100% to 0% Standby Battery Time in 6 Hours???

Hey guys,

Did I do something wrong? I've had bluetooth and GPRS on before and haven't got this poor of battery life. How can I make this better? I bought this phone thinking it may have similar battery life as my T68i but it's proving to be extremely lower than my trusty T68i. How can SE say that it has so many standby hours when I can't even get 48 out of it normally, but now 6 hours? I didn't even use the PDA function much, I'm guessing a whole 15 minutes. Somethings got to be wrong with this phone now as it's sucking battery power like a V12 Engine drinks fuel. Any advice on similar experiences? Thanks!

if it's a brand new phone
it's normal
u just hv to use it
the standby time will increase

Today is better, only at 55% in 5 hours. This still sucks...I've had the phone for a few weeks now. Does bluetooth drain that much battery life? I don't even have visible checked off! All I want is 36 hours of standby life, but I have a feeling that won't even be close. Thanks!

BLuetooth drains a lot of battery....

Hmmm that wasn't the case on my T68i. I always left it on. I guess I'm not comparing apples to apples though. I'm comparing apples to pineapples! The bigger it is, the more it needs to run! Thanks guys.

With my P800, I find that BT doesn't drain the battery as much as I thought it would. But now that I started getting into MMS, leaving GPRS on made a considearable dent in battery life.

Check out C20LET's tip on GPRS and battery conservation here: http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...threadid=352152

It works for me, but I'd suggest you test it out first to make sure it helps you without compromising functionality.

bluetooth doesnt really drain battery
anything that requires a lot of use from the screen and GPRS do

so opera is a battery murderer

That tip was done immediately when I got the P900. I think that one day where I had only 6 hours of standby time soemthing was wrong because when I turned the phone off and turned it back on, I am getting "near" 24 hours of standby time once again. Not great still, I'm starting to feel like I have to be tied to a cord with this kind of battery life....

Rovert,

Bluetooth has nothing to do with it, that's for sure. I suspect your P900 stays on GPRS for longer than it should. I have mine set to disengage after 5 minutes of idle time. When you're on GPRS, with the planet Earth icon showing, battery consumption is just like when talking on the phone. Some think it even consumes more!

I take my P900 off the cord early every morning, around 6:30, use it all day and evening, do A LOT of Opera browsing and do some "regular" browsing on my PowerBook through Bluetooth. I also constantly change calendar and contacts entries, do a little BT beaming, you know, stuff the P900 was meant to do.

At the end of the day, it typically has 30-40% battery life left; and that's around midnight.

I'm getting about the same with same usage patterns.

how did you guys charge your battery?? I could use P900 like this and use it about 3-4 days and iam using P900 as a mp3 player as well.... I charge my phone 1-2 times a week....

Rovert,

Did you check how long GPRS stays connected after you're done with it? Honestly, I can't thing of anything else that might be responsible for so much drain.

SupraTT,

Using the P900 for playing music is not much of a battery killer as is being on a GPRS session. It is, after all, playing music from a solid state RAM storage, with no moving parts.

In the good old T68i days, before I used it as a GPRS modem, I could go on for days. Same with the P900. I've used it for calling only for a few days and still had a lot of battery life on it. It all depends on each individual's usage patterns.

Again, Bluetooth is not the battery killer we all thought it would be. Opera, GPRS in general, sucks batteries like nothing else.

I just want to thank the original poster. The change made a world of difference in my phone battery. With the GPRS turned off unless I need it, I am on the end of the second day and still have 72% of the battery left. I am still using my phone the same way, BT to synchronize twice a day, a total of 30-45 minutes of phone calls, 50+ SMS, a couple of MMS and a total of 5-10 minutes of email/internet/GPRS access. Usually by now my phone would be down to 20% at the most. Amazing what little change can do to your battery.

Somebody need to sticky the post as a must tip to use to increase the life of the battery.

Thanks again.

Hey, cool. C20LET deserves the credit...I'm just glad to have passed it along.

Thanks a million fidog Just trying to help some folks out. Glad most of you have found my idea helpful.

@ Rovert: Are you using Sman or HandyDay to close apps once you've stopped using them? If you aren't, every app you open will stay open until the P900 is restarted. I find that this tends to do me in if I forget. Sman works well to flush out apps that shouldn't stay open, but if I ever use the Communicam with the flip closed and then exit, it'll stay on in the background and suck the life out of my battery.

Your post regarding how you had 24 hours again after restarting leads me to believe this could be your problem...

Get Sman from www.my-symbian.com. If you need help with it just ask here but the readme file is pretty good.

Hope this helps out!

Thanks! Yes I figure it was the communican doing the battery sucking work. Everything is back to normal after I make sure that I have that program closed. Now I'm back to 24 hours of use easily! I think Fido in Coquitlam is probably one of the worst places for GSM battery life. I only get 2 bars from Fido when I'm at home. But compared to staying in America, America's network is so much stronger and my battery life in all my GSM phones last just about twice as long compared to being in Vancouver, BC. Thanks again!
