Have a small wallpaper question

I have a small question/problem with creating my wallpaper. I followed the instructions posted by Wavesponge (somewhere in this forum). My question is, do I have to covert my pics to 120x160 pixels? When I do, the picture becomes horrible and doesn't display correctly on the phone (white bars on the sides and very pixelated - maybe I mixed up the width and height). Anyway, when I don't convert it to 120x160, the picture is huge - still 3 Mbs. I know I'm doing something wrong, but when I see pics people have created for their phones, they are nowhere as pixelated as mine.
Also, I when I save the pic as a bmp file, it shows up as a .psd file where I saved it. If I highlight that pic, it says it's a bmp, but still has the .psd extension. The pic still diplays on the phone, but I don't know if this could be part of the problem. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

your wallpaper should be 120x131 not 120x160.
the way I make my wallpaper is :
I create a new image in photoshop thats 120x131.
then I find a pic I want as a wallpaper.
I open that pic up with photoshop
Make sure its RGB color (Image>mode>rgb color)
I crop/resize the Image till its around 120x131
Then I copy the pic into the blank 120X131 image I made
I save the 120x131 as a bitmap (file>save as>format>BMP)
Name the file whatever
I select 16bit in the next bitmap menu
Then I send it to my phone
All the wallpaper I make with that method turns out clear and is always 30.7kb.
