phone and am happy w/ the results.

Taken from last statement:

Quote:

In order to standardize charges for Voice Mail retrieval across the country, beginning with your April 2004 billing statement, accessing your
Voice Mailbox from your wireless phone by dialing *86 SEND or by dialing your wireless phone number will be deducted from your general
airtime allowance minutes or your night/weekend allowance minutes depending upon the time that your call is placed. Mobile-to-Mobile
minutes
do not apply to Voice Mail retrievals. Voice Mail access exceeding your airtime allowance minutes will be billed at the airtime rates
specified in your wireless service agreement. Depending upon your price plan, toll and/or long distance may also be charged when you
access your Voice Mailbox. Accessing your Voice Mailbox from a landline phone will not incur airtime charges.

I stand corrected. I should have known they would find a way to keep us from saving even a few pennies!

yes this will cost you air time, but not "data time." so it's free for nights and weekends.

How do you enable for your phone to use the internet...

Also what dose it mean Security error: key not recognized?

Posted by: Quarter

Thanks RandyD123 for collecting the info and hosting your page

My evil Verizon banners are all gone!!!

Posted by: jfravel

the security error, i have no idea. are you hitting the green phone key when trying to put in periods (.) ? and to activate internet on your phone, i have verizon and i did not have to call to tech or customer service. so i'm assuming you can just put in your proxy and port and it should work. on the other hand, i have tried this w/ other 8900's for other carriers (US Cellular) and i was unsuccessful. long story short if you have verizon it should work.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong here. I tried the above and I get:

"Internal server error (500), servlet not found: /www.openwave.com"

Any help?

Posted by: jfravel

ya you won't be able to get onto there. but navigate to that top menu on the upper left side. then change the homepage to to the google one and you should be able to navigate. make sure you type it all out. so include http://www.

Posted by: Zephan

Got it. Thanks. Can you suggest any good mobile sites?

This may be dumb question, but do you have to subscribe to wireless web from Verizon (that's who I have) to use this trick?

Posted by: Jay5gen

when i try this on my phone... it just keeps saying "sending...."

eventually it sends me back to the main screen...
im in a digital area, only a 2 bar signal though, could that be the problem or am I missing something.
i've double checked the ##browser settings to make sure they match whats posted here. Thats all i've changed.

Posted by: Zembobo

It is likely that the server you are using was down at the time. Try again later and if that doesn't work, try the one I use. It's:

69.244.186.6:9201

and it's hosted by the gracious Manleyf. See this thread:

I think your problem is that you have not changed the homepage on the phone from what you describe.

When you get the sending sending, etc. Press and HOLD down the ZERO key. It should 'error' out the web broweser. Then go to the openwave icon and navigate to the homepage edit area and enter a diff homepage than www.openwave.com. That gateway usually doesnt work with 3rd party waps - free or otherwise.

Good Luck.

S2k

PS: to the other poster - you do not need to subscribe to VZW to get 3rd party or free WAP access.

I know that we are going to need to e-mail verizon and audiovox but what are we requesting ... If you put in the list of fixes that we are demanding then they will see that we are saying the same thing over and over and thus know and hear what the public is speaking..
