i just got the phone today... and they have a usb cable for the phone, but it seem that i can't connect it to my computer and the phone.. wat should i do?? is there a software that i need to have?? thank..in advance

Posted by: deadTamago

you can download a N820 memory editor from NEC at:
http://203.194.212.132/cms/files/888.htm

there's english on the page so I guess there shouldn't be any problem installing the software.
and for your info there's a language option while installing the software. (english's there!)
I've transferred some ringtones and pictures to my N820 using this program...
the only bug(?) i've noticed is that the program will shut the phone off when reading from the phone,
then I have to turn the phone on again while still connected to my PC to successfully transfer the files...

good luck!

so you guys already got the N820,man that looks like an awesome phone except for no bluetooth, but with 320 x 240 display, i would forget about bluetooth (not that i use them anyway )

i've search the web for the review on this phone but i couldn't find one, probably coz this phone is pretty new, so could you guys give a quick review of this phone? like rf, sound quality, the menu speed, and the speed of the phone in general like when loading games, java aps, sms, or pictures and things like that.
can you also comments on the pros and cons of this phone

Thanks

Mg

Posted by: Blazers4ever

I ordered mine a couple of days ago. I already downloaded the handset manager, so I'm ready to go. And I even registered at the official N820 site for free 64 chord ringtones, 3D java games, and wallpaper. Here's the link:

http://www.necdream.com.cn/N820/index.php

The sites is in Chinese, but you should be able to babelfish-it through registration.

Also, you should be able to find alot of stuff for this phone by browsing the various Chinese mobile phone forums (just be patient because you'll be copy/pasting alot for translation....lol).

There are actually a couple of reviews, but they are all in chinese...

make sure you have installed the all the drivers for the N820...(there are 4 if i remembered correctly)
and when using the memory editor, double check that your phone is "ON" when connectiong timeout error happens.

as for the ringtones... I'm still trying to find some decent 64-chords ones~ right now I'm using some japanese pop ringtones at 40-chords (need some file-type conversion), and they sound nice!

The display is awesome! I'll say it's only second to Sharp's...since Sharp's CG silicon displays are brighter...but other than that, NEC's display delivers just as beautiful and fine pictures as the Sharp's display. The large screen inherit from the JDM models makes browsing the web with a cellphone much more comfortable! I really like the Openwave browser integrated in the N820. It's a very powerful browser.

RF is good, although this phone doesn't have the 850 band but it still manages to pickup signals and hold on to it at some underground places in downtown Toronto. Sound qualities for both sending and receiving are good, just like what we all expect from a cellphone these days!

The response speed in general (i.e. loading game, sms, etc) for a N820 is fast. The only time the N820 might appeared slow to some people is when you're browsing the picture folder in the phone in gallery view...but it's not slow enough to cause any irritation!

The complain I have towards this phone is the lack of bluetooth. I'm a fan of SonyEricsson~ and I got brain washed Using IR and USB to manage the phone is okay...but it's just easier with bluetooth! Also, the UI might be on the complex side for some users...but in my opinion...it's still better than Moto's UI~
As for battery performance...my N820's battery is still on it's first charge...so can't give an informative comment.

btw, the 3D java game is cool! I've read a review somewhere saying this phone's got a second processor dedicated to java apps.

Don't the drivers automatically install when you install the memory editor software? From what I have seen from looking at it, there's no way to manually install the drivers. This was the same thing with the NEC 515 and 525 memory editors.

Posted by: Metal_gear

Wow thanks a lot deadTamago that's what i wanted to hear, and yeah i also found some reviews in chinese but i prefer personal opinion from the user, because it's more unbiased.

looks like this is one kick a*s phone, with great rf, quality sound and speedy phone,i can't resist that! man you just convince me to get the phone, now if only i can find my piggy bank .
oh, can you also post some pic of the phone and may be put it side by side with your z600.
btw, did you try the camera? how is the quality of the pic ? and if you assign a picture id to a contact and when that person call, does the phone takes a while to draw the pic on the outer display (if it's able to) and on the inner display (if you switch off active flip i.e. you would have to press a button to answer)?

Thanks again for the great review

Mg

been a computer geek i am...sometimes the phone manufacturers don't provide idiot proof solutions when it comes to getting a program working correctly with their handsets. (no offense to anybody, just a pure personal comment! )
so, it is important sometimes that the user knows how to get the hardwares to work with each other correctly.

for the N820, you can check to see if all the needed drivers are installed by right clicking on the "my computer" icon, then go to "properties" -> "hardware" -> "device manager". Double check that there are no icons with a question mark been listed anywhere. If there is one, right click on it then choose "update driver". Refer to the folder with NEC drivers when prompt by the wizard. If it says no match driver's found or something like that, then the unknown device is not the phone, it's something else connecting to your PC that hasn't been properly configured yet.

just a little tip to double check, and this applies to all the devices connecting to your PC via a wire! But just as Blazers4ever said, most of the time all the drivers will be installed when the newly connected device is detected by windows' plug-and-play.

For the camera function of the N820, I'll post some pictures taken by the phone once I'm done playing with it! And I'll see if the video recorded by the phone can be posted as well.

Can you post a picture taken with the phone? I'd like to compare it to me GX-20. Of all the VGA camera phones I've tried, the Sharp takes the best pictures. I wanna see if this phone beats it.

Question: can you download video clips (with the N820) larger then 100k? This is one of my gripes with the GX-20.

Another question: does the phone support J2ME MIDP 2.0 (or at least 1.0) as well as DoJa? That was a gripe I had with the 515/525 (they only support DoJa).

Thanks

the file format supported by N820 are midi files (.mid), mfm files (.mfm), and amr files (.amr). Please note that mmf files are not supported. This is official, however, i haven't tried to upload a mmf file to see if it will work or not yet.

To upload ringtones to my phone, i first uncheck all the checks on the tabs by right clicking in the memory editor's main window except for the "sound" tab (I don't want the memory designated to other functions been overwritten by the editor).
Once in the "sound" tab, you have to read from the phone first by clicking the "HHP to PC" icon on top...after the content of the phone has been read, you should be able to see a list of folders that you you have inside your phone's memory appeared on the top right window. Select the folder in the phone that you want to save the files to, then press the ">>" icon. After that, click on the "PC to HHP" icon on the top again to rewrite the content of the phone (upload the files).
your phone might be turned off during the steps, just turn it on again!

Here's some pictures taken by the phone without any editing in their original sizes. Settings for the pictures are: normal mode, fine quality

Max size VGA 640*480

QVGA 320*240

Well...0.3 megapixel CMOS module isn't a competitor to GX2x's 0.35 megapixel CCD module...which is expected. However, the pictures taken at a closer distance showed an improvement in image quality.

QVGA 320*240

QCIF 176*144

In conclusion, N820's not NEC's attempt to challenge Sharp products in the camera phone market. Although the camera quality is just on the average side, I still found the picture quality slightly better than that of the Z600's, which uses a 0.3 megapixel CCD module.

There're a set of rich features to N820's camera. A white night-light besides the camera, 4 environment mode, 4 piture effects, 4 picture sizes, 5 image quality levels, picture frames (also downloadable), 3x digital zoom, 5-level brightness.....all these makes the built-in camera a fun little toy to play besides its 3D java games!

2 video sizes selectable in N820: 90K and 256K
N820 supports MIDP1.0, i'm not sure about doja...

thanks.. i know how to get the picture in now.. thanks deadtamago... anyway.. i just have one more question??.. that it ok.. so where do you go find all the ringtone for it.. is there a page of this forum that have that kind of ring tone.. ?
thanks

I just got the phone today. Feature-wise, it's very similar to the GX20/22 but the camera isn't as good. I downloaded some wallpaper using the memory editor software with no problems. But the same can't be said for ringtones. I am very disappointed this phone doesn't support SMAF. There is no way now that I can convert my MP3's for use with the phone (I have no idea how to convert them to MFM). The MIDI ringtones I downloaded sound very quiet, and pretty much useless.

@Bence

No there's no email client, but the european version (N400i) will have one, and hopefully it will have a Yamaha sound chip. This version should be out shortly.

The menus/icons look much better on the NEC then the Voda-gimped GX20. Reception has been great. No fluctuating signal meter like the 515/525.

The 3D java golf game is pretty cool, but unless I can find a way to access the necdream WAP site (it won't let me through), I'll never be able to download anymore.

The external screen isn't very good compared to the Sharp. In fact the external screen on the 525 looks better. The colors are washed out for some reason. I tried adjusting the contrast, and that did nothing. I was using JPEG's, so I'll try using a GIF next and see if that works better.

The video recording feature is much longer then the Sharp. I haven't tried downloading video clips to the handset yet, so I don't know the maximum length.

I gotta go to work, so I'll post some more about it later.
Basically it has all the features of the 525 except for an email client. No standard ringtones just like our N.A. counterparts.

Hi Blazers

Thanks for the review. I am not very attracted to the phone after all. I just feel so fed up with the Sharp and that it has no email client. I guess this NEC wont solve that problem. I will stick around until the EU version comes out.

Thanks a lot again,

Bence

Posted by: Blazers4ever

Okay I'm starting to like the phone more and more. I was finally able to download all the 3D java games (plus a bunch of regular ones), and I must say I'm inpressed.

I still need to test the video downloads.

Posted by: ugliduckey

hey Blazers4ever

Yes you can transfer ringtones/wallpaper to the phone from your laptop (and vice-versa) via IR and the Memory Editor software.

@ugliduckey

Go to the NEC Dream bookmark that's pre-installed in your bookmarks. The site is in chinese, but with a little navigating and patience, you'll find all you need including java games, 3D java games, ringtones, wallpaper, start-up animations, and camera frame templates.

You will have to change the settings manually. I can't help you there, since I'm using ATTWS. You could try searching for settings in the T-Mobile forum.

Here's a GIF is made using the N820's Burst mode:

You can actually make animated Gif's from Video captures insite the phone??? That is pretty amazing Blazers.

LOL........no not quite.

I had to animate it with adGIF software. I registered the software, but lost the serial number when I had to clear my hard drive when I received a nasty virus. I don't have the email that had the serial either.......

That's the reason it has that annoying "unregistered" text at the top.....

Anyone know how to create animated GIFs using Adobe Image Ready? I'm having a hard time figuring it out.

Posted by: Bence8810

That must be frustrating. Perhaps you should contact them...

Anyways. SO how did you make the pictures so quickly one after another? That is what the "Burst" mode does? How fast were those cars going? I am just trying to feel the speed the shots were taken after one another.

Thanks for the info.

Bence

P.s. To your edited part:

I know how to. The best way I found out is to store a lot of images under a directory / folder, then choose from the "file" menu, --> Import --> Folder as frames.

And with the adobe imageready, you can optimize the gif, and it will shrink the size really well.

Posted by: Blazers4ever

Thanks Bence, I'll give it a try.

Basically "Burst" mode is a multi-shot function just like out GX-20 has. Then you can set the speed of the animation, etc.

Does anybody know of a mirror, or can anybody make a mirror, of the Memory Editor software? The NEC site is not really working -
I can get to http://www.nec.com.hk/cms/files/863.htm and the google cache's version of http://203.194.212.132/cms/files/888.htm

However, when I try to actually get the zip (http://203.194.212.132/cms/files/n820_me.zip), error! So if anybody knows of an alternate place to dl, or if you can mail to "casey at bithead dot com" i would really appreciate it!

Thanks
-Casey
