Sync Software for 8600, 8900

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Smith Micro has joined in with sync support for the 8600 and 8900 (as well as a bunch of other Audiovox phones). This means we now have a wide degree of support from all the major sync software players. Here's a summary:

Susteen's DataPilot for 8600
FutureDial's SnapSync (8600+8900)
Smith Micro's Quicklink Mobile Phonebook (8600, 8900)

Has anyone bought and tried these products for the 8600 or 8900? Which is best?

Well this is definetely the most promising post I've seen in a long while. If anyone has the guts and the funds to try one of these out, LET US KNOW. If any of these work like their supposed to, my life will be so much better.

Questions though... did u follow the links on the QuickLink page. Seems they suggest Verizon customers to purchase the software from verizon !?!

Does that mean the Verizon Mobile Office Kit, has Sync software with it, because the website doesnt list it? Does this mean that the Audiovox software wont work for Verizon phones?

You know I love my phone, but im begining to think Verizon is run by Dells tech support... Alot of hype, an instruction manual, and a million bored techs with no clue what their doing...

I am not a particularly big fan of Smith Micro because they only released their software in a standalone version after their two biggest competitors released packages for the CDM 8600. Obviously they were losing sales to customers wanting the software only.

The "order" page on the Smith Micro website states that it is the Quicklink Mobile Phonebook software in the Audiovox MOK8600 which costs $79 and includes a cable. Until now, there was no way to buy just the software; no good for people like me who already bought a cable (for $80 CDN!) without software. Pleas to Smith Micro for software for the CDM-8600 were met with replies such as "We don't support the CDM-8600" and "You may request support for your phone". Perhaps they were under a licensing restriction with Audiovox, but it still left a bad taste in my mouth. I went months without a way to sync my phonebook with my PC.

Because of these reasons and as a matter of principle, I am not interested in supporting the Smith Micro product. However, I have provided the information here for those without such a bias.

The fact that the Quicklink Mobile Phonebook software is not available directly from Smith Micro for Version clients is interesting. I would not be at all suprised if they were not selling their product to Verizon customers because of some licensing restrictions. It's OK - we have other choices now.

It is interesting that all three companies released products with CDM8600 support within two weeks of each other. I wonder if they are all finished or if some of them were rushed out the door.

great news. great post. thanks.

I'll think about it. I'm on a mac. and making VPC work with all this stuff if a real pia.

I have a correction to my initial post - Smith Micro is NOT offering their Quick Link Mobile Phonebook for Windows for direct sale; rather, they are just linking to a page that suggests you buy their software as part of kits (~$70 US including cable) from either Verizon or Audiovox. This is no different than before - you can still do better buying either DataPilot or Future Dial as software (~$30) and buying a cable elsewhere ($20 US or less from several sources).

That's a pretty lame attempt by Smith Micro to appear to offer a competitive offering. Yawn. All the more reason NOT to buy Smith Micro's product (with cable).

Thank goodness we have other alternatives now.

Unfortunately I have not had any success with either alternative.

I paid for (and downloaded) both SnapSync and DataPilot. I also went out and got the cables (first a DICU-8300 cable and then a geniune DICU-8600). I have an Audiovox CDM8600 phone. Neither of these seem to work. Both companies have not answered my support calls. Both of them to state that they don't support either of those cables. So now I have order the cable directly from Susteen. Let us see how that turns out.

Anybody have better luck then me? All I want to do is sync my phonebook. God have mercy on me.

Mz.

WOW, I sent a message out to FutureDial with some questions about the new software, and actually got a reply. Thought it might be info worth posting so Ill just copy it in.

............
We currently have the 8900 on their way, and the website will reflect
when
they are available.

We do not promote 8900 customers using the LGVX6000 cable because both
manufacturers use different software within the phones. Although it may
work
in somecases, using a cable for your phone that it was not manufactured
for
can lead to destroying the phone internally altogether. This is why we
ask
for your patience until we get the tested and approved cable for the
Audiovox 8900.

Thanks,
Devin

Subject: SnapSync Audiovox 8900

With my hopes high, and my day looking brighter I see
that that you list your SnapSync software as
supporting the 8900 now. However you dont list a cable
as being available. Are you aware that your LG_VX6000
cable, number 19 I beleive, will connect to the file
system. That is the cable currently suggested for use
on most forums.

So I guess my question is, what is the difference with
this new cable thats coming (28) and the vx6000 (19)?
Have you tested the 8900 on cable 19, and if so did
the SnapSync software work? Also was it stable? The
maker of the popular BitPim software have dropped
support for the 8900 (using cable 19) claim the
filesystem was to fragile...

Thanks for your time, and please get back to me with
your results. I also welcome you to check out the
forums i was talking about.

theres been some signifigant work done already with
cable 19 and you might find some of it helpfull.

Sorry to hear about the problems mozartHD, that sounds bad. Please let us know if you manage to get either of the packages working. It's hard to imagine it's a cable issue, but I'm no expert.

If anyone else has any other experiences with these new sync packages, please post them here. I for one am waiting to see if these packages will actually work with a CDM-8600 before buying one.

I use the quicklink mobile software that came with the LG 4500 mobile office kit.

The 8900 works with the LG 6000 cable I had previously, but not the 4500 cable. The 8600 cable works with the CDM-135 Cable I had as well.

I havent tried the new Datpilot, my fomerly most favored phonebook program, as they have started to restrict the usage on the latest version.

I hated Future dial's software when I tested it months ago for the same reason, on top of an annoyingly restrictive "activation" the software had to go through.

new email from FutureDial...
the 8900 cable is finished and available

http://shop.futuredial.com/detail.j...&category=10028

its listed as an 8900 (telus) cable... but in response to my third email they claim the cable and SnapSync software are tested and functional for the Verizon 8900.

So whos going to be the first brave soul to lay their phone on the line for the cause....

Hi
The cable for Audiovox 8900 is cable #28 which is different from LG 6000.
It is now available at
http://shop.futuredial.com/items.js...?category=10028
You can check it out.

Hi Susan,

I was wondering are you going to have a SnapDialer support for this phone in the future?

Well I got SnapSync running with my 8600. Turns out I didn't have the updated drivers from the FutureDial web site (no thanks to anyone at FuturDial as my support emails were not responded to). So here is my configuration:

Phone: CDM 8600

Cable: DIC 8600 (came with Bell's Data ToGo kit)

Cable Driver: Prolific USB-to-Serial Bridge (12/1/2003 ver: 2.0.0.24)

SnapSync version: 1.2.2.199 (with driver update from 4/28/2004)

TOTAL COST (so far):
Cable = $120 CDN (Data to go kit)
Software = $90 CDN (included $40 for overnight shipping)
Drivers: Free (http://tech.prolific.com.tw/visitor...sp?fid=27879636)

TIME:
Invested trying to find this solution = 36.3 hours
Syncing 200+ Outlook contacts to my cell's phonebook = 2 mins
Hair loss = 1011 follicles

I still have the DataPilot kit (with their cable) arriving anyday. I will let you know how that turns out. I'll also give a small review on both. I plan to return the worst of the 2.

Cheers, Mz.

Well.. I own FutureDail software so I will be using this software once everything is ironed out and the SnapDailer is supported by them.
