Can't connect V300 to PC! Help!

Hi again.
I've been trying to get my V300 and my laptop talking to one-another. I have loads ofo java and stuff I want to upload, and loadds of pictures I want to retrieve from the phone.
Someone here pointed me to http://snow.prohosting.com/gman1025/v400/beginners.htm to get the necessary software installed. I read through them, downloaded everything from that spanish site and set aside a few hours last night.
It fell over at the first hurdle: Plugging the phone into the USB port did not bring up the "new hardware detected" wizard. It did acknowledge the presence of the phone with a little sound effect, but no wizard.
I went ahead anyway, kicking off the installation manually from the control panel, but it hasn't installed satisfactorily. PST and the like can't find the phone.
I've tried this on two PCs, same result.
Has anyone else encountered this? Can anyone help?
I have to say I'm very disappointed with Motorola for this. Every other phone I've had has come with its own data cable and easy-to-install software. With this phone you have to download half a dozen cryptic programs off the web and then follow a very precise and complex set of instructions... only for it not to work! Why couldn't they just do what every other manufacturer seems to do and include a cable and CD with the phone?
Sorry for the rant, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am having the same problem, the PC does not detect the phone when it is plugged ito the PC via the USB cable. If I switch off the phone and back on again with it connected I briefly get a 'USB Device Not Recognised' balloon pop up by the clock, but it disappears again quickly? If I check in device manager it's not there? I am using a generic cable bought of eBay. I think the problem may be with the data cable, should have bought a Geniune Motorola.
dogscoff are you using a Motorola cable?
I would be interested in hearing if anyone has any idea if the problem could be with the data cable.

bobster, i have the exact same problem as you. ebay bought cable too. i dont know whats up

>dogscoff are you using a Motorola cable?
Nope, ebay bought. It's NOT one of the ones with a big bullky thing in the middle (I've read warnings against them.)
Here's the auction: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....MEBWN%3AIT&rd=1
I notice the seller has stopped selling these cables. Still has no negative feedback. I'm guessing the cable is OK, but not with this software. Maybe it needs the official software I've seen for sale in the shops.
I think my next step will be to invest in an official cable+software pack from a high-street phone shop. Pricey, but at least if it still doesn't work I can get my money back. If it does work I'll be able to establish whther my ebay-bought cable is any good.
Will report my findings...
(BTW, if anyone wants to buy a V300, I have one going spare. Look me up on ebay)

dogscoff, I bought my cable from the same seller...
I recieved the following email when I mailed the seller for advice on the problem:
----------------------------------------------------------
The puter fails to recognise the cable usually because it's set on the wrong com port. Try com port 3.
Here's some instructions that may help:
Switch on your computer and make sure that the USB port is enabled and in proper working condition.
Plug in the USB cable to the USB port and run the "Add New Hardware Wizard" to guide you in setting up the new device. Click "Next" to continue.
Insert the USB Data Cable CD and click next to continue. For Windows 98, click "Search for the best driver for your device and click search driver from the driver.
Windows will detect the driver and show the "New Tech USB-to-Serial Cable". Click "Next" to continue installation.
Click "Next" again and let Windows copy the necessary files to your hard disk.
When Windows has finished installing the software, open the "SYSTEM" from "Control Panel" to check the serial port number assigned by Windows. Then select / add a proper COM (usually com3)for the software that you are using.
If even that fails, go ahead and send us the cable back. We can either refund you or send another cable.
thanks
lewis (for clement)

Have a look at motoclub.com here:

It seems there is a problem with win XP not detecting the cable properly with some motherboards/usb drivers.

Thanks for the info bobster. Guess I'll dig out my old win98 laptop and see if i can connect using that.
What a pain if it's just incompatible with my PC. I wonder if connecting via a USB hub would make a difference..?
Then again I have tried it on two different XP machines with the same result. Seems unlikely they should both suffer from this mobo/usb fault.

Just received an original motorola USB cable purchased from eBay. Cable autodetected and drivers were installed with no problems. I am now up and running using motorola's mobile phone tools. I'm gonna try PST and then MIDway to load games onto the phone.

interesting- now i've sold my spare v300 I'll have the cash to get myself an original cable I'll try that next. I expect to get the same results as you, but we'll see.
What happens if you run the official moto software with the unnofficial cable?
If it doesn't work that leaves the question of what to do with the ebay-bought ones. If they are unsuitable it wouldn't be right to sell it on. In fact we probably ought to be leaving negative feedback on that seller, or at the very least contact him.

Just went out and paid a lot of money for an official CD& cable. GUess what- it works flawlessly. Furthermore, now that I have the CD drivers and all installed, I can get hitngs like PST and MMPT to work as well. Still having trouble with Midway, but I'm sure tthat can be overcome.
I'll have a go with the other cable soon. I think all these instructions everywhere downloading and using PST and MMPT etc all assume that you have already installed the official software. It would have saved me a lot of time, grief and money if someone had just mentioned this...

OK, finally got midway working now with the official cable, and only after installing the official software.
So I tried to use exactly the same procedures and software but with the ebay-bought cable. Guess what..? Didn't work. Wouldn't even recognise the phone. Maybe I happened to get a duff one but it looks to me like this cable is useless. I'll be contacting the seller and asking for a refund.
THanks for the help everyone. Next stop: Flexing the phone so I can get shot of all those pointless sounds and pictures that T-mobile think I need to have. Wish me luck
Posted by: bobster
dogscoff, keep me posted on how you get on flexing your V300. I'd like to be rid of all the T-Mobile branding too.

Bobster: Sure thing.
Actually I got a bit distracted last night playing around with audacity, creating a whole stack of cool ringtones from my mp3 collection. Well worth playing with
I find that ska, two tone and reggae songs almost invariably work well. with Tetris & bubblebobble now installed as well, my little v300 could be running out of mem surprisingly soon=-)
That audacity is a cool little prog though, reminds me of my old amiga days, messing around with octamed and Digtal sound studio.
Those were the days...

Anyway...
In other news, bigbargaintown has agreed to refund me mny money on the cable I bought from ebay. Seems to be a genuine seller, not out to rip anyone off.

Just had a go at flexing my phone. Here's what i did:
-Downloaded the flex file GI9V600000AA0E9.hs from http://motorola.acidjazz.net
-Downloaded the "modified" *cough*cracked*cough* versions of PST from motclub.
-plugged phone into PC
-Ran the protection-free version of MultiFlashFlex.exe (found in your PST installation directory)
-When it found my phone, I selected "enable flex", disabled the "Master clear phones after flexing" option and then browsed for my flex file. Don't know if this is the correct procedure or not, but I couldn't find any instructions.
-Clicked "start".
-Read all the dangerous-looking error messages and waring symbols that came up.
-Saw that my phone's screen had gone blank.
-Pissed my pants.
-Switched phone on: It was unharmed, apparently, but also unflexed.
-Decided not to experiment any further with flexing. Not for a little while anyway.
I'll keep my eye on this thread though, and if I get any new information and/or try again I'll post here.
