Hi. I just got a CDM 8900 the other day, and I love the phone, but like almost everyone else I hate the VW banner. I saw the post on how to remove it and I started looking for a data cable and software to hack my phone a bit. The only problem is that I'm not sure which is the best way to go. I'd like to remove that banner, be able to edit my phone book / ringtones / pictures, and possibly use my phone as a modem for my laptop. Could someone suggest the best cable and software combo to get? I don't care if the software comes with the cable or if I have to download it, just as long as it works. I'd like to get it as cheap as possible, but if I have to spend $40 and get Verizon's kit then thats what I'll do. Thanks. John.

Go to Radioshack and purchase the LGVX6000 cable and download the drivers from www.futuredial.com for the LGVX6000. Go to http://bitpim.sourceforge.net/ and download BitPim. DO NOT TRY TO UPLOAD YOUR PHONEBOOK OR ANYTHING ELSE. YOU WILL KILL YOUR PHONE. Only the Filesystem works on Bitpim for the CDM8900. The cable is only $20.99. That's all you have to spend...

Thanks for the reply. By kill, do you mean irreversibly and you are forced to buy a new phone, or just that it will wipe out the phone's information (phonebook, etc)? Also, I thought that bitpim dropped support for the 8900, or is the dead phone issue the dropped support?

I just checked yahoo, and there are several data cables for the vx 6000 on there. One is straight through and claims it can charge the 6000 for $20 and another has a box on it and it's $15 will they both work? Also, can anyone answer my earlier question about how badly you can damage your phone? Also, do you set bitPim to the 8900 or the VX 6000 when you're using the vx 6k data cable and the 6k drivers from futuredial? And just so I'm clear, which exact buttons in bitpim will lock up the 8900? Thanks again.

Id seriously hold of on the vx6000 cable for a little while.
When you see posts for damaged phones, they mean there is the possiblity to render your phone ENTIRELY USELESS... totally fried, in a word..... DEAD

FutureDial and others seem to have official 8900 cables and sync software coming soon. Its possible that the problems we've been having arnt actually the phone, or even the software... it maybe that we are finally noticing the slight differences between the cables need for a vx6000 and a cdm8900...

Dont risk your new phone quite yet... wait and see if the official cables are more stable. Personally I have the vx6000 (NON-Charging) cable with the little serial to usb inline box.... but its sitting in the bottom of a drawer, it flaked out on me once. and after hearing what can happen im not in a hurry to use it again.

Well, I am a little nervous about it, but the problem is that I dont want this phone if I've got to deal with that stupid verizon banner. I'd rather take it back and get another one. So unless they come out with that pretty soon then it makes it too late to return the phone. If i buy the data cable through verizon, do I still run the risk of killing my phone with bitpim?

Do you suggest that people return their LGVX6000 cables and just use the CDM8900 compatible ones? They have CDM8900 cables and I don't know why people are buying the VX6000 cables anyway. Nevertheless, playing with this phone's filesystem seems to be very dangerous and risky. Maybe amateurs should not bother fooling with the phone's filesystem at all until experts are 100% sure that there will be no damage done to the phone.

I just ordered the mobile office kit from Verizon, so I'll be getting what should be the most compatable cable for the phone. I realize there are still risks, but I was just wondering if someone could tell me the exact options on BitPim that will kill the phone, and which is the best version of BitPim to use with the 8900. Thanks.
