Very slow animations and scrolling

I just sent myself a text message from my email address so I can hear the reminder beeps. However, on the outside LCD, it scrolls about a third of the way through the message before it REALLY slows down. I've noticed it's VERY slow to do the animations on the main LCD as well.
Is there any reason this thing doesn't work as quickly as it should?
