Hi everyone...

I am a fresh newbie in the PALM world. Was into PPC a while ago but got a little pissed off with their incessant hanging.

Anyway, I just got myself a new Treo 600. So, in order to orientate myself in the PALM world, can anyone sort of "show me around". I'm ok with the hardware, its the softwares that I need help on.

Are there any good (good meaning FREE) software download sites, any recommended softwares to have (esp. the software needed to view and work on Microsoft Office, that is a MUST!)

Also, I'm having troubles downloading MP3s from my PC into my Treo. A 3+MB song takes about 20-30mins to download. Am I doing it correctly? (I added the song into the Install Tool window and then sync-ed the Treo)

Is there any way to set MP3 music as a ringtone?

Wow I have so many questions to ask, but I'll try and figure out some of them myself. But please help me with the questions above..

Thanks!

second of all you need documentstogo to work on office docs

Try using a SD/MMC reader to send the files

You need lightwave and Pockettunes(which is free from palmone) to set MP3 ringtones

http://www.palmgear.com will be your friend in app research

btw welcome to the palm world

Thanks hofo_mofo..

Can you guide me on how to transfer midi files into my Treo to set as ringtones?

Also I have downloaded Pocket Tunes but can find no way to set my MP3 files as ringtones.

Your advise is deeply appreciated.

To transfer midi files, either e-mail them to your Treo or host them on a site and then point the browser to it. Or just put them on an SD card and then transfer them. Either method will download the midis to the ringtone database.

Pocket Tunes is just an mp3/wav player but it can't make them ringtones by itself. You need the program LightWav. That will, among other things, work with Pocket Tunes to use mp3s and wavs as ringtones.

thanks Flyer!!

I tried doing as you advised to transfer the midis to the Treo but after transferring I can't find the midis!
I looked under the list of default midis already in the Treo but the ones I just d/l-ed were not in the list.

You mind telling me how to?
Sorry if I sound like a duck learning to swim but I'm really new at this.

Posted by: letsgoflyers81

How did you try transferring them?

Posted by: tzar

I added the file(s) into the Install Tool window and then sync-ed the Treo

You mean there's another way?

Posted by: letsgoflyers81

Yes. Syncing won't work. Either put them on an SD card and then put the card in your Treo, or use the e-mail or browsing method.

but I'm having the same problems. Okay I emailed the midi file to my Treo but I don't know how to get the attachemnt. I've tried both hotmail and yahoo email and neither one lets you download the attachment.

You need a POP3 e-mail client that can handle attachments. Handspring's client will do it and so will Snapper Mail.

Posted by: lucy68

Alright, so 'm really new at this. What's the name of the Handspring email software?

Posted by: letsgoflyers81

I believe it's simply called Mail or Email. If you get the Firmware update 1.20, the Handspring client is included. lgreenberg posted the link to it in another thread.

Okay, so I bought a software program named iambic mail and I think I managed to save a midi file on my sd card but I can't be sure. How do I look and see what's on the sd card?

And then the next question will be: How do I get the midi file from the sd card into pTones or Lightwav or whatever?

Stephanie

PS: This site totally rocks! At last I feel like I might be able to get my phone to do what I want it to.

Stephanie

Posted by: letsgoflyers81

You have to save the midi to the Treo's RAM, not the SD card. If you e-mail it to yourself, there should be an option to do so.

Posted by: lucy68

I'm still trying to get this midi saved to my phone. Is there any way to move it from the SD card to the phone's RAM?

Stephanie

Posted by: letsgoflyers81

I'm not sure of how to transfer from an SD card to RAM. I've never tried. I always used e-mail or the browser to download the midis because they go directly to RAM that way.

Posted by: lucy68

Okay, so I think I've gotten the midi into the phone's RAM (I did the download thing). Now what?

Stephanie

Posted by: letsgoflyers81

When you save it to RAM, it should be in the midi database and it should be in the list of ringtones.

Posted by: lucy68

Cool, and now for my final request...

I need the midi for the Nokia tune, Gran Vals, Grande Valse, whatever you want to call it. Can anyone post it for me?

Stephanie

Use a program called FileZ for the Palm. It can be found here
http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?f...are&prodid=9992

You can transfer files from your SD card to the Palm's RAM using this utility without having to email stuff to yourself.

Also, if you are looking for a specific ringtone, why not just use an MP3 ringtone through LightWav instead of going through the hassle of emailing a MIDI ringtone? Just look for the mp3 of the MIDI file you want to use as a ringtone or use one of the many audio converters on your PC to convert from MIDI to MP3. I use AudioConvert from http://www.audioconvert.com. Not sure if it does MIDI to MP3 but, sincei t is a powerful converter, I don't see why it wouldn't have this conversion option.

Then, simply use the Install Tool to transfer your MP3 to the SD card and use LightWav. LightWav will also transfer your MP3's to your Palm's Ram. Just hit the button titled "CONVERT" at the bottom of the screen in LightWav.

Posted by: lucy68

So does anyone have the Nokia tune as an mp3?

(And I'm still working on trying the FileZ thingy.)

Stephanie

Posted by: rossoneri

just looked at audioconvert. doesn't do midis. sorry.

btw, what ringtone are you looking for? what nokia ringtone?

if you use an mp3 instead of a midi, you can just transfer it to your SD card using INSTALL TOOLS. then use lightwav to find the file you just transfered. choose it in lightwav. then hit CONVERT, which will "convert" the mp3 from SD memory to Palm Memory.

I think the word "convert" is misleading. it is basically just copying from sd mem to palm mem.

I am looking for the NOkia Tune, Gran Vals, Grande Valse, you know the really, really annoying ring from Trigger Happy TV.

Stephanie
