Getting PST To work in Windows XP with a USB Data Cable.

What you need:
1.) Compatible Motorola Phone
2.) USB Data cable or USB Data/Charging Cable
3.) Compatible Version of PST

Installing PST:
1.)The first thing you need to do is find the PST install folder and right click it. Select properties from the context menu and go to the compatibility tab.

Check “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” and select “Windows 2000” from the drop box. And click on “Ok”.

2.) Install PST by running the File.
3.) Run PST. It will find some new devices and ask for Driver locations.
Point Windows to the PST folder. At this point it should install a few devices. When all the devices are done installing you can open up your Device Manager to see that we are where we need to be.

If you see this Yellow Exclamation Point on a USB Composite Device, all is going well so far.

4.) Open Up Regedit by selecting run from the start menu and typing “Regedit.exe”. Its always a good idea to make a backup of your registry before making any modifications. To do this go to File, select Export create a name like “registryBackup” and make sure that for Export Range at the bottom, All is selected. Then hit Save and you are ready to make your changes.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\U SB

Right click on the USB folder and select permissions.
Make sure “Everyone” has “Full Control” selected.

Now begins the fun, you have to locate your Motorola Phone Device from one of the many devices under your USB folder.

Other than by going through each branch individually there are a few other ways you can find the correct “Folder”.
My Way:
Search for the string “usbccgp”
The results for this search will be all the devices that are classified as a “USB Composite Device.”
You will know you have found the right device when you see your phones name for the “LocationInformation” string value.

Double Click on the “Service” Key and change the Value from usbccgp to usbhub.

Inside this “Folder” we are working in should be another folder called “Control”. Locate and expand that folder.

Inside the control folder should be a string value called ActiveService modify the value to read usbhub.

Don’t worry if the key isn’t there, just go ahead and add it. On the righ side of Control pane, right click, select New¸String Value. Type in ActiveService for the name and double click it to set usbhub for its value. It should then resemble the picture above.

5.) At this point we unplug the phone and wait for about 5-10 seconds and plug it back in. If PST is not already running, then run it as well. Windows should now find new devices and again ask for driver locations. Again point them to the PST folder. You may have to do this step two or three times. After all the devices are detected and installed, they should appear as follows in the Device Manager.

If there are still exclamation points, remove the devices from the device manager. Close down PST, unplug the phone and reboot.
From that point, plug in the phone, run PST and go through the detection again. This should solve your problem!

Hope this helps.

You have to write click on the icon, then click the property tab and change it, and only if you have XP. If your not an XP user, ignore that part.
